Great claims experince pay out on my free insurance policy and extended to a full policy with ease. Well worth it.
When I joined Petcover (Petplan) 5 years ago the rates seemed reasonable. My German Shep X had a TPLO 4 years ago and everything was covered except the excess and I had a really good experience.
When I joined up in April 2020 my premium was $115 Now in 2025 its $226/month.
When my dog did his other leg this year, I learned about the 20% owner ago contribution, which will continue to go up as he ages.
This experience has been very different too, with taking days or weeks for claims to be acknowledged, and then wanting vet letters, and then waiting more days and weeks. The service has definitely changed, and I wonder if I should continue, or put the money away $2700 per year.
If I could give less than one star, I would. Worst pet insurance ever. Will never use them again, nor will I ever recommend them to a friend.
They are expensive, you can not claim at the vet, claims are lodge manually. Many procedures are non claimable, they have no compassion. The list goes on.
I have cancelled my policy after being with Petcover (originally Petplan) for over 8 years.
They increased the cover price by 47% and the excess by $25. They also take an extra 20% off once your dog is over 8 years. There is no loyalty with this company.
They are extremely difficult to deal with when you put a claim in and always request additional information from the vet to try to get out of paying the claim.
I would have given a 0 star rating if I could.
Don’t go with this company as there are better options available now.
My experience with Petcover forced me to cancel my insurance for two dogs.
For starters, it took Petcover two weeks to even acknowledge my claim. On top of that, I was not paid in full. They're claiming that they "processed" some receipts, but they never paid them. I'm left short. Simple maths would tell anyone that I'm right but it seems to be too much to grasp.
I escalated this issue to their internal dispute resolution team. The investigation was clearly done without any deep understanding of the situation and without explanation of what went wrong.
During that time, they diligently took my money and sent me a renewal quote. Taking money from customers seems to be the priority.
Emails sent to them seem to land in a blackhole somewhere, taking weeks to respond. Calling them never results in anything useful other than "we'll get back to you" and having to wait for weeks.
Insurance matters when you need to claim, not when you want to pay. In this case, it's clear that settling claims is not something Petcover are good at.
My puppy came with a complimentary 6-week Petcover policy arranged by the breeder. I tried to contact Petcover to clarify what was actually covered and to seek pre-approval for a potential claim. Despite multiple attempts—emails and calls—I received no proper response.
They did eventually call me, but only to try to get me to extend the policy. During the call, they admitted they’d received my email and promised to follow up. Nothing ever came of it.
This kind of service is unacceptable, especially when it involves the health and well-being of a pet. I would never rely on Petcover and would strongly advise others to look elsewhere.
I have two dogs insured with Pet cover.
Dog A required emergency diagnostics - the claim took 5 plus weeks to resolve and i feel wouldn't be if i hadn't become proactive in contacting them which was made difficult by their refusal to respond to emails and long waits for phone calls.
Recently my second dog dislocated a toe and required diagnositcs and physio which after being a "supreme" member for five years entitles me to. I placed my claim 4 weeks ago, still waiing. Their problem? The Vet physio did not itemise her bill - she considers physiotheapy to be all enclusive as a listed service with the price. Obviously they want to try to find something that they do not cover so they can give me less money. Yes they have the notes from the visit so they can see what was done. When they were Pet Plan they were great... now they are terrible. Go somewhere else. RUN!
I just received an email from this company thanking me for choosing them, and with a mass of attachments about my policy etc. I know nothing about them and have not asked for their policy details, much less signed up with them. However it had all my details, which is concerning. They did get one very important fact wrong though; I have a kitten and they are insuring me for a cockatoo!!!
This company is terrible! Had pet insurance with them since I had my dog, paid for years with no claim, missed one vet check up as the vet didn’t send reminder so I didn’t realise how long it has been and then my dog accidentally breaks his tooth on a bone and they won’t cover it. He is a young healthy dog and they clearly will do anything to get out of paying a claim. I had recommended them before but now suggest they are avoided and you go to someone who actually wants you to be able to use the cover you pay for.
