Best 2 Weeks of My Life
My two week trip to La Romana was probably the most amazing of my life. Post-placement discussions with newly made friends were so much fun, with every person having a story crazier than the previous one. Watching doctors in the OR confirmed my passion for surgery, and I am even more passionate. From the people to the landscapes, Gap Medics La Romana was an experience I will never forget, and would do it again in a heartbeat.
I would highly recommend Gap Medics
I would highly recommend Gap Medics for students. Gap Medics answered all my questions and their support put me at ease throughout the organisation of my trip. Additionally the team that I met in Thailand were very nice, helpful and made the experience what it was.
I learned lots and made great friends. It was an amazing experience.
Amazing Program!
This is an opportunity you cannot pass up. At first, I was hesitant and a bit scared, but once I got to the Dominican Republic, I knew my life was changing. I only had a week there, but I made 5 incredible friends who I've spoken to everyday since I left. I met people from all over the world with similar goals as mine and had amazing conversations about medicine. It was incredible to see so many surgeries and have mentors that took the time to explain exactly what was happening. This experience was like no other, and it gave me the opportunity to see that nursing is absolutely 100% the career I want to do. Not to mention there was so much time for activities like a half day trip to an island, beach trips, and more. Unforgettable, and I'd recommend Gap Medics to anyone.
Medical Shadowing in Santo Domingo
The Gap Medics Program in Santo Domingo was so much more than I expected. Amina, Barbara, Ariel and the staff catered to our needs in the beautiful house we were staying at in a better part of the city. They made sure we made it to our placements and has a number of fun trips like horseback riding and trips to Los Ojos and Bayahibe.
Even more importantly, the placement was amazing. While I expected to be watching for a most of the day, we got some hands-on experience scrubbing up next to the doctors. While I was in the anesthesia and orthopedics department at Hospital Dario Contreras, I got to see a number of neurosurgeries, maxillofacial surgeries, emergency cases and consultations. The trip really inspired me and gave me some great talking points for upcoming college and fellowship interviews.
Very inspiring opportunity. I truly miss the mentors and staff that helped make this experience abroad amazing!
Best time of my life
The Warsaw program was amazing from start to finish, everyone was so nice and helpful. My mentor was the best and gave me an unforgettable experience. Made incredible friends... an opportunity everyone should take if they have the chance.
Real 100%
At first I thought that this was not real. In my head , I didn't know that this was possible to watch surgeries 1 meter away from the patient's bed. This was an incredible experience. I came to Poland, knowing that I wanted to be a doctor but I was 40% sure about it. After my third day at the hospital, I knew I wanted to follow medicine 120%!
Dominican Republic - Great life experience
I signed up for gap medics community health care for two weeks and it was one of the best experiences I've had with patients. The Doctors I worked with are knowledgable, keen for their students to learn and engage with the whole clinical experience. The other students that I met out there soon become your close friends and you get time to explore the local area as well relax by the best beaches in the world. I would recommend anyone who's thinking about studying a medical related degree or just interested in clinical experience in a foreign country to sign up!
Warsaw, Poland
It was such an incredible experience! I loved every single second I spent with my housemates, the Gap Medics team, and at the hospital! I learned so much out of this experience and it was a great opportunity for me.
La Romana, Dominican Republic Experience
My experience in La Romana was one which was both educational in the field of medicine and in life's lessons. The accomodations, the staff, the students, the mentors all were beautiful people that overall made this experience the trip of a lifetime. I highly recommend anyone to embark on a Gap Medics trip as I know I will definitely be returning for another in the future.
My Gap Medics experience in La Romana, Dominican Republic
I cannot stress enough how amazing this experience was. I met the most amazing people that turned into family, the staff was incredible, and the mentors were engaged with you. I really got to see how hospitals differ in the Dominican Republic from the United States, and it is incredibly sad. Patients have nothing and sometimes need to pay for their own equipment in order to get surgery. Unfortunately, if they cannot pay for equipment, then they can die. The doctors have the largest hearts and work with what they have in the best way possible. They were able to answer all of my questions and taught me so much! Global Health Tutorials were so informative and I really took a lot from them. The doctors who hosted the tutorials were interested in what we saw in the hospitals each day, and not just on throwing information at us. I met the most genuine people on this trip who are just like me. I was nervous that we would all be all work and no fun, but that was not the case. Every day after work we would sit by the pool or do a fun activity like snorkeling or going to the beach. We stayed up late talking every night and started the next morning laughing. On weekends, we went on a catamaran ride to an island and on a horseback riding trip another day. My two weeks here were nonstop learning and fun and I cannot wait to book another Gap Medics trip. I'm hoping to return to the Dominican Republic in December in Santo Domingo, and then reunite with my friends in Thailand next summer for a three week placement. Gap Medics has given me another family of students, staff, and mentors, that I will hold close to my heart forever, and I could not be anymore blessed to have experienced this amazing opportunity.
