Global Pre-Meds
If you are looking for an experience to know if you want to be in the medical field this program is for you! I was able to see surgeries, IV’s, consultations with patients, ultrasounds, and we even had small training sessions in the hospital such as learning how to measure blood pressure, how to put in catheters, how to do blood draws, how to start an IV, and leaning to put on a cast. The mentor that I was assigned with was so much fun to be around and she explained everything when we couldn’t understand, made sure we could see everything during surgeries, as well as asking if we had any questions or if we had anything to ask the patients. If you are on the fence about applying to the program do not hesitate to apply. You will never have the same opportunity twice!
Dominican Republic Hospital Doctor Shadowing Experience
I participated in Global Pre-Meds' Hospital Doctor Shadowing Experience in the Dominican Republic during the summer of 2021, and I can confidently say that it was truly an amazing experience. Although the program took place during the COVID-19 pandemic, I was still able to enjoy the full experience of shadowing medical professionals at a public Dominican hospital and socializing with other group members at the house. My mentor, Dr. Leo, was very knowledgeable in emergency medicine (the area I shadowed in) and always explained all the procedures/medications very thoroughly. I got to see patients getting treated in the ER, surgeries in the OR (Gallbladder Removal, etc.), and learned many basic medical skills through hands-on training. Some of these skills included taking blood pressure manually, creating casts on the arms and legs, and learning/practicing more than 5 different types of sutures. During the surgeries, I was allowed to see the surgeons operating up-close and see what the various inner parts of the human body looked like in real life (a little different from what you would expect after seeing diagrams in textbooks). In the ER, the fast-paced environment of nurses/doctors treating emergencies was always very intriguing and I witnessed all sorts of cases, ranging from motorcycle accident victims to kidney stone patients. Personally, the most interesting aspect of the ER was being able to see what medicines were being used and how they were administered. Dr. Leo always took the time to explain the uses and cautions of each medicine/solution we encountered, and I learned the names/functions of quite a few commonly-used medicines in the ER. During my two week stay, I was provided with new PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) every day for the hospital shadowing and the house staff always made sure that I had fresh medical scrubs for each visit as well. I was with my bubble (for COVID prevention and safety) at all times, and I always felt safe in and around the hospital. As for the activities at the Global Pre-Meds house, we had so many fun activities to do together such as garden soccer, trivia/movie nights, pool volleyball tournaments, etc. During the week, we also had the option of going to the beach every afternoon and relaxing in the waves. The Global Pre-Meds house itself was very large and consisted of multiple separate rooms for different bubbles, outdoor dining areas, a living room with a TV and couches, a spacious pool with a hot tub, and an outdoor lounging area. The house itself was located in a private gated community and I felt completely safe and secure at all times during the trip. The Sanoa Island Catamaran Trip was arguably the most memorable experience of the entire trip and the scenery at the island was absolutely gorgeous. We also got to go snorkeling in the water and enjoyed some bachata dancing. Last but not least, the Global Pre-Meds staff were very friendly and kind to each and every one of us, and they were truly a key part of what made the program so awesome. Megan and Arnaud (A.K) were the two staff members who I saw the most and they were always making sure that we were enjoying our experience. Mrs. Alicia (photographer/doctor) always helped answer any questions we had concerning our shadowing, and Chantal (Regional Director) was always there to make sure every aspect of the program ran smoothly. The Global Pre-Meds Hospital Doctor Shadowing Program was truly a unique, one-of-a-kind experience in terms of the in-person experiences I had at the hospital and the memories I made with my fellow group members. The program really opened my eyes to the healthcare systems and practice of other countries such as the Dominican Republic, and I got to shadow doctors in a way that not many high schoolers would be able to in the US. I would recommend this program to any other students aspiring to join the medical field in the future as it is truly a wonderful and unique experience.
Global Pre-Meds 2021
I was able to shadow during COVID, and even with all the restrictions to keep us safe this program is completely worth it. Here you gain an experience that is like no other, you leave this program with a much different mindset on healthcare. The social experience is also what makes this program so great, you’ll meet students and staff that literally make you feel like family. It honestly is one of the best two weeks of your life! I know you may feel a little nervous or worried about the program due to it being so pricey, you may ask yourself several times if it’s a scam or actually worth it but trust me when I say it’s worth it.
Amazing Experience
I had a great time on the Dominican Republic trip through global pre-meds. It really helped me realize how much I love medicine. I got to see so many incredible things at the hospital including surgeries, ultrasounds, and consults. A lot of these experiences wouldn't be accessible to someone my age in the United States, but were extremely helpful in helping me understand how medicine works and what type of medicine I enjoy. I was also able to meet some amazing people and make friends from around the world. Additionally, the staff were all super nice, and I felt extremely comfortable, safe, and understood throughout my stay. The Dominican Republic itself was absolutely beautiful, and it was so fun getting to experience a different culture. This is definitely a once in a life time experience that I would recommend to anyone interested in exploring medicine.
Had an amazing experience!
