Do NOT use Hertz-Penske
Do NOT use Hertz-Penske. Never had such a horrible experience renting a one-way truck and we've moved a lot over the years. We booked way in advance for a 22' truck with car tow. Movers were to come the next morning at 8am. Got to the Home Depot at the appointment time and were told they didn't have the vehicle. After a wait, we were told that a different location had one and switched the reservation to there. We got in front of that Home Depot and Hertz-Penske called to say they were mistaken, to go to a different Home Depot that was very far away at this point. We were told that they had called that Home Depot and that they definitely had the truck. We got there, and guess what? No vehicle. They had a 26' but after being on hold with Penske for too long to get that approved, the guy shrugged and said there was nothing he could do. As a side note, I am 68 and my husband 71. We should have been helped way more but the incompetence was frightening. I called the 800 number and they called the last Home Depot. They were told they indeed had the 26' and to go back. I was told by the employee that someone would definitely be able to help with the car tow, after we asked multiple times if they could help. My husband dropped me off at home and drove back, another 30 minutes and they had the vehicle. They showed him the basics, but wouldn't help him figure out how to strap the wheels on. Another delay, so now it is 4 hours after our original appointment and we are both exhausted. I called the district manager who told me they couldn't help with the strap due to liability reasons. My husband finally figured it out and got the vehicle on the road, but each time he goes over a bump, it sounds like an earthquake. I'm sitting here worried that he won't make it home in one piece. This is by far the absolute worst experience with a truck rental ever. Now we have to lug a 26' truck towing our brand new minivan across the country. Never again with Hertz-Penske!!
Penske Trucks being used/ rented to…
Penske Trucks being used/ rented to cross union picket lines at Rogers Sugar in Vancouver, unbelievable!
I had a reservation for approximately 7 AM
I had a reservation for approximately a month. When they called me to verify my 12’ reservation I changed it to a 16’ but same time. The rep seemed elated that I changed it to a 17’. About a week before my pickup time I switched my time to pick up from 8am to 7am. When I arrived there was one person ahead of me but the gentleman at Home Depot was having much difficulty w/the Penske computers. When I finally got my truck, did my walk around and then paid, I went to leave and the windowshield was filthy. Tried to clean it and no washer fluid! Had to wait to talk to the representative. Well after a little bit of back and forth I put washer fluid in it. Pimped (primed) it several times and it still wouldn’t work. Had to call the local Penske office. Truck on its way. Longer story short I didn’t leave w/the truck I was renting until 9:10 AM! When I got to my destination and then wanted to turn the truck in….pitch black out in Alabama on small winding roads the location was an hour away. I thank Penske for the military discount, the extra day U-Haul doesn’t give, and the unlimited mileage; however, being a single 66 year old woman trying to move 1300 miles and having the hiccups in the experience of renting from Penske(I usually use UHaul) was not really worth it, especially since I turned the truck in in 3 days.
Please make sure that all fluids are filled in the trucks before sending them out. Get the computers up to date. Teach your mechanics to be a little less assuming that women do not know what they are talking about or doing with trucks. I was in the USAF for 10 1/2 years working with refueling aircraft and large fuel trucks….I knew what I was doing.

Rosedale Service Manager
Our company is based out of Australia and we provide a Snap On quality tool for half the price. We were given permission to come in so the techs could compare an alternative. We checked in with the Service manager as a courtesy and we were promptly told not to come back because they only dealt with one company. My driver pointed to a gentleman who had given us permission to come into the shop and the foreman said “He’s Nobody don’t come back” I have never heard of a company deciding how an employee is going to spend their money, nor why your person in charge is so respectful to others. He is bad face for your company and probably for the employees who have to work under him.
Confirmed reservation twice with me
Confirmed reservation twice with me. When I arrived to pick up the truck, they told me there was nobody working at the site. But that I could drive 45 minutes to pick up another truck. Since I had movers coming, that was not possible.
5 STAR SERVICE!
The representative (owner?) was very patient and friendly. There were so many options available that I asked a million questions. He was knowledgeable and communicated clearly. He was very helpful. All billing and quotes arrived in minutes in a clear, concise manner. The truck was perfect for me. It was immaculate, parked right in front of the door when I arrived. 5 Star Service from start to finish. A GREAT BIG THANK YOU TO THE HAZLETON, PA PENSKE TEAM!
I purchased a truck from Conyers
I purchased a truck from Conyers, Ga location. The sales rep and coordinator were so friendly and helpful in the experience. There was a slight issue with the grill of my truck and they got it fixed with no problem
Truck had a suspiciously faulty or broken gas gauges
This place inside the Home Depot near H street in Chula Vista really has horrible trucks that have faulty gas gauges. The truck I rented showed 3/4 full tank but when I pumped gas into it the needle did not go higher than 3/4. WTH! This is sketchy!
A BIG THANK YOU for help in a tough time….
