If I could leave zero stars I would
If I could leave zero stars I would. My team was informed the day before surgery that my coverage request was denied despite the hospital repeatedly reaching out for final approval the two weeks prior. It's despicable enough to waste my time as a member but to also throw off the ORs schedule along with my surgeon's and her teams is unacceptable. I hope they don't drag their feet responding to my appeal but I expect very little from Aetna insurance at this time. If you also have a federal plan, they exclude "anything transgender" now but are too coward to stand on their discriminatory moves like the rest of these insurance companies. My procedure was for multiple reasons outside of gender affirming care, primarily health and sexual safety, but when I call for the reason from them instead of what the hospital clawed out, I'm left on hold for 30 minutes then hung up on. I wish I was surprised but I'm certainly disappointed.
Mistreated /86 year old woman lied to after taking…
86 year old woman lied to after taking over an hour to sign me up with Aetna. They were to pay my premiums with me being on food program with Medicaid. They paid January thru May stopped!! Two payments were taken out for June and July, now every month from my small Social Security deposit. Aetna is so dishonest. Now I received a letter saying my coverage with Aetna plus extra drug help will end December 31, 2026. I have noone, I live alone and pay rent.
I am not well. Never get AETNA COVERAGE!!!
so what it will take for Aetna to wake…
so what it will take for Aetna to wake up and start being a responsible and reliable health insurance?
People keep complaining and nothing is changing.
Denials upon denials. Costs rising constantly and services deteriorate.
Aetna denied the prior authorization…
Aetna denied the prior authorization for my diabetes medication because my blood work looked too good and because of this I didn't qualify for the medication. The medication they are denying is the reason my blood work is so good. Catch 22. This should be illegal.
App said I had met my deductible
App said I had met my deductible. All of a sudden once I asked for a pre authorization for a surgery I was denied the pre authorization and now they say I haven’t met my deductible and now owe about $300 for lab work that originally I was told was covered.
NIGHTMARE COMPANY
I was doing fine on my biologic with my prior insurance company. When my institution switched to Aetna, they wanted prior authorization which took months and then they wanted an appeal which took even longer. Now that the biologic is approved, it is only approved for 2 months so I guess I have to go through this whole process again. This company only cares about money. Money money, money money money.
If I could give a zero I would
If I could give a zero I would. I have refractory RLS, a disorder that has many comorbidities and a high rate of suicide because of the agony of its sufferers. I have taken every terrible medication with terrible side effects with little relief. There is a proven therapy- Nidra- approved by the FDA and paid for by original Medicare. I have had Aetna/medicare for several years, but it- illegally- refuses to pay for Nidra although it is medically necessary and proven so. I have appealed, but they heartlessly continue to deny coverage. I will be dropping Aetna at the end of this year. They are heartless and ruthless. I advise you to stay away from Aetna
Aetna Better health is the worst…
Aetna Better health is the worst insurance company. I am so tired of them always denying my mri and meds that are medically necessary. I am bout to changes to a different insurance company and file a formal complaint against them. Sorry ass losers
Worst insurance company
Worst insurance company. I supposedly have an insurance plan, but still have to shell out hundreds of dollars for every single doctor’s appointment I have. This includes almost $400 for a SINGLE appointment for a mental health visit which, I might add, does the exact opposite of what those appointments are for. Mind you, these are all “in-network” appointments. Do not go with this company. They’ll gladly take your money and leave you for dead.
RUN, don’t walk away!
Outdated information is all over their site. Finding a provider near you? “Sorry that doctor hasn’t worked in 12 years”. Next, “sorry we don’t accept your insurance even if AETNA says we do, we stopped 5 years ago”. What a joke. The providers they do have in network shouldn’t even have a license, how are you going to jump through hoops after explaining and demonstrating needs and not even give you the care you need? I’m not renewing coverage, I’d rather have no insurance than these scammers that masquerade as a medical insurance provider. I’d rather go see a witch doctor, at least he’s not going to misunderstand what I need for care, and be about as successful dealing with it.
