I received a text message from Advantis with a letter attached. Within 20 minutes of receiving it, I called their customer service team and spoke with someone named Ryan.

After completing their security checks, I asked for more information about the account in question. Once I understood what the matter related to, I explained that I would call back later in the afternoon to discuss it further after gathering the relevant information.

The attitude and tone of the agent were extremely disappointing. I was repeatedly pressured to deal with the matter immediately simply because I had called in. At no point did I refuse to pay or avoid discussing the account — I only requested time to properly review the information first.

Despite this, the agent continued to pressure me and would not allow the conversation to end respectfully, insisting that I “needed to deal with it now.” The tone throughout the call felt intimidating and unnecessarily aggressive, so I politely terminated the call.

Advantis states that it is regulated by the FCA, yet the FCA’s Consumer Duty and Consumer Credit sourcebook (CONC) require firms to act in good faith, avoid foreseeable harm, and support customers in making free and informed financial decisions — not decisions made under pressure or coercive conduct.

My experience fell far below those standards, and I hope the company seriously reflects on how it communicates with customers, particularly those who may already be in vulnerable financial situations.

Can't say anything positive about people who tried to push to pay money for HMRC when I don't have to pay any.
Can't believe limited company are allowed do so it's more like scammers do.

My advisor was very polite, warm and courteous bearing in mind the subject matter. With other companies I have found individuals to be quite cold.

I was too stressed to call Avantis as this was a collection agency, however, when I did manage to call, the help I received was exceptional. The representative was extremely helpful and managed to resolve all my issues. The help also extended to calling HMRC on my behalf which I thought was amazing and supporting above and beyond my expectations.
