The Big Problem With Synchrony Bank
Synchrony Bank has been extremely frustrating to deal with. They are quick to approve large credit limits, but they are also quick to reduce those limits or close accounts if you do not use the card enough or if you pay it off too consistently. That makes no sense to me.
In my case, having a card with a $5,000 limit and no balance should have been a positive thing. Instead, when the account was suddenly closed for no clear reason, it hurt my overall available credit and increased my utilization, which negatively impacted my credit score. Customers should not be punished for using credit responsibly.
This kind of behavior seems to be a pattern with Synchrony, and it feels unfair. Approving large limits so easily and then taking them away just as quickly creates unnecessary harm for customers who are doing the right thing.
If you want it to hit even harder, here is a slightly sharper version:
Synchrony Bank is quick to hand out large credit limits, but just as quick to reduce them or close accounts when you do not use the card enough or when you pay it off responsibly. That is exactly what happened to me, and it is incredibly frustrating.
Closing or cutting a $5,000 account with no balance for no obvious reason does real damage. It reduces available credit, increases utilization, and can hurt a customer’s credit score even though they have done nothing wrong. Responsible cardholders should not be penalized for keeping balances low or paid off.
This seems to be very consistent with Synchrony, and it does not make sense. Their practices feel unfair and harmful to customers who are trying to manage credit wisely.

Terrible! I applied for a credit card that’s through this bank. I was told numerous times that they can’t help me because my credit account was frozen. I have been on the phone with all three credit bureaus and my credit report is not frozen. I even went online and verified this. I would have liked to have had this credit card, but it’s not worth the hassle!!! Does anybody know what they’re doing there?????

I will never get a store credit card backed by Synchrony. I have never been late with any of my payments but 4 times in the last 2 years they either suddenly close out an account or cut the credit line to just above your balance owing. This trashes your credit score as your "credit utilization" goes to like 96% causing your credit score to take a huge hit. Never had any accounts closed or reduced credit lines with any other provider...Just with Synchrony. horrible company to do business with. Avoid at all costs

An employee of Synchrony bank who had access to my signing information got their feeling hurt by me and call synchronic bank pretending to be me and closed two of my credit cards. Upper management would not confirm this, told me they would listen to the call of the person (I say employee) pretending to be me conversation. This company has the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced in my life. One payment was missed from my account and $41.00 plus interest was added to my balance plus other fees. I put my auto pay set to a specific amount and they took out a double payment. I’ve been calling every week and no success. The manager just talks in circles saying the same rehearsed phrase over and over again. Save your time and money and do not use them. You will thank me later.
Bait and Switch - Zero Integrity.
Same as everyone else. Bait and switch on mulitiple accounts. 1) PayPal credit account of a decade plus switched to a PayPal Credit Card with all new terms and 32% interest because I didn't "decline" the credit card offer. 2) transactions fall off promotional and are only on "statements" so website is not accurate accounting of balances. 3) Care Credit (different account) could not confirm payment of balance "at this time" would incur any additional fees/charges that would be assessed as promotional offer is expiring. Representatives seemed trained to be evasive. Scam company. Take business elsewhere. Far more reputable companies out there.

I have been a PayPal customer for over 30 years, but using a Chase credit card for every day purchases. I decided I wanted to put all of my business purchases on a separate card and opened a PayPal Credit Card in about 2 minutes with a small limit. Since receiving the card, I've put on a few purchases for fuel, food, Amazon and the cleaners...all WITHOUT any drama!
Today I wanted to fund an App I use for lottery purchases in my state which I have been doing for years with the Chase card, no issues. BUT today, I kept receiving "Sorry we cannot complete the transaction, contact your bank "Synchrony". So I called and got some of the truly dumbest, incapable of reasoning customer service agents I have ever had the "pleasure of dealing with!" After the agent said there were no issues on their end, I still could not load the PayPal Credit Card onto the App to use. After being on hold for several minutes, the agent came back and said (this is good!)"After speaking with my supervisor, we need to get a higher level of authorization from you. You must SUBMIT a video of yourself telling us your name, address, phone number, email address and SS#!!" I BLEW A GASKET!!!! My credit score is WELL over 825, have other credit cards with huge limits and was approved for this PAYPAL CREDIT CARD in less than 2 minutes!!

I really dislike that this bank is responsible for so many store credit banks. I have all my accounts in great standing and payoff most before the promotion ends. Then they will unexpectedly close an account when you pay it down or reduce the limit to what little you owe. It messes with your credit too due to the low balance rule to open line. How is this bank not fined or being held accountable? Meanwhile commenity bank increases credit line which I keep a low balance on. Ie: Home Depot 1600 limit Lowe’s went from 800 to 600 then 400 then closed with a 321 balance with more than minimum payments. This bank is more than trash

This is the worst company I have ever worked with. I have made way more than expected monthly and because I decided to make an early payment in the beginning of this month and planned on making another one today a week before the due date. They keep harassing me via phone and email. For what? Being a great customer? I will never work with them again.

I recently made an online purchase for a friend and used my PayPal acct. The company turned out to be a scam. They advertised another companies $5000 drone as their own and had it priced at $114.99. They then sent a drone that cost$10 on temu. After multiple calls I've determined they have zero customer protection against fraud. They also have no email address to send them documentation on a fax number. Waisted money paying to fax them the info on top of getting ripped off by the scammer. All customer service calls also get you someone in india.

Absolute worst customer service I've ever received from a bank. I created an account to establish a new cd. I set up the transfer to fund the cd through their portal by electronic transfer. I checked online the next day, it was processing to go through. The following morning I get two emails. They deactivated my account for "security reasons" and gave a phone number to reactivate it. I spoke to two customer service reps and two managers. The reps told me the account was under review and that I'd get a letter mailed to me with the decision. I couldn't get any information about why there was a review or even how long the review process was. The managers told me that my account was already reviewed and closed this morning. They could not tell me any info at all, not the reason for review or even how to fix it, they just wanted to get me off the phone. I asked them if I was supposed to try to restart the account and was told they already deleted my profile and that it would be better to take my business to a different bank. They had zero interest or intent in helping me solve this problem.

I’ve had an extremely frustrating experience with Synchrony Bank, and I would not recommend them to anyone.
I’ve consistently paid my balance on time every single month and even paid the account in full. Despite responsible usage and maintaining a solid credit score, my credit line was suddenly slashed down to $100 with no meaningful explanation. That kind of drastic reduction is completely unreasonable given my payment history and credit profile.
To make matters worse, I originally opened the account through an Amazon promotion. I was approved, used the card responsibly for about six months, and had zero issues—until out of nowhere, they reduced my limit and destabilized my account. No warning, no transparency, no justification that makes sense.
This kind of behavior feels arbitrary and unfair. It punishes responsible customers instead of rewarding them. Actions like this can negatively impact credit utilization and overall financial stability, which is unacceptable from a financial institution.
Because of this experience, I will be closing all of my accounts with Synchrony. I’ve completely lost trust in how they handle customer accounts and credit decisions.
There are far better, more reliable banks out there that actually value their customers. Synchrony is not one of them