Coverage
I have been charged for 2 different procedures in the last MONTH! They would have been covered with Humana insurance!! A total of $245.00. Also they pay $100.00 OTC every 3 months!! So I will be dropping AETNA. As of October 1st 2026.
Bad Experience All Around
My company switched to Aetna in 2024 - worst experience I've ever had with a medical insurance company. I've had HIV for 32 years so I've always had an infectious disease specialist as my primary care physician. Aetna will not allow me to have a specialist as PCP. My visits are supposed to be $20 but I get charged $40 every time - the fee for a specialist. So difficult to find other care on their website because so much info is incorrect. My doctor referred me to PT but they say it is not covered - I can't find PT that is covered by Aetna. The whole experience has been absolutely exasperating.
Here We Go Again — Months of Prescription Denials and Prior Authorization Runaround
I am updating my review because, unbelievably, I am dealing with Aetna over my medication again.
My previous experience with Aetna was already bad enough. I dealt with prescription denials, repeated phone calls, administrative runaround, and prior-authorization issues. At one point, I was told that a prior authorization was what was needed, only to continue running into problems after the requested paperwork was submitted.
Now, after temporarily losing my insurance because of unemployment and getting coverage again, I am right back in the same situation.
I have been taking this medication for nearly 20 years. My doctor has now been trying to resolve the current coverage issue with Aetna for roughly two to three months. Prior authorization paperwork has been submitted, yet coverage for the brand-name medication continues to be denied. My doctor’s office has repeatedly tried to deal with this, and we still do not have a workable resolution.
What makes the situation even more frustrating is that there is currently a shortage affecting the extended-release medication I take. Because of availability, my options for obtaining the extended-release medication are already extremely limited. The immediate-release alternative is not equivalent for me and does not work the same way for my treatment.
So now, after almost two decades on this medication, my doctor and I are spending months dealing with an insurance company over continued access to the formulation that has worked for me.
This is exactly what made my previous experience with Aetna so infuriating. Members are told to follow the process, so we follow it. We’re told to have our doctors submit prior authorizations, so they submit them. Then the authorization is denied anyway, more paperwork follows, more calls have to be made, and eventually the patient has to personally step in and fight over something their physician has already been trying to resolve.
At this point, I will be documenting every denial, every authorization, every call, every reference number, and every communication between Aetna and my doctor’s office. I intend to use every appeal, external-review, complaint, and regulatory process available to me until I receive a clear written explanation and this issue is properly addressed.
If Aetna believes the brand-name extended-release medication I have taken for years should no longer be covered, then I want the exact reason in writing. I want to know what coverage criteria were applied, what information from my physician was considered, why the prior authorization was denied, what alternatives Aetna requires, and exactly what evidence is necessary to overturn the decision.
Patients should not have to spend months fighting their insurance company after their doctors have already provided the requested information.
This is not my first experience with Aetna creating unnecessary obstacles around my prescriptions. Unfortunately, after everything that happened previously, I am now dealing with it all over again.
I will update this review as the appeal and complaint process continues.
Sincerely,
One extremely frustrated Aetna member
Customer service people are cold
Customer service people are unemotional robots. They don't know how to wish a person well. No "I hope you feel better", no "take care" nothing. It's like talking to 5th graders. Where do they dig up these stone cold humans to represent them?
This company is useless
This company is useless. Copays are ridiculus. They suck on the phone. Dont listen to what your saying and totally stupid people from outside the country. I am leaving to anothEr company as fast as possible. DO NOT SIGN WITH THESE THIEVES.
Worst insurance company I’ve ever had
Worst insurance company I’ve ever had. My employer switched to Aetna this year and I have never had trouble with an insurance company until now. It’s been 2 months of waiting for an approval for an MRI, which means two months of awful pain. This year has been awful for my health and Aetna has made it even harder on me. Would not recommend. Blue cross was way better
If you need surgery, you’re screwed.
