It's all about the Benjamin's

Sold my swing bike at the Chicago auction. I couldn't be there to watch my bike being sold (I bet it sold really fast after it got to the reserve price I put on it). I had to bowl in my Friday morning league. I didn't want to screw anyone who was going to buy the bike, so I was honest with all my descriptions about it, not like the swing bike sold at Elmer's auction (I pity the person that bought it at Elmer's for $4950 with missing and replaced parts. The person who bought my bike got a bargain, all original with no missing or replaced parts. On the Mecum website it showed my bike's price that I thought it sold for and I was expecting a check that was $200 less (seller's fee) than the hammer price. I received a check that was a lot lower what I thought I would get. They actually put in the buyer's fee in the final shown price. Luckily, I don't have anything else to sell through them.

I don't know why Mecum has to charge everybody an admission charge just to come in and watch the auction. I can see them charge people who want to bid but not watch. Once the money starts to come in there is no stopping the greed. CHARGE EVERYBODY!!! And they probably pay their workers next to nothing. I bet they are volunteers and have to pay Mecum to drive the cars in for the auction. They make the volunteers pay at the pro golf tournaments.

It sounds like you're upset that your bike didn't bring as much as the Swing Bike at the Elmer's Auction. There are a number of factors that come into play when comparing the true value of similar items.

It also sounds like you have some questions/comments regarding our business model.

Please contact us if you would like to further discuss any of these items. We're more than happy to have a conversation.

Our consignors have the option to run vehicles with or without a reserve price. That is entirely your decision and we apologize if that was not made crystal clear.

Please contact us if you would like to discuss this further.

Cheated. Bought a 1974 restored Bronco in…

Bought a 1974 restored Bronco from Mecum Auctions in Houston. Hired them to deliver it and they wrecked it unloading it. They took it back to Houston for repairs and I haven’t seen the car in 16 months They prefer not to communicate with me . I don’t even know where my car is. I thought Mecum was reputable. That’s what I get for thinking.

Mecum facilitated and paid for these repairs over a year ago. It's our understanding that you were in direct communication with the repair shop, and that this was all resolved.

If this is not the case, please contact us directly.

Bought 2 motorcycles from the Mecum…

Bought 2 motorcycles from the Mecum auction recently. I would have thought they at least made sure these were quality bikes to sell at auction. I was an online bidder. I was wrong both bikes need a lot of work. Stripped spark plug another has no spark at all. I didn’t steal the bikes for what I paid. Very disappointed. I would be better off just buying on EBay where most sellers are held accountable if they sell garbage. Mecum allows trash to be sold.

This occurred over a years ago and Mecum is just now responding to call and work things out. Yeah right! Thanks for nothing!

AUCTION PACE WAY TOO FAST ON THE NO RESERVE BIKES

Sold two motorcycles (no reserve) in the January 2022 Vegas auction. f153 (mustang estimate $15k - $29k) & f117.1 (harley fxr estimate $20k - $30k).

I found out months later that mecum lost the title to the harley. They called me and wanted me to jump through a bunch of hoops getting them a new title. I said "after you sold my bike/s for such a low price, not a chance!". They then gave the harley buyer my contact info and he badgered me for months about getting him a title. Mecum had my title. It's their responsibility.

Mecum does not take adequate time to get bids for the bikes listed with no reserve... they push them through with as little effort and time spent selling as possible. One rotation on the turn table and that's it!

The mustang was pushed on the block, introduced and then they hammered it SOLD just 40 seconds later! It sold for a disappointing $9k which was well below the $15k-$29k estimate. 40 seconds is all the time mecum gave to selling that bike. In total they made almost $3k for 40 seconds of "work".

The fxr harley f117.1 hammered sold in about a minute for $14k, well below its $20k-$30k estimate.

I get it, you have 1750 motorcycles consigned and you NEED to get them all across the block in the 4-5 day auction. You don't want to spend 10 hours a day selling them. I think 6 hour days were average for this 5 day auction. 300-350 bikes sold in 6 hours. That's about a minute or less per bike.

Mecum needs to either have less motorcycles OR make the auction longer. It's not fair to no reserve sellers to get shafted like this. To protect the customer, the contract should be amended to add "A reasonable amount of time will be spent auctioning this motorcycle or car".

This was a bucket list item of mine and I was sadly disappointed in the sale price of my 2 bikes. Frank and Dana were very nice though.

EDIT TO RESPOND TO MECUM: Your business model at the motorcycle auctions (where you have to get almost 2000 motorcycles across the block in 4 days) is to run them across as fast as possible. You line them up on the stage fender to fender. The bikes are so close to each other that most bidders have no idea what motorcycle is even up for auction.

You make a few hundred less in fees for each bike sold but the sellers lose thousands. You end up making MORE money because you sell more motorcycles in the auction. Just stuff the auction as full of motorcycles as you can and then run them across the block as fast as you can. Mecum is the only financial winner at the motorcycle auctions. Not cool.

The ONLY time you took a few extra seconds to get more bids on a motorcycle is when it had a reserve. Why? Because you make no money if you can't sell a no reserve bike.

The Vegas 2023 motorcycle auction was the same length (4 days) as the 2020, 2021, 2022 auctions that all had 1750 bikes. YOU ADDED 250 MORE MOTORCYCLES IN 2023! GREEDY GREEDY GREEDY. You can't devote enough time to fairly sell 1750 bikes in 4 days so what do you do? You add 250 MORE bikes to the 2023 auction! WOW MECUM?

I would NEVER put another motorcycle in your auction. You all should be ashamed of how fast you run all the no reserve bikes across the block.

Hello-

Thank you for the feedback.

Our business model is such that, the more money we realize for our sellers, the more money we make. That said, our goal is to bring top dollar for every motorcycle that crosses our auction block.

More time on the block does not necessarily equate to more bids coming in. Our highly-skilled auctioneer team understands this, and works to realize market value.

Please contact us if you would like to discuss any of this further.

I bought a STAR Car from Mecum in…

I bought a STAR Car from Mecum in orlando 2021 Summer sale . They said it was original paint “NOT” took to two local shops that work on cars and they stated it has paint work on different parts which I noticed one out in the sun.I called right away and spoke to the claims people and sent several photos which clearly shows paint issues. A day later claims calls me back saying upper management is out state at a sale and will call me back So next day claims (Dan ) said let’s see about unwinding the deal because photos clearly show it’s not all original. Next day I spoke to claims again and they asked me to drive the car to DAX auction we’re the dealer who sold them the car will meet me and he was totally rude I explained and tried to show him my concerns and all he said is all cats from factory have bondo & over spray and different color bolds holding fenders on . So he pulls out a paint meter and said it’s all good I inspected and we will not make good on it and I shouldn’t believe body shops and people who restore classic cars they don’t know what there talking about . So he the dealer who sold car to Mecum said sorry . So Mecum “Dan “ calls me back and said sorry my upper management said you stuck with car and we won’t be unwinding it . I asked why he stated the seller from dealer said don’t have any paint Wow I said I will now have to take legal action he started you will have to do what you have to do it’s upper management said . I was shocked I paid $21,000for a original paint car that has paint work . Don’t trust Mecum they misreputation the cars and don’t back up what they sell cars . Also went to a classic street car place and asked if I can put on Consignment they said not a problem but you’re not gonna get nearly what you want for the vehicle because it has patches of paint work throughout the vehicle. So buyers beware Troy