Had an amazing experience! Would definitely recommend this to anybody interested in the medical field!
INCREDIBLE
I’ve done this program twice I went to Croatia and Dominican Republic. You get see and learn things the you would never get to see in the US. You get watch and learn from incredible doctors. Not only that but you get meet and connect with other students that might be on the same path as you, Med school, nursing school, PA school, etc. you can relate to these students and learn from them too. You make lifelong friends and memories that you will never forget. This company does everything they can to make sure you have an amazing experience inside the hospital and out.
Once In A Lifetime Experience
Not only did I shadow physicians of different specialties and learned quite a lot in the process, I’ve also made lifelong friends in two weeks! Everything from the house, the staff, the placement, and social environment are absolutely amazing! I strongly encourage all pre-meds to participate!
Amazing Global Pre-Meds Experience
Thanks to Global Pre-Meds I was able to shadow physicians in the Emergency Medicine department at Hospital Doctor Arístides Fiallo Cabral. It was an extremely eye-opening couple of days. We were confronted with an array of cases ranging from something as simple as a bruised leg to something as complicated as Pulmonary Edema! There is always something happening in the ER! Discussions were held about the pathway to becoming a doctor in DR, how their healthcare system differs from the US, common diseases in the area and numerous other topics. Besides this, the program did a phenomenal job at giving us students a well-deserved break. Many times as Pre-Meds we halt ourselves from taking a moment to relax given how fast paced our daily routines are. Global Pre-Meds provided medical exposure as well as moments to sit by the pool or go for a swim at the beach! One of my favorite parts was connecting with Pre-Meds from all over the world and seeing where each of them are on their journey. I met students about to begin college, in undergrad, in a gap year and about to start medical school! Someone even received their MCAT score during the trip (yes she killed it and we all screamed)! I will never forget this experience!
My Global Pre-Med experience
The time in the hospital and at the Global Pre-med house is a time you will never forget! The staff and other students who were shadowing are amazing. When I first got to the Global Pre-Med house I was nervous about making friends and enjoying the experience, but by the time I left I did not want to go back home! The connections you build with the people there will last forever. I would recommend this promgram for anybody who wants insight on healthcare overseas and wants a eye opening experience on life in another country.
Amazing shadowing work experience in Croatia with globalpremeds ^^^
My shadowing-a-doctor experience in Croatia was unforgettable! Someone could ask, why was my experience unique? Well, globalpremeds gave me a real insight into the life of both a vascular surgeon and a Transfusion med doctor; this experience broadened my horizons and enriched my knowledge of medicine, considering both the hard work carried on in a lab and the team-oriented work environment and challenges witnessed in the OR. Plus, this experience helped me strengthen my personal statement for UCAS and build lifelong friendships!!!!!
P.s. Shoutout to the team at the house!!! They're absolutely incredible and are like my second family now!!!
If you want to have the summer or work experience of your life, you definitely need to book a place with globalpremeds!!! I promise you you won't regret it!!!:)
Definitely Recommend
I went to the Dominican Republic through Global Pre Meds, summer of 2019. Global Pre Meds was such a great experience. I got to see things so up close and the mentors/staff were so kind and helpful. If you want to pursue a career in the medical field I definitely recommend this program! You won’t get this kind of experience anywhere else.
once in a lifetime experience
This programme changed my whole view on medicine. From a very young age I knew it was a probable career path for me, but this trip is the one that made me 100% sure of my decision to go into university for medicine. I got to view a different health care system from my country's and I saw the many differences , but also similarities with which doctors tackles patient issues with the little resources available to them. If that wasn't enough, every afternoon, whether you chose to stay at the house or go out to the programmed excursion of the day was an absolute blast. I would definitely do it all over again if I had the chance.
GLOBAL PRE-MEDS OVER EVERYTHING
Being within the Global Pre-Meds placement was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had in my life!! Having the opportunity to see how health care works in another country, while getting to know a bunch of different amazing people around the world is life changing. I did the 2 week placement in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic and within that time, I grew so close to the other students I was with. It honestly felt like a little family by the end of our stay. Anyone looking to gain some medical experience while enjoying the beauties of other countries Global Pre-Meds is your answer!! Amazing staff, amazing peers and overall an amazing time.
Absolutely life changing
Absolutely life changing! I went last year for two weeks, and the trip was amazing. From standing in an OR all day long to beach trips, the program was extremely well balanced and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to go. -Hannah Sher
My experience at Global Pre-Meds was…
My experience at Global Pre-Meds was amazing. All - from team to accommodation, from hospital staff to leisure activities - was well organised. And, the most important thing, I have seen the whole medical system of foreign country, gained so much useful information which could be applied here in my studies. Thank you very much, I definitely recommend it for all students. Modesta Ralyte
Fabulous experience
Fabulous experience. I went to Croatia in July 2019 as a student doing work experience in a hospital. They have two possible hospitals for you to work in. The company was absolutely amazing in sorting out all the placements for the students. I stayed a week and was shadowing in orthopaedic and trauma and saw countless surgeries that you can’t get access to watch as a student to watch in the UK. A friend of mine went to and was in vascular surgeries. If watching surgeries don’t appeal to you I know they do placements in laboratories and radiology and you can specify where you would like to go. As I went in summer the people in charge arranged lifts to and from the hospital because of the heat which I was very impressed with.