Great handled my claims with 3 days and paid my vet direct.
This company is a complete scam. They will do anything to get out of paying a claim. We have had our pets insured with Petcover (formerly Petplan) for years. They have gotten progressively worse in paying claims and heavily increased their prices over the years. We have now cancelled all our policies after Petcover refused an pay anything towards a claim. I would not recommend Petcover to anyone and would suggest that if you are currently insured with them cancel your policy.
I have my two dogs insured with PetCover and have since birth - they are now 9 and 12. I estimate that I have spent over $25,000 on insurance throughout this time (conservatively).
I am now spending $350 a month on insurance for my two dogs. They hit you with an age excess on top of the normal excess once they are deemed elderly, so the % of the cost you can claim drops dramatically.
I made a claim for my 9 year old dog as he had to have teeth removed on 23/7/24. It took countless follow up emails and calls to finally be told on 20/8/24 the claim had been declined. Conveniently during this time, Thomas' policy was due for renewal and jumped up in price. They declined the claim as he hadn't had his teeth checked in the last 12 months. While that may be deemed reasonable, it wasn't a normal dental clean, he required surgery. I have now sent numerous emails and phone calls asking for this case to be reconsidered and escalated, and keep being told it has been sent to the case manager. Nearly 3 weeks later and I have had NO real communication.
This experience has been costly and incredibly stressful. Petcover's processes do not support the customer experience. Either their staff are inundated with claims and they are understaffed, or they are lacking the clear processes on how to escalate claim disputes.
I am now moving on to lodge a complaint with the Australian Financial Complaints Authority if I don't hear back this week, and considering cancelling my insurance all together and simply saving the $350 a month to cover costs. What is the point in expensive insurance if you cant make a claim?
Weasel out of any claim. What should be straight forward becomes a policy exclusion.
Just go with someone else, these people will just take your money.
Illness under Pet Cover Terms & Conditions means "any unhealthy state, condition, ailment, affliction,
sickness, disease, disorder, defect, syndrome or abnormality that causes pain dysfunction or distress and that is not due to an external Injury"; yet when they decide whether to pay out a claim they decide on the basis of what kind of treatment has been done and whether it could also be for preventive treatment. Example: extreme gingivitis in a just 12months old cat requiring treatment was turned down as considered "preventive" to losing teeth; even tooth extraction is not covered per se but "may be considered". They will try and weasel out of paying for anything!
We bought a puppy where the puppy breeders had already taken out a policy with Petcover - they told us it was a deal they did where the insurance rolled on for six weeks after we adopted - presumably Petcover hope people will continue insuring with them after the six weeks is up.
Except, hidden in the Petcover small print, the insurance doesnt count for the first seven days you have the dog - obviously the time you need it most.
We actually paid the $3,500 vet bill on the eighth day, but Petcover still isn't paying, because, apparently, our dog had 'pre-existing conditions' (ie she was sick) on the sixth day.
Please don't use this company.
They took money from the breeder of our dog to insure our pet and when it came to making good on their responsibilities they did everything possible to get out of paying for our dog’s life threatening care.
This obviously is the nightmare scenario for anyone who buys any sort of insurance.
And if you buy a puppy and the breeder tells you that you have this sort of temporary insurance with Petcover then IMMEDIATELY insure with someone else, as our experience suggests Petcover are likely to try any argument available to them to avoid paying if you have a problem.
So, our $3,500, which we gladly paid to save our dog, will now stay in Petcover’s corporate bottom line, instead of being spent on our children.
It's a win for the fat cat company, and a loss for an Australian family.
Maybe this is a one off and they're fine on other claims.
Or maybe it's a really bad sign that when you make a claim they virtually immediately come back at you to say that, actually, we've found a loophole to avoid paying you.
