Extreme Operational Risk for Agencies: Buggy Billing UI Leads to Client Data Loss

If you are an agency managing server-side tracking for clients, be aware that Stape’s billing architecture poses a massive operational risk to your business.

We recently attempted to migrate our setups from individual self-billing to a consolidated agency billing account. Stape’s backend system handles this incredibly poorly: a new subscription is created immediately, but the previous one is not automatically prorated or refunded. You are essentially double-charged unless you manually chase support for a refund.

Worse still, this transition triggered severe UI glitches in our dashboard. Upgrade buttons became entirely greyed out, and the interface froze for days with messages like "Container upgrade will be done in around 15 minutes." still there days later.

The real danger is the complete disconnect between Stape's customer support and their automated systems. While we were actively locked out of making payments due to their own platform bugs, and while we were actively pleading with support to help us pay, Stape’s automated system blindly went ahead and disabled our clients' tracking containers for "non-payment."

This directly resulted in a loss of live tracking data for our client accounts. Support took weeks to resolve their own interface bugs only for them to reoccur the next month.

We cannot continue to trust our clients' infrastructure to a platform where a basic billing change can completely brick your tracking due to uncoordinated automation and slow support resolution. If you manage high-value client data, look elsewhere.

This incident was escalated to our product team, and they are currently exploring the possibility of building more functionality available to support agents for urgent cases like this, additional conditioning and security checks for an automated refund process during the transition to consolidated invoice billing.
We’ve reviewed everything internally and see that support escalated the issues to all concerned departments, including developers and the finance department, who started an investigation into the problem in a timely manner.
We always strive to build systems that work as autonomously as possible, for speed, reliability, and reduction of human factor risks.
We understand that this issue has been a frustrating experience for you as a customer. Nevertheless, it helped us to identify a bug that hopefully no one will encounter again. Our Lead Manager has already reached out to you separately regarding this issue.

Great solution

Before Stape, we maintained our own template library across multiple solutions. Every new implementation meant finding the right template, updating it, adjusting it. It took time we did not have.

With the Stape, that process is much easier. What makes it truly valuable is that it does not stand alone. The pre-built tags are intuitive, sGTM is easy to manage, and the templates we used to spend real effort maintaining are now just one click away.

We go from brief to implementation faster than we thought was realistic before. Less overhead, fewer problems, more time on actual work. It's one of those things where you don't realize how much friction you had until it's gone.

The Stape feature that saved me the…

The Stape feature that saved me the most headaches is Logs in Server GTM.

It made debugging much easier because I could see exactly which GA4 and Google Ads requests were received, what parameters were passed, and where conversion tracking issues were happening. This saved a lot of time compared to guessing from browser-side GTM preview only.

Tracking Checker is amazing

Stape’s Website Tracking Checker has completely transformed my client onboarding and optimization workflow! It makes it incredibly easy to scan a prospect’s site, instantly spot gaps, and present those potential improvements as a clear, high-value opportunity. Once they come on board and I deploy server-side solutions, running the checker again allows me to deliver definitive before-and-after audits. The peace of mind I couldn't build myself

I build most of my own tools, so I know how to spin up a server-side GTM container on my own. The thing is — the setup was never the problem. It's maintaining it, scaling it during launches, and not getting woken up when a client's tracking breaks. Stape's managed hosting took the server off my back, and the Custom Loader recovered events I was losing to ad blockers. In the AI era, building got cheap; reliability got expensive — and that's exactly what Stape sells.

As a performance marketing…

As a performance marketing professional, one of the biggest challenges I faced was the persistent mismatch between campaign results and actual sales reports across platforms, including Google Analytics and other tracking tools. This discrepancy was largely driven by significant data loss due to browser-based tracking limitations.

After implementing Stape and moving to server-side tracking, we are now able to confidently share accurate and reliable reports with stakeholders. Initially, it was difficult to convince senior management to invest in server-side tracking, but the improvement in data accuracy and attribution quickly demonstrated its value.