This experience would be an amazing insight to medicine. It is also useful in talking about in a personal statement and in interviews as you can highlight the similarities and differences between countries and cultures.
The rest of the experience in Croatia was also very lovely. Typically you start at a hospital early but finish by 2/3 o’clock so you have the rest of the afternoon and evening to go out and relax. So essentially you get a holiday as well as working. The facilities at the house were amazing with a great kitchen that was stocked if you fancy making anything as well as two pools and a spa room including a sauna and Hot tub. During the week on an evening a meal, pretty much a buffet of different food was provided which was stunning as a chef came in and made it and also he made banquet breakfasts throughout the whole week. I can’t tell you what some of the dishes actually were haha but they were delicious and my friend who is a vegetarian also enjoyed her options too so plenty of choice for everyone and leftovers for lunch the next day if you choose.
Being in this house with everyone made it easy to make friends from across the globe also interested in medicine, everyone was delightful and got a long well. There are countless activities such as not trips and cinema trips the friendly staff organised. But they were also very laid back in letting you do your own thing as we particularly enjoyed going to the beach and on the Wibit, which is basically an inflatable obstacle course on the sea, which was very fun.
My only regret from this experience was not doing another week or two as it was amazing and you typically swap department after a week. I do recommend orthopaedics or general if you would like to see many surgeries.
If you are looking for work experience and can’t get it where you are this is a great trip that gets you lots of shadowing opportunities and opportunities to ask questions to doctors as you have a mentor who is a doctor.
Just to mention as I know some would be wondering if it helped medicine applications I did get offers from several universities as did pretty much all the people I know from this trip.
Whilst a bit expensive it was totally worth it. 10/10. Better than any school trip I have been on.

The best 2 weeks!!!
The 2 weeks I spent in the Dominican with global pre meds last year was the best 2 weeks of my life. All the staff at the house were lovely, always on hand if you needed anything and the food every night was super tasty! The medical experiences I had we’re incredible, being able to witness births, amputations, general surgery and so much more alongside knowledgable mentors taught me so much. My mentors were absolutely amazing and always willing to answer questions and push you to get the most out of your time there. I loved the additional learning opportunities such as the public health talks and Spanish lessons back at the house. Right from the first day I met so many amazing people from around the world that I’m still in regular contact with now! The evening and weekend activites, quad biking, the boat party (so so good), horse riding, roller skating, Santo Domingo city tour were fab. For the medical shadowing, experience of a beautiful country and just the new people you’ll meet, I honestly could not recommend global pre-meds any more!!! - Maia Cole
Most Memorable Two Weeks of my Life
This experience was hands-down the most amazing two weeks of my life. The experience of shadowing hospitals in a foreign country is so valuable because I learned how different the health care system is compared to what I am used to. More importantly, I got to experience first hand what my dream profession would be like through shadowing incredibly talented mentors, as well as getting a feel for working in a hospital environment. Not only did I learn about medical procedures, medical conditions, etc., but I also learned a lot about which future profession truly suits me. I also made life-long friends with awesome like-minded people on this trip, and I will never forget the memories we made together. Aside from our shadowing placements in the hospital, we had the opportunity to experience Dominican culture through fun activities and excursions such as trips to the beach, ATVs, and a sunset cruise. This trip was the perfect blend of a valuable, academic shadowing experience and a fun, cultural immersion with amazing people.
My experience with Global Pre-Meds
My name is Lizeth Magana I am a nursing student and I completed the induction program on August 2019 in the Dominican Republic. Being a part of Global Pre-Meds has been one of the greatest adventures, I enjoyed every second of my experience. I loved making new friends from all of over the world and being able to share the amazing experience with them and make unforgettable memories. I completed my shadowing hours in the emergency room of the Hospital Dr. Dario Contreras, the biggest trauma hospital in the Dominican Republic, where I was mentored by Dr. Yannety De Aza. I learned so much from my mentor and was able to witness critical situations that I would have never seen anywhere else. I would definitely recommend Global Pre-Meds to anyone that is interested in the healthcare field.
I had an amazing two weeks there and…
I had an amazing two weeks there and would recommend this experience to anyone who is unsure if they are ready to go to medical school. The doctors that you shadow are very informative and do their best that each student gets to see various procedures in the hospital as well as targeting each area of interest. A couple things they could improve on is having an itinerary of what the two weeks will look like, sending price lists of various activities that you can do in the afternoon and having the La Romana staff contact students prior to arrival instead of at arrival. Other than that, the hands-on experience is something that is crucial in medicine and the ability to ask the doctors about each step is something that I loved most about the program.