Pray you don’t ever get told you need surgery or minor procedures that require prior authorization. You will not get it. MESSAGE TO EMPLOYERS CONSIDERING SWITCHING TO AETNA: if you truly care about your employees, please do NOT switch to them!!!
I work as a BH provider, not an Aetna member.
I work as a behavioral health provider, not an Aetna member, and they are by far the most difficult payer I've ever had to work with. Contracting, credentialing, and basic communication are all unnecessarily complicated. It's almost impossible to get clear answers, timely support, or a response at all. If you're a provider trying to partner with them, be prepared for delays, confusion, and a lot of wasted time. On a personal note, CVS Health never fails to mess up a prescription. Very rude staff who treat their employees poorly right in front of the customer. Maybe if Corporate was better or restructured, everyone would be happier. Just sad to see.
Very frustrating to deal with
Very frustrating to deal with the customer department. I had to recuperate at a different location after knee surgery due to living in a 5 fl walkup. Changing my address to what they called "travel" caused a major breakdown in communications. I signed a letter to confirm this twice, spoke to reps countless times. Yet one year later a letter surfaced that stated my insurance had been discontinued due to that the address was not verifiable!!!!! Unbelievable the incompetence!
DO NOT GO WITH AETNA THIS COMPANY HAS…
DO NOT GO WITH AETNA THIS COMPANY HAS GOT TO BE THE WORST. I HAVE BEEN STUCK WITH THEM FOR ALMOST A YEAR. I'VE ASKED NUMEROUS TIMES TO SPEAK WITH CASE MANAGER, STILL NO CONTACT. WENT TO THE GROCERY STORE YESTERDAY TO SPEND THE LAST $61 ON THE CARD BEFORE THEY EXPIRE. I KNEW I NEEDED MORE THAN THAT AMOUNT. SO I PAID FIRST WITH THE AETNA CARD AND $61 WAS CHARGED TO THAT CARD. THEN I PAID THE REMAINING BALANCE WITH MY BANK CARD. AETNA DECIDED TO PUT THE MONEY BACK ON THE CARD AND ALLOWED IT TO PAY FROM MY BANK ACCOUNT. LEAVING ME SHORT ON MY POWER BILL. I HAVE STORE RECEIPT AND BANK STATEMENT TO PROVE IT. THEY DID THIS CAUSE THE $61 EXPIRES THE NEXT DAY AT MIDNIGHT. THEY GET TO KEEP THAT MONEY AND CHARGE IT TO MY BANK. DO NOT TRUST THIS COMPANY. HUMANA GOLD IS WHAT I USED TO HAVE. THEY HAVE A DISAGREEMENT WITH MEDICARE OVER MONEY AND REFUSED TO PAY MY DOCTORS. SO I WAS FORCED TO GO TO AETNA. I PRAY DAILY FOR HUMANA TO GET IT SETTLED WITH MEDICARE SO I CAN GET BACK WITH THEM. ALL YEAR I'VE HAD TO PAY FOR SOME MEDICAL SUPPLIES $100 A MONTH. THAT NEVER HAPPENED WITH HUMANA. I AM GOING TO FILE A COMPLAINT WITH MEDICARE AGAINST AETNA. NOW I FIND OUT DOCTORS ARE NOT EVEN WANTING TO ACCEPT AETNA. WHY ARE THEY ALLOWED TO BE APPROVED BY MEDICARE? I'M GOING TODAY TO HANDLE THIS BS. THAT CRAP THEY PULLED YESTERDAY WAS THE FINAL STRAW. AND I KNOW BETTER THAN TO CALL AND ASK FOR A CASE MANAGER. THAT'S OBVIOUSLY NOT GONNA HAPPEN. BUT I WILL BE GETTING THAT MONEY BACK IN MY BANK ACCOUNT. STAY AWAY FROM AETNA IF YOU VALUE WHAT LITTLE DISABILITY YOU GET. WHEN I'M DONE THEY'LL NEVER FORGET ME.
