If you need a heat pump don’t go to either Costco or Halifax Heat pumps, here is why
In September 2025 a disabled woman needed to replace her worn out heat pump before the winter. It was a 15 000 BTU and it was her only source of heating for her home.
The old unit she had was a Lennox and when she saw the kiosk for Lennox in her local Costco she believed that buying a new Lennox from Costco would be a smart purchase. She could not have been more wrong.
The new unit was installed at the end of Oct 2025 by Halifax heat pumps and the problems started almost immediately. It was noisy from the start and it only got worse. She called the company that installed the unit and they sent a tech out who put a thermometer in the head unit and said the temps were within normal operating range. Then told her the issue was she was running the heat pump at too low a temperature. She was told not to run it below 75 degrees Fahrenheit or 24 Celsius. She had been running the heat pump between 21 and 22 Celsius and was just told that was too low.
This was the first alarm bell that something was not as it seemed. The old heat pump could be run at whatever temp it was capable of running but this 2025 model needed to be run 24 degrees C or above? That did not make any sense, but she did not argue with the tech that left without doing anything more than turning the temperature up and checking it with a thermometer.
This would be the theme over the next several months. The heat pump never worked right and failed to heat even half the home, forget the entire home. Aside from checking the temp input and output with a thermometer and turning it off and on a few times no other checks of the equipment were done. On a few occasions the heat pump shut of entirely for hours at a time. This was in the middle of winter and the heat pump was not keeping the home warm so multiple space heaters had to be purchased to attempt to keep the home warm enough to live in. At one point she was told that running the space heaters was causing a problem for the heat pump. Imagine the main source of heat not heating your home and being told that using portable space heaters to keep the home at a livable temperature was the problem rather than the heat pump being the problem.
She called Costco to complain and ask about options and if there was a refund policy on defective equipment. Originally Costco said yes there was a refund policy, and then changed their answer and said there wasn’t.
After spending a miserable winter, cold and uncomfortable and with the certain knowledge that nothing was going to be done to fix the problem, the decision was made to take the loss of money and replace the heat pump. This time reviews were carefully checked to see which installers and which manufactures had good reviews. Sadly at that point it was discovered that Lennox was not well reviewed.
When Costco originally sent Halifax Heat pumps to check the home and do up the estimate she told them clearly that she needed a new unit that performed the same as her old unit and would heat the entire home. She was told that the new 12 000 BTU unit would work as well as her old 15 000 BTU unit had. It didn’t.
The home is 970 square feet and a quick check on the internet recommends either a 15 000 or 18000 BTU unit. The new company she called came, did their own check and estimate, and quoted an 18000 BTU unit. They also offered to remove the gas from the old unit and weight it to see if it was fully charged. What a shock to find out that the Lennox Unit was supposed to have 34 ounces and yet it only had 28.8 ounces. It was undercharged. Six tech visits and not one checked to see if the unit was fully charged despite all the issues with the unit and its failure to work properly.
The part that annoys me most is that the 18 000 BTU unit was the same price as the 12 000 BTU unit she bought from Costco. I’m not saying she was ripped off but I am saying the level of customer service she got from both Costco and Halifax Heat pumps was non-existent. Costco literally left her in the cold in the middle of winter.

We wasted multiple hours of our work- day, and achieved no tangible problem- resolution, except unwarranted harassment from these designated representatives- Costco employees.
Recently, we called Costco at (888) 426 - 7826, after we emailed Costco.ca ( via their "email us" website option).
Even after multiple days, we did not receive any reply.
Thereafter, We spoke to a Ms. Lily, customer service representative, in the Ecommerce department of Costco.ca.
Lily was verbally abusive, technically incompetent, repeatedly interrupting, gave us conflicting versions of solutions , which was tantamount to bureaucratic Stonewalling. She began yelling at us, when we called her out for her errors.
We were placed on- hold for over 35 minutes.
Lily refused to connect us to a supervisor, and abruptly disconnected our phone- call, I.E. hung- up.
Thereafter, we spoke to a supervisor Mr. Olin. Colin had not even reviewed the prior relevant record (which he claimed to have done). When we pointed out his errors, he executed a Bureaucratic "cover up", acted as a defense attorney for his employee, refused to acknowledge his lapses, and abruptly disconnected our call.
We wasted multiple hours of our work- day, and achieved no tangible problem- resolution, except unwarranted harassment from these designated representatives - Costco employees.
On a Balance of Probability, it is very likely that there may be other Vulnerable Victims of such Systemic bully tactics, Misuse of vested authority, abuse of power, in dealing with ordinary taxpayers and paying customers.