Our move was nerve-racking, but Doug (one of the movers) went above and beyond to help once we got to our destination. He was awesome and I would definitely recommend him. He was polite, friendly, and extremely helpful. From unloading the moving truck, making sure furniture was placed where I wanted it, driving the truck back for me, making sure the gas tank was filled (I paid, but he assured that it was full), unloading the car carrier, etc. etc. he was a blessing! Especially after such a rough move for us……
Hundreds of miles on treacherous ICY interstates (35 mph or less for at least 5 of those long hours/days). Seeing all the accidents made it even more nerve-racking! Making matters worse, before we are “home”, my husband gets a call saying his father is dying. He unloaded my car from the car carrier, but had no time to unload anything from the truck before he driving several hours more to see his father. He would not be back for at least 5 or 6 days.
I could not unload the truck by myself and return it. I called Penske for help and they sent Doug and his assistant. I was so glad they did! I breathed easier once they came and started to empty the van. I am so grateful for the help! Especially for going above and beyond in such an emotional time for me. A BIG THANK YOU to Doug!
Left for Dead by Penske
Left for Dead by Penske! Notes
1. The 1st truck died within the 1st 60 miles.
2. We arrived, as instructed, at 3pm the next day to oversee movement of everything we owned from truck 1 to truck 2. Nobody at the facility knew why we were there.
3. Truck 1 was completely lost, truck 2 had not been scheduled, and the moving crew (4 people promised) had not been hired yet.
4. Manager Carlos got the ball rolling, but left around 4pm. New-guy Matthew could not seem to fathom any part of the problem or solution; deer in the headlights. Eventually, progress was made toward a plan.
5. We were rented a second truck but not asked whether we wanted insurance. We were billed for a second truck – unbeknownst to us at the time.
6. We were told by Matthew that Truck 2 was newer with less miles; the exact opposite was true:
a. Truck #1 (Year 2023, Miles 19,796)
b. Truck #2 (Year 2022, Miles 73,142)
7. We thought we had accident insurance but did not (wait, it keeps getting worse). We had a small accident and are now in serious financial jeopardy. The rental form makes it look like we have insurance for this. We are probably going to get sued.
8. We only learned we had been billed for BOTH trucks 2 days AFTER the move. Credit cards have limits, and we are at, near, or over ours. If we had exceeded the limit during the move, we would not have had money for fuel, food, shelter, automatic payments, move-in costs, or emergencies. No warning. No remorse.
9. A moving crew of 2 (not 4) arrived around 5:00pm and got started around 5:30pm. Matthew locked us out of the building and left. To his credit, he was courteous, he gave us bottled water, and he was the last Penske employee to leave for the day. Still – we were left for dead.
10. Others arrived a couple hours later – now there were 5. They unloaded everything in the parking lot, in the dark, and in the snow. They were fast, but not careful. Our personal (not Penske) moving blankets, ropes, and moving straps were not used. We experienced significant damage to our belongings and do not really know whether every box got loaded. One guy loaded a long blue plastic tote into his personal van as we were leaving. Did it contain garbage or our tax returns? We will not know for months.
11. Once our belongings were moved to truck 2, the moving crew asked for payment. As it turns out, they were not Penske employees! One found the job through Craigslist. They expected us to pay them! Now it is dark, we do not really know where we are, we do not have money to pay them, everyone is cold, and things are starting to turn a little ugly.
12. The sub-sub-contractor who hired them/had their money would not answer their phone calls or texts. He was ripping these guys off while we were left to deal with the consequences! We called Penske and got the one, single, non-useless Penske employee on call to help us. Kudos to her if you can track her down – let her run the Penske if nobody else wants to.
13. During the time our belongings were still being loaded, two customer “service” reps (if you can call them that) cheerfully called to verify we were back on the road. We were not, and still had a 1,500 mile drive ahead of us. They seemed confused because their information indicated we were fine. This was a 36-hour delay with no accountability.
14. The sub-contractor could not reach the sub-sub-contractor and called us. We stayed with the moving crew for over an hour until they got paid. It was not our responsibility, but somebody had to be the grown-ups at this point. We all left friends, but this whole thing did not have to happen. Note that some of the movers were discussing stealing all of your trucks’ catalytic converters in lieu of payment. I do not think they were joking.
15. Here is another minor point, since I started toward the middle. We paid for Penske moving blankets and did not receive them when it came time to pick-up truck 1. These were removed from our bill but were not available by the time our first moving crew arrived. So, damage occurred in both moves – both on Penske’s watch.
16. This list is by no means complete- but it is all I can think of right now. Penske wrecked our move, got us sued, and maxed out our credit card.
My experience renting a truck from Penske
I moved from VA to CA and I decided to rent a truck to move myself. I searched U-Haul, Penske and Ryder.
Penske had a much better price, about $1000 cheaper than U-Haul and their truck was new (3000 miles).
Comparing renting trucks from U-Haul and Penske, Penske customer service at the pick-up and at the destination was extremely exceptional, way beyond my expectation.
For me, as the 1st time using Penske it is the #1 company in the rent a truck market.