This is a great experience for …undergraduates shadowing abroad!
This is a great experience for undergraduate students looking to shadow and intern abroad in medical fields. My Gap Medic dentistry placement in Thailand was AMAZING and a trip of a lifetime. I was able to experience a wonderful culture and observe dental procedures from some of the top Thailand dentists in Phitsanulok, Thailand at the same time. A dream come true. Dentistry is my passion, It was a pleasure being able to experience first-hand the logistics, techniques, and surgeries associated with the field of dentistry in Thailand.
My nephew subsequently attended a gap …
My nephew subsequently attended a gap medics placement after being let down by another provider. He found gap medics to be of a good standard.
Gap Medics in the Dominican Republic
Gap Medics is a great program would definitely recommend! Be open to meeting new people from different places with different personalities. Dominican Republic is beautiful and you get to discover it as much as you want after placement. At the hospital, staff were friendly and it was an awesome experience!
It was an amazing experience
Amazing program!
Amazing program!
Spent two weeks in Pula, Croatia and wishing that I would have been there for 2 more! My first week I was in ER, and saw a plentiful of interesting cases. In the second week I was in abdominal surgery and watched 2-3 surgeries each day. On the weekend I travelled to Venice by bus with other students on the program, and explored Croatia with the help of the incredible placement coordinators. Would recommend this program to anyone who is interested in understanding life in a hospital, and those considering medicine for their future. Doctors spoke English and explained everything that was going on. Thank you Gap Medics!
Best experience ever!
Best experience ever!! Spent two weeks in Thailand making great friends, watching really cool surgeries and exploring Northern Thailand.
The best experience
The best experience. Everyone was professional and helpful.
My amazing two weeks in the Dominican Republic
I spent 2 weeks in the Dominican Republic shadowing nurses. The first week I spent in the public hospital, which was an amazing and eye opening experience. The mentors were so helpful in explaining everything that they were doing and showing me all of the procedures which have to be undertaken when caring for a patient. This hospital gave me the chance to see some people with conditions that I had never even heard of before and also see how the doctors and nurses do so much for the patients with the little resources that they have available to them, they are truly amazing! I had the chance to see so many different things and was able to experience every ward within the hospital. The second week I then spent in the private hospital, I would highly recommend spending two weeks here so that you get chance to go to both hospitals and see the difference because it really is huge! Here I got the chance to see so many different operations which you would never be allowed to watch at home. The doctors and nurses explain what is happening and why they are doing certain things in certain ways whilst they are doing it so it is a very educational experience. We also got shown things like how to take blood pressure and blood sugar levels. In your free time then you can go visit some of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen (I would recommend going to Soana island!) Everyone from the mentors, to the staff at the house, to the other students that are with you are so lovely, helpful and friendly. If you have a passion for working within health care, want to visit a beautiful island and meet some friends from all over the world I would highly recommend gap medics!
An amazing opportunity to take!
Gapmedics was truly one of the best experiences I have ever had!! The staff members were amazing and we were like one huge family by the end of my placement. Not only did I make new friends that I will cherish for life, but even after our placements back in our own countries around the world, we are still in contact. The gapmedics house was so spacious and cozy, we were also lucky enough to have an amazing staff member who cooked the majority of our meals each week:P
Furthermore, we were also given an orientation tour by the gapmedics staff members on how to buy transport tickets and how to get around the city, ending with a welcome dinner which was super nice! The gapmedics house also had information booklets on suggestions of where to go and all the routes from the house to those places which was great for us as foreigners and gave us plenty to do on the weekends when we weren't on our placements.
The placements itself was also a completely different experience!! I spent my first week in the neurosurgery department in the children's hospital and the second week in the Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) department of another hospital. Our mentors were amazing as they took time out to explain in detail all the different cases and let us sit in on meetings and any of their daily errands. It was a privilege and honour to have been able to stand in on multiple surgeries such as Spinals, Open heart, Tumor extraction, Cosmetic reconstructions of the skull and surgery on the Ears, Nose and Larynx. Opportunities that are not easy to come by, and even just through observing, I learnt heaps! Not only is Gapmedics placement supposed to be fun and mind-blowing, but it was also educational. Each week we would have a session with a doctor where we discussed and learned about health issues affecting the country itself as well as worldwide. Here we learnt about things that aren't taught in school, and if the placement in the hospital doesn't give you an insight on potential paths that you could take in the future, these discussions were a great opportunity to get further insight from someone who has studied and is now working in the medical field. Overall Gapmedics is something I will never forget, their staff were caring, the people I met were so friendly and open and everything was so well organised that there were no complications whatsoever. So to anyone wanting to get a placement, DO IT!! You definitely won't regret it :))