Either way, my advice, based on our experience of this company, would be to CHOOSE ANY OTHER INSURER THAN THIS ONE.
NO GAP ONLY, NO PRE APPROVALS GIVEN, PETCOVERS PAY DIRECT TO VET IS USELESS, CLAIMS DENIED
1. No Gap Only – Search “ASIC Stop Order Pet Insurance” & GapOnly. Petcover have confirmed they do not do Gaponly unlike most other insurance providers. Best to go with another provider because you’ll never be required to pay any upfront costs if your vet is one of Gaponly insurance partners. You can claim on the spot and only pay your excess. With Petvcover, you’ll always be required to pay upfront for the total cost.
2. No Pre Approvals Given – Petcover does not provide any pre approvals. Again, most other insurance providers do give pre approvals.
3. Pay Direct To Vet Option – This is useless. If no pre approval is given, how can anyone use this option? Are vets supposed to do the surgery with no pre approval from Petcover and just hope when the claim is submitted, they will be paid?
BOAS SURGERY DENIED DUE TO DOG PREVIOUSLY ONLY HAVING KENNEL COUGH
Pets cover started January 2019 (3 months of age).
April 2019 pet was seen by vet for kennel cough.
Petcover paid all April 2019 claims in full.
Since April 2019, pug has had no vet visits for anything in relation to coughing.
Only last month, pug started having breathing difficulties and vet has recommended BOAS.
Petcover advised they would not pay any expenses for said pet.
Their Reason - Pet showed “clinical signs” of BOAS in Apr 2019 (which was actually deemed to be kennel cough ONLY). Petcover does have a 365 day waiting period on BOAS. The vet did recommend at the time for the pets airways to be assessed ONLY IF the cough was did not stop. Cough immediately stopped after vet visits and no further treatment was necessary.
Just because someone shows signs of a cough, it doesn’t deem them to have “clinical signs of Lung Cancer”. It was only a cough.
From my experience, best to go with another insurance provider who is a Gaponly partner (no more upfront costs), provides pre approvals and don't deny claims because they deem your pet to have shown clinical symptoms based on an unrelated issue that happened 4 years ago!
Formal complaints with various Government bodies have been lodged.
BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY. I HAVE BEEN WITH THEM FOR MANY YEARS NOW BUT RECENTLY THEY HAVE STARTED TAKING PAYMENTS RANDOMLY FROM MY BANK ACCOUNT. AT THE MOMENT THEY OWE ME HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS IN OVER PAYMENT.
I HAVE PHONED AND EMAILED THEM BUT HAVE NOT GOT A REPLY. PAYMENTS FOR MY CATS ARE COMING OUT FORTNIGHTLY INSTEAD OF MONTHLY. EITHER THEIR COMPUTER SYSTEM HAS GONE BESERK OR THEY ARE DOING DAYLIGHT ROBBERY.
DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY!
I want to name and shame Pet Cover. I have paid them an absolute fortune over the years in pet insurance and I never make any claims. Every year when it renews, it also goes up by about $50 per dog, per month. I have three dogs, I don't know how anyone is expected to afford this. I did try to make a claim for my pug who had to have a tumour removed last week but it was declined because it's excluded. I have no idea why - she's never had one before. Furthermore, if pugs are predisposed to having small tumours, excluding them from the insurance I am paying for is similar to excluding gynae from health insurance for women on the basis that they'll need it. I'm absolutely appalled. Should we leave the tumour and she can get really sick with cancer? Wouldn't I then need to claim more for other things anyway? What is the point of paying all that money for insurance?
They used to be great when they were PetPlan. Now under new ownership they try to rip you off and do whatever it takes not to pay out.
After my dog passed away, they want to charge me the rest of the year's remaining balance (11months!) off the claim! No other insurance that I deal with does this - car, house, contents ... they all refund you back unused portion for whatever reason.
PetCover is a disgusting company that takes advantage of pet owners in their time of grief. Do yourself a favour and find another alternative.
