Amazing experience!
Amazing experience!! Super well organized and had an amazing time at the hospital placements. The staff are so friendly and helpful and truly made it an ease to live there, get around, and enjoy our time. I recommend this to any Prehealth student because you will experience so many fun and interesting things and you will have the time of you life. GapMedics and Thailand truly opened my eyes a bit more to the world and it's wonderful opportunities.
Warsaw - Gastroenterology
This wasn't a terrible experience but I was expecting a bit more. After spending a week in Warsaw I've learnt just how much paperwork doctors actually have to do... and I learnt this the hard way. The only thing more boring than doing paperwork, is watching someone do it... I was promised a week full of interesting procedures to watch, and for this much money that is what I was expecting, but I ended up watching around 40 of the same 5 minute procedure, watching the mentor (she was very nice by the way) do paperwork, and spending the rest of the day sharing one chair in the corner of the room with another girl... I still have bruises.
All I can say is, if you're looking for a thrilling experience, pick a surgical speciality to shadow; but if you're looking for a more realistic experience, pick something such as gastroenterology. This was the kind of experience that I could have gotten for free somewhere in the UK and I'm disappointed that this much money went into watching one procedure on replay and a woman doing paperwork.
After talking to some of the housemates who were put into things like anaesthesiology and neurosurgery, I wish I had picked one of these as they seemed to have new cool stories to share everyday - they also seemed to have learnt a great deal more about the medicine itself which is more than I can say even after asking a barrage of questions to try and keep things interesting.
I feel bad putting such a negative review on here because all the Gap Medic employees were great and really did their best to make this a worthwhile experience.
The best experience of a life time!
Having been to two destinations via gap medics, I can highly recommend anyone considering to be apart of this amazing opportunity! Trust gap medics, you'll never regret it! :)

Gapmedic is an amazing company run by professional and helpful people both here in the U.K. and abroad. My daughter spent two weeks in the Dominican Republic on a midwifery placement. She had the time of her life and was taking part in events she could never have done in the uk. Her experience there was the reason, we believe, that she has a place at university this year, after trying for three years to get onto such a highly competitive course. The people abroad were so caring and encouraging. I cannot recommend Gapmedic enough, they are truly fantastic!!
Gap Medics - Dominican Republic Midwifery Department
Gap Medics was a very good program. I spent my college spring break doing this program and would not have spent it any other way. Gap Medics exposed me to the Dominican Republic culture, broadened my knowledge on the medical field, as well as allowed me to meet many different types of people around the world. By doing this program I became even more sure that becoming a doctor is what my heart truly wants. Next year during my senior year of college I do plan on participating this program again. I highly suggest individuals who are pre-med / professional attend this program.

I spent two weeks in the Dominican Republic with gap medics and it was an amazing experience! The team out there were great and looked after us very well. The hospital placements were good and I learnt a lot. The placements were only in the mornings which meant in the afternoons we could do extra activities if we wanted. However if you do an extra activity you have to pay for the taxi there and back so you spend a lot more on taxis than you think! But saying that, the activities are all lots of fun and worth doing! I took around 12,000 pesos (£220GBP) and roughly $280USD (£220GBP) and that just about lasted me. I decided to take all my money in cash which I put in a locker in the house. I didn't want to risk an ATM swallowing my bank card- this did happen to one girl on our trip! The house has everything you need in it, the chef doesn't cook on Friday night or Saturdays but there is always either left overs or, like we did, go out to eat! All the local restaurants were a reasonable price and good food. Also just a heads up because we weren't told this but, if you are departing on a Sunday rather than a Saturday you have to pay $80 for the extra night! Apart from that it was a really great trip and I made some great friends as well. xxx
The best experience in my lifetime
Good experience
Choose a department you won't get bored of, and it will be great
Gap Medics is a fantastic way to be introduced into the world of medicine.
Last summer I visited their programme in Tanzania; the experience I had whilst there for two weeks was immeasurably valuable and I learnt a lot from both of my very friendly and informative mentors. In fact it was so good that during the February half term I went to their Polish programme which was just as incredible as the experiences I had in Tanzania. I spent an amazing week in the Neurosurgery department of the MSW Warsaw Hospital which gave me a very interesting insight into the profession. The placement coordinators were all exceedingly friendly and the programme head Agata was always ready and willing to help. Overall my time with Gap Medics in both Tanzania and Warsaw was absolutely invaluable and I doubt that I'll ever forget them.
Unforgettable experience!
The one week I spent doing a placement in general medicine in Clinica Canela was amazing! I absolutely loved every second of it from going around the different hospitals and wards, to the eye-opening surgeries e.g Caesarean section, circumcisions, maxillofacial surgeries. One of my most enjoyable weeks ever, the doctors were so lovely and helpful, the Gap Medics team and students were amazing too! La Romana was amazing, the city and culture was so unique, it made me want to learn Spanish so much, everyone was so welcoming! I would definitely recommend Gap medics to anyone who's considering doing international hospital work experience, and I would definitely go on another placement with Gap Medics again because it made me even more passionate to study medicine.
