I'm convinced that the corporate sadists at Amtrak, or as I like to say, Asstrak, actively pump stale hot piss smell throughout the train cars just because they can.

Terrible, learn from other train systems around the world.

Terrible, they need to learn from other train systems around the world. 99% of the time the passengers aren't aware of which side of the track the train will arrive on, prompting to have an in-person worker to physically tell people.

Train is constantly late, almost as if train conductors don't even know if there's a delay. Imagine taking this train on an important trip.

Website is a bust, user experience is incredibly broken while booking. Sad attempt at creating an intuitive transit system in the US. Do better.

Amtrak’s pet policies stink

Amtrak’s pet policies stink. I was hoping to visit family for Christmas as I have had to relocate across the country and I am unable to make the drive due to the weather conditions during this time of year. I have a 45lbs dog who apparently is too big to travel with me on any form of transportation. She is cleanly and I make great efforts to ensure she is not annoying or a nuisance to the public yet I can’t travel ANYWHERE with her. I am devastated that I will be spending Christmas alone and away from all my loved ones due to no public transportation forms allowing pets over 20lbs. You would think there would at least be one. Amtrak, please reconsider. If someone would like to purchase a bedroom cart to seclude their animal from bothering the public, have them pay extra for coverings to protect furniture or for a cleaning fee, and why the 20lbs? Let us purchase an extra seat ticket so a dog in a crate that is over 20lbs can fit. Please.

10/01/24- San Antonio to NOLA HELL RIDE

10/01/24- San Antonio to NOLA. Apparently, there are folks who ride for days to a week who don't bathe. The train reeked of human stench. People were eating, sleeping, passing gas for 15 hours. A man had a medical emergency and lost bowel control, and no one cleaned it up for 6 hours. Picture guys standing up to urinate on a swaying train. Yes, urine on everything.
The staff were kind. The conductor handled the guy's emergency extremely well, especially considering the girlfriend was holding his leg, screeching that they had no money because they had hooked up on Facebook and were riding the train to LA.
This will make you an avowed misanthrope.
Do not recommend.

Filth stench misery
Preferred solution: Save others From this madness
User's recommendation: Stay away from this *Hell** Ride

Terrible refund policies

We traveled from Denver to Princeton IL on Sept 11 / 12 , 2024. We booked a roomette because we wanted privacy and comfort. Part way into the trip (middle of the night) the train car smelled like a sewer. They were unable to fix this problem. We along with everyone else in that car, spent the remainder of our trip in the observation car having neither privacy or comfort. When we returned home we contacted Amtrak. This was slightly over $1000 ticket. They offered us a $400 voucher good for one year ( our last train trip was 12 years ago a good trip and why we decided to go again) or $200 cash. We tried to get a report so that our credit card company could help us out but they refused to give us a report. They claim this is fair amount. it is not even the difference between coach and a roomette. They might get you where you want to go but forget about compensating you fairly. I understand things happen but if you want a good reputation you stand behind your company and make it right.

OMG...where do I begin?

OMG...where do I begin?
The train ride to Ft Worth from OKC was great. The conductor was very charismatic!! Loved him!!
The return ride back is where EVERYTHING went wrong!!!
We were put on a BUS from Fort Worth to Gainesville...the WORST ride ever!! No explanation as to why a bus and not the train. We board the train, anxious to leave and sat on the track for over 30 minutes waiting on "paperwork"! My elderly parents are scheduled to pick me up in OKC and I DO NOT have an updated time to give them. Learn to provide the courtesy of clear communication. At this point I do not know if I would use or recommend this mode of transportation!! We have been traveling for about 10 minutes and this conductor has clearly forgotten how to communicate! Update...hours later and she (the conductor) has not addressed the delay at all. She made a brief stop (5-10 minutes) saying there was a technical issue, but it wasn't a big deal or serious... I have to ask, then why did we stop at all? The morning train set the bar too high for this crew!! Take the morning train to Fort Worth...it was a fun experience. But for the sake of peace, find an alternative for your return. No respect for my time nor my dime!!

Trip of a lifetime

I had the trip of a life time going to New Jersey from Richmond va and back.it was very clean, punctual, comfortable, the staff were very good to me having had a stroke,they were very helpful on and off the train both ways. On the way back the conductor Matthew Smith was excellent in his job,very friendly, helpful,funny,clean cut,and he made the ride back to Richmond va awesome. That my new transportation anywhere I deside to go. 5 stars to amtrack!!