Since the implementation, our campaigns have also started performing better, driven by clearer and more complete data insights. As a result, we have now decided to roll out Stape across all websites under our holding company.

In principle it's a great product until…

In principle it's a great product until you try to set it up. The videos are simple enough to follow, but are incomplete. The AI chat bot is useful but has huge knowledge gaps. After 3 days of relentless testing I admitted defeat and asked if they could set it up for me. They wanted $1500 at that point i called it. If the creator wants that sort of money then it's a pain even for them. I got a useful figure of 29% more data points tracked. But my Adwords figures were all wrong. Massive learning curve for no improvement shame as the product looks great. If you're selling a tracking product, you should be up front about the setup and how difficult it is.

They don't offer domain tracking if you…

They don't offer domain tracking if you for example use shopify markets, unless you purchase their BUSINESS PLAN FOR MINIMUM OF 100$ per month, after contacting support for custom offer, since I don't need anything else then domain tracking, they just offered me to cancel subscribtion with stape. It's worthless, egomaniacs not worth of even trying with them.

Easy to set up

I loved how easy it is to set everything up. They have this Setup Assistant that does almost everything for you! Also enjoyed their blog as it gave lots of insigts.

Cookie Keeper saved our attribution

We’ve been using Cookie Keeper for a while now, and it genuinely made our tracking feel more “complete.” Before this, we were constantly losing users between sessions (Safari was the worst), and attribution in GA4 just didn’t feel reliable.

After setup, things just started making more sense — fewer gaps, cleaner conversion paths, and more confidence in our ad data. It was easy enough to plug into our server-side setup, and since then it’s just been running in the background without any fuss.

Nothing flashy, but it actually solved a real problem for us.

Stape is an amazing platform with a lot of great features. The support is helpful, especially when dealing with complex questions. However, some of the screenshots in older articles are outdated. I reported this to support, and they mentioned they’ll fix it soon. Other than that, everything else has been perfect!

Works the way it should

As a small business owner, I'm really happy they've got a free hosting plan with perks like Stape Analytics or some power-ups. The setup was pretty straightforward and faster than I expected, all I did was just following the setup guide, and the container was running the very same day. It's not magic, there's still a learning curve if you're not technical, but the documentation is solid, and their support actually responds if you get stuck. So, since moving off the browser, the data coming to our GA4 became noticeably cleaner. Sometimes when things work the way they should, it's more than enough.

Stape's Meta CAPI does the job

I needed to configure meta capi, and read a lot that Stape has this feature. Generally, with their help, I did it with no issues at all. The guys seem to have done that hundreds of times already and may set it up with closed eyes. The only thing, the overall process took a bit more time than I expected.

Good news - the number of tracked conversions has jumped up, and this is exactly why I came to Stape. Job done!

Our setup services are handled by experienced server-side tracking and GTM experts, so the pricing reflects both the work itself and the post-setup support included.

That said, using Stape does not require purchasing a setup service. Many users configure everything themselves with the help of our documentation, guides, community resources, and our support team.

Finally got my tracking working

I was struggling to track leads for my client's business, GA4 and Facebook just weren't cooperating. With Stape, after setup things started working right away to my surprise.
The feature that stood out most for me was monitoring. It was my first time setting up server-side GTM, so getting alerts when something went wrong took a lot of stress off my shoulders.
I recommend Stape to anyone dealing with tracking headaches

critical issue closed without explanation

we have opened a critical issue where stape proxy drops 20% of our events. we have provided detailed explanation to the tickets and curl tests that prove exactly what and where goes wrong. stape closed the ticked as resolved, without any answer.

Predatory renewal terms and poor support

Predatory renewal terms paired with extremely poor customer support. Their renewal is extremely hard to cancel, and even if you do cancel they will claim that you did not. Support is effectively useless, they refuse to provide any help at all, just copy pasting the same answer. Avoid this company at all costs.