I love Costco people don't understand that being an executive member has its perks. I pretty much pay my membership every year with my rewards. Products you cat get anywhere else. Cheap gas and alcohol by buying bulk.

As my wife is now wheelchair bound recovering from a serious fall and is ni longer mobile i took a video of authorizing changing me as the primary member. They didn't even look at the video. Just said i need a power of attorney. Costco has no compassion.

Does have good pricing and deals for groceries. Saves money buying bulk here and have different option to choose from. I love their foodcourt choices. Member rewards is great that you can use for your shopping.

No stars would be the right thing. So Costco opening a bunch of new stores. I hope the money they have stolen (can't find a harsher word) from me, helped them with their expansion. After 4 months, still never get my money back (it was supposed to take 7-10 days).

Costco delivered a dishwasher with live cockroaches in the box. I had to pay for a fumigator and fight with Costco to get the cost covered. They were very unapologetic and it was a lot of work to make sure the cockroaches didn't multiply in the condo community. They ony paid my costs in the end and offered no apology or other compensation.

I usually have a good experience with costco in Red deer ,yesterday I bought 2 pre- cooked lobsters for a special occasion, I steamed them for 10 minutes as they were already cooked,the flavour and texture was bland and uneatable,tasted old maybe sat in the freezer too long,buyer beware,I wont be wasting my money again on previously frozen pre- cooked anything from costco!

My ovr all experiences at Costco are as usual. Great prices,quality products, lots of people,patience getting through the store.
But today, I was shocked at check out. The cashier was polite and efficient, but the girl packing was eating cheeses and drinking a canned drink between customers and at one point forgot to pull the persons cart up so others could start filling the conveyor. Meanwhile she just kept munching away, leaving little orange finger prints behind.
I work in retail and if I was doing that at my counter they'd write me up or fire me. These people should have more respect and be more professional. I was checking out after 11:am from the Wonderland / Dingman Dr store in London On. I was in a cash lane 4 0r 5 from the door. I'm sure you have video,, you might also want to talk to who ever is in charge of those people

In Saskatchewan they took their propane out of service and said it was not profitable and they wanted those four parking spots. Even though customers seriously opposed that move Cosco didn’t listen to them. This is appalling to find that the other provinces are getting this service and Saskatchewan was ignored by cosco.
The eggs are not the right size
I buy two dozen eggs "extra large" every week at Costco. The brand is Gray Ridge egg farms. The are always ripping off the consumer. Every carton of Extra Large have nothing but Small and Medium sized eggs. I always tell them at the front desk in case Costco isn't aware of it. But nothing gets done about it. Today I opened my egg carton to find the eggs were all SMALL! This has been going on for a LONG TIME. If they don't fix it soon I will be buying my eggs elsewhere!

I am having a very bad experience with my first order after signing up for a Costco membership. My order has still not been delivered. For the past two days, I have stayed at home waiting for UPS, but I keep receiving false notifications saying that a delivery attempt was made, even though no one actually came.
During these same two days, Purolator, Amazon, and FedEx were all able to deliver to my address without any issues, yet UPS claims they could not reach me. In fact, I have never successfully received a package shipped via UPS before. UPS is by far the worst courier company I have ever dealt with.
Could you please contact UPS regarding this issue and provide me with clear information on when the delivery will actually be made?

After seeing your excellent 1.7 rating, I realized that I completely wasted my time.
Honestly, a store with a 1.7 customer satisfaction score could only choose to work with a courier like UPS, which has an even worse 1.1 rating.
At this point, the level of service makes perfect sense.
When I try to contact you, I cannot speak to a real human being. When I call UPS, I also cannot speak to a real human being.
The fact that UPS uses the exact same approach does not seem coincidental.
Never provide customer service, never give customers an email address or a live support line to complain — and the problem magically disappears.
This is the most idiotic solution approach I have ever seen.
From now on, I will use neither Costco nor UPS.