We couldn’t go on our trip from Chicago…

We couldn’t go on our trip from Chicago on the California Zephyr then back to Chicago on the Southwest Chief due to a health issue. Amtrak would not refund ANY of our money or let us rebook. We were even willing to pay extra to rebook. We even had a drs note…didn’t matter. Terrible service. Things happen beyond a persons control.

Amtrak’s Union Station is terrible

Amtrak’s Union Station is terrible. Thought I’d get here early to get coffee. Not even a Starbucks! And no seating! Standing lines have replaced most of the seats. No wonder why all the shops and food stores are gone, no place to wait. A shame.

Observation Car Not Accessible to All Passengers

My husband and I took the Coast Starlight from Los Angeles to Seattle (36 hr journey). We booked a roomette and were told prior to boarding to go to our roomette & wait to speak with our car attendant prior to moving about the train. Unfortunately, 20 minutes later when we tried to find a seat in the observation car, there was none. The same people (mostly from coach) who took a seat in the observation car at the beginning of this trip, never left their seats. They "held" seats for others, put their luggage, food, etc. in the seats when they got up. We went through at least 7 times looking for a seat and they were always occupied by the same people. This car is meant to be for the enjoyment of everyone, not just a few. These selfish people even slept in the observation car instead of the coach seats they paid for. When we complained to the Amtrak conductor and other personnel, they did nothing except ask passengers to take their luggage to their seat in coach. What a joke! Just as they require a reservation time for the dining car, there needs to be a reservation time for the Observation car. Otherwise, bring back the parlor car with exclusive access for those who paid for the roomette/ bedroom.

Train staff, particularly dining and cafe car staff, are rude, disinterested, and sit around complaining about their jobs.
I’ll never take train trip more than 5 hours long.
Cars were old and dirty. AC did not work in my sleeper. This is what happens when

Never again

Never again. Now I understand why they are bankrupt. Unreliable. Constantly many hours late. Also, Booked a room 7 months ago only to have them change me to a smaller room without notice and would not change back.

Terrible experience even with a top…

Terrible experience even with a top upgrade. I went from Memphis to New Orleans. The attendant for the car said she could not help me with my bag. I needed things in there for the trip so had to pull it up the very narrow winding staircase. I had to go find her to see if I could get something to eat/drink. It was freezing cold in my room but the attendant told me she couldn’t do anything about it. I wrapped up in 2 blankets to survive. I decided to go get my breakfast myself just so I could get out of the ice locker! The floor to the snack area was so wet from humidity, I slipped and almost fell. It was like an ice rink. I had to carry my food tray on the slick floor back to my room and was scared to death of falling. So at lunchtime, I did not want to risk slipping so I had her bring me lunch—the water bottle fell on the floor because she would not hand it to me properly. The bathroom floor was also soaking wet so I slipped again in there. When leaving, again she said my bag was too heavy for her to help me so I had to pull it down the winding staircase ( I have 2 torn rotator cuffs). The train was pretty filthy. Thank goodness for clean towels so I could wipe things off and line the floor. I couldn’t wait to deboard so I could thaw out. Ice cold, dirty, and awful customer service! I dread getting back on the train to go home.

There was no one at the Cafe car for…

There was no one at the Cafe car for over 30 minutes we just got tired of waiting do we went to reserve a table for diner and they said they would announce it but guess what the speaker system in our car wasn't working.

I just called customer service to ask…

I just called customer service to ask about a strike in the Canadian railways. I called to inquire. The first person I spoke with had a horrible connection. I could barely hear her. The second call I made the agent was rude and had no idea what I was talking about. It would be nice to speak with someone who knows what's going on with our neighbouring countries.

The Amtrak server on the cafe car was extremely aggressive and tried to bully and body shame me out of no where it was
Extremely unprofessional and her behavior was disgusting and I have her picture and I want to make an official complaint.

First time and last time... and an appalling customer service!

First I booked a train ticket from NYC to Montreal and I got a mere 25% as a refund because the train stopped half way.
Then, the train was stranded for 1h30 in the middle of nowhere between NYC and Saratoga Springs.
As a consequence, I missed my coach to Montreal. The next one was full so the best option was to go to Albany and take another coach... I arrived in Montreal late at night and had to take a taxi.
To cut the story short, I arrived 6 hours later and spent three times the original amount paid. So I contacted the Amtrak customer service.
No response at all!
It's very disappointing on all levels.
I was so much looking forward to this train journey through the New York state and happy not to fly. 😒