Life Changing - Phitsanulok Thailand 2 week placement - My second gap medics trip
January this year I travelled to Thailand for my second gap medics trip. In 2013, I travelled to Tanzania and I absolutely loved every second. I decided last year I wanted to do another trip with the company. It didn't disappoint! If you are on the fence, take the leap and do it! You won't regret it. Travelling solo can be a little daunting and can make you feel very anxious but I assure you, you will not be alone! So many others across the world will be travelling to do the same and feeling the same way. Phitsanulok is a beautiful place and not touristy at all - which is fantastic. My only advice would be to take a little hand sanitiser and toilet paper/tissue paper for when you go to the hospital (no toilet paper available and the little hand sanitisers are super handy).
Bring a lot of enthusiasm and really try and make the most of your placement - there was a slight language barrier but that is to be expected. Brush up on your Thai before hand and ask lots of questions. I think 2 weeks was just the right amount of time, but I always find it hard to say goodbye! The staff in Thailand are incredible - they will make sure everything is okay and will make you feel very safe. You will also make life long friends from all over the world - just do it!
Warsaw - Poland, Amazing Experience
I was a little nervous heading over due to the high cost and a few of the negative reviews I had read from other programs, though I don't think those applied to the program in Poland as it was a truly amazing experience!
I went on the 2-week medicine program in Poland, all the surgeons and gapmedics staff were super helpful! Although the patients I encountered did not speak English, the doctors kept us updated all through patient check-ups and even during the surgeries.
The opportunity to observe so many surgeries was invaluable and the experience has definitely helped me in my decision to pursue a career as a surgeon. The experience gave me a proper perspective on the reality of the daily life of surgeons, giving me a realistic view as to what such a career may involve.
Everyone I met was super friendly and happy to help me with any questions of issues I had throughout my stay, from the hospital, to the gapmedics house to the taxi driver (shoutout to Tomek!) the people really made the experience one of a kind.
Even though I visited during the European winter, I loved every second of it! The snow made everything look amazing and the cold was more bearable than I had imagined. I'm honestly glad I decided to visit in winter rather than summer.
Though the costs are high, if you can afford to go on this program I would recommend gapmedics, it was definitely worth it!
Amazing experience
I have no hesitation in recommending this program to anyone and everyone, despite your future profession. To simply experience another country's culture and see what their healthcare system is like is a valuable lesson for all healthcare professionals as well as an accountant, a school teacher or a lawyer.
Gap Medics changed my life
I applied fo gap medics during my gap year to give me a taste of what healthcare was like in another country prior to my application to medicine. Not only was the Dominican Republic a beautiful country but Chantal & her team out there were amazing. I've never been so looked after & experienced the amazing things I did there. I saw c-sections, natural births, hysterectomies, accompanied doctors on ward rounds - the list is endless! Every single mentor I had made it their business to get us involved in everything they did which was the best & something I couldn't get in my own country (UK has strict rules on what work experience students can do or see). I would do this programme again & again & again - not to mention i spoke about it at all my medical school interviews & it really impressed them. I now have a place to study Medicine - I hope I am like the doctors that I saw in the dominican republic & hope to return one day (fluent in spanish!!)
Incredible La Romana Placement
This trip went above and beyond my expectations in terms of hospitality, education, and enjoyment! I met some of the most incredible people and have made lifelong friends from my time in th Dominican Republic. So many worthwhile life experiences are to be had on a trip with Gap Medics, and I would highly recommend this trip to anyone considering a career in medicine!
Dentistry in Dominican Republic
At first I was skeptical about signing up with Gap Medics because I've never heard about it or didn't know anyone who had been a part of the program before; however, I am so glad that I did a placement with them. Even though I was in Dominican Republic for only a week, I had an amazing trip and met so many wonderful people. I had the opportunity to work with dentists both in a clinical and community setting. I wistnessed several procedures that would be impossible to see in the US and learned how to sterilize instruments. I did not want my experience to end. If I could, I would have stayed for who knows how long maybe even moved there. I am truly grateful for the memories that were made.
An incredible experience
The 3 weeks that I spent in Warsaw were unforgettable. My time on placement gave me a great perspective on several different aspects of hospital life under the caring and highly passionate mentors. This helped to solidify my goal to one day pursue this profession and coming to this decision so early one is a irreplaceable benefit. As well as this I also had the opportunity to explore the wonderful city and meet a great group of like minded friends all while being supported by the helpful staff. I highly recommend this program.
Loved it
I absolutely loved my 2-week Gap Medics experience in the Dominican Republic this January! I was able to gain valuable first-hand experience in community health as well as obstetrics/gynaecology, which confirmed my interest in medicine and I know I will never forget. Everybody just clicked and I was sad to leave. A wonderful program which I definitely recommend to anyone with an interest in healthcare.
Make sure you pay in british pounds!!
My 2 week nursing placement with Gap Medics in the DR was fabulous! I learned more than I ever thought on my placements, and my mentors were beyond amazing! They really care about you and want you to get the most out of your experience. After my trip to the DR, I signed up to go on a placement to Croatia and figured out that they seperately price out trips based on currency, WITHOUT PAYING ATTENTION TO THE EXCHANGE RATES. So everyone is paying drastically different amounts. My two week trip to croatia costed 1700 pounds which is about $2100 and when I asked how much it was in dollars, they said it would cost me $3500 if I paid in dollars. That is a $1400 difference! Unfortunantely I did not realize this before my trip to the DR, so I paid in dollars and could've save a lot of money. The trips are so worth it if you can get past the student experience team and all of the money BS. They try to nickel and dime you whenever possible stating "company policy".
