Victimisation and retaliatory conduct

I had a deeply concerning experience with Zego following a complaint that was upheld via the Financial Ombudsman Service.

After the FOS outcome was accepted, my monthly premium increased sharply from £285.42 to £475.99 with no meaningful explanation. Shortly afterwards, I was informed that Zego would no longer insure my vehicle at all, again without any substantive underwriting reasons being provided.

What makes this particularly troubling is that Zego had continued to insure me after the accident in question and only took these adverse steps after I exercised my right to complain and pursue regulatory redress. The timing strongly suggests retaliatory treatment rather than a genuine reassessment of risk.

This left me facing significant financial and practical difficulties, including the stress of suddenly needing to secure alternative insurance and the uncertainty caused by unexplained decisions that directly affected my ability to work and travel lawfully.

In my view, this conduct falls well below what consumers should expect from an insurer, particularly in terms of fairness, transparency, and treatment of customers who raise complaints. I would strongly caution others to consider how complaints are handled and what happens after an insurer is challenged.
