I’ve been doing Family History for many years and have found a family I never knew existed. My father really did have Cousins, Aunts and Uncles and I found another family who never knew we existed through DNA. Grandpa had families on both sides of the continent.

I dont understand why everything in this site is behind a pay wall. And a very expensive one at that. Absolutely everything. Its so disappointing and now wants to connect to your Google or Apple account for extra security. Like who on earth wants to steal a family tree they have to pay a gazillion dollars to access any part of at any time. You fet a dna test and have blood relations guess what. You cant access unless you pay. One thing you want to look up and explore. You pay. There are other sites so much cheaper. And they dont own the information they just won't ket you access it unless you pay. And you pay every month not even a one of payment.

Not a great experience. Paid what i consider to be an expensive subscription and then was not able to view records that were sent to me as Hints without being asked to pay more. No thank you!

A great hobby to have, that delivers surprising events, that are easy to share with all family members, even the details that probably would have been hidden from view, all those years ago.

Ancestry is intuitive and easy to use. It has enormous amounts of genealogical data and a large number of customers who share their genealogy. This means that your DNA matches will connect to even distant relatives.

When I joined Ancestry in the late 1990’s, I was desperate to determine the real identity of my maternal great-grandfather Henry Sawyer, who died in Victoria in 1879. My mother had told me he had been an English sailor. Henry’s Victorian marriage record showed him as being born in Suffolk, England in 1837 to Henry Sawer and Sarah Easey. However, there was no record of this Suffolk family. Ancestry did show a Henry Sawyer of his age entering Victoria from New Zealand, and I surmised he could have been there looking for gold.
Widening my Ancestry search beyond Suffolk, I found a Henry Sawyer born in Hampshire England in1835 with parents Henry and Sarah. Sarah’s maiden name was Macey, which sounded like ‘Easey’ and her son had also been an English sailor who had visited New Zealand. For some years, I was convinced that the Hampshire Henry was my great-grandfather. However, in 2017, I was embarrassed to discover that this Henry had been killed in action during an English Navy military action in West Africa. I was forced to continue my search.
Recently I found a distant maternal Ancestry DNA match with a descendant of the Thurkettle family showing a lineage from Sarah Easey who had lived in Dunwich, Suffolk when Henry was born. (Henry Sawyer stated on his marriage certificate that Sarah Easey had been his mother and that he had been born in Dunwich). However, this Sarah had been married to a Joseph Dix. Back in the early 2000’s I’d probably looked at this match and discarded it because the husband was not a Sawyer. Now, because of the Ancestry DNA connection, I examined this family more closely.
I saw that Sarah and Joseph had a son Alfred born 2 April 1839, which approximated the birth date and location given by Henry Sawyer in his marriage certificate. Unfortunately, the Thurkettle family site I saw on Ancestry.com did not show that Alfred had an older brother Joseph, who had been born nearly 12 years earlier in December 1827.
In an online discussion with another descendant of the Dix family, the site manager queried my hypothesis that Alfred might have been Henry Sawyer because Victorian hospital and asylum records of his age, around 51 when he died in 1880, did not tally with the known age of Alfred Dix at that time, of about 41. It is significant that both of the Dix brothers were apprentice merchant navy seamen. Neither of them had recorded deaths and either of them could have been Henry Sawyer in Australia.
The fact that Henry Sawyer was using the second real given name of Joseph Henry Dix (b.1827), taken together with his age matching the 1880’s Victorian hospital and asylum records, and the fact that I have several DNA matches with the Dix family strongly suggests that Joseph Dix was Henry Sawyer, rather than Alfred. In my view, while it is still possible that Alfred Dix was Henry Sawyer, the age difference alone strongly favours Joseph Dix being Henry. We may never know what happened to Alfred.
A further connection to the Dix family came from looking at the names of Joseph’s siblings. I was intrigued to discover that their names were reflected in the names Henry Sawyer gave to his children in Australia. Henry's first son Oscar was named after Joseph’s brother, as was his second child Alfred. My grandmother Louisa Priscilla was exactly named after one of Joseph’s sisters, as was his daughter Emily.
Lastly, it is possible that Joseph Dix knew the Hampshire Henry Sawyer when they were both sailors in the English Navy and adopted his identity when he deserted.
Without Ancestry DNA, I might never have made this important connection.

I have over many years, in the Hints, found many records to confirm my family groups.
But most recently, sadly, I have found some of the hints are so far out in details, names and year ranges etc, they are just wasting my time looking at them.

I regularly look at Ancestry Hints and therefore cannot simply refer to one specific experience. Often they lead me to further research a name or an occasion. Whilst I certainly use a few other Family Tree sites, I probably use Ancestry for 90% of my work. The staff at Ancestry are always very obliging and keen to assist

Ancestry usually provides all the details I need to link my family together. Sometimes research takes a long time but often others have already found the family I am searching for. The hints and family trees that others have already found makes researching very enjoyable. They are not always 100% correct but as more records become available constantly accuracy can be updated.
