There are plenty of reasons for the thousands of negative reviews. The company throws up hurdles and barriers in order to use the gift card, including a non-working website. We spent 2-3 hours attempting to use the gift card, and were only successful due to a sympathetic and persistent store manager that made multiple calls to Vanilla customer service. Avoid Vanilla gift cards like Covid.

Do not purchase Vanilla Gift cards. In June 2026, I received a Vanilla Gift card as a gift. It had been loaded with $200.00. I inspected the card packaging before opening the sealed product and all margins of the package appeared intact with the original factory seal. However, when I opened the sealed card holder, it was apparent that the card inside had been tampered with. The last digits of the card number, the security code, and the serial number were all scratched off rendering the card useless. Vanilla Gift customer service limits the reporting of card problems to submitting an online form. No live customer service agents are accessible. Vanilla Gift customer service policy demands a copy of the purchase receipt before they will investigate reported problems with their gift cards. Because of the condition of the card and packaging, the card appeared to have been fraudulently tampered with during the manufacturing process.

This company is a scam
Never under any circumstances buy a gift card from this (or frankly any generic gift card) company. Their business model is to make it hard to use so people get frustrated and don't use 100% of the funds. The company a scam. Trying to redeem a card I found no customer service help, their website randomly crashes and fails to load (firefox browser, it worked better but still poorly after switching to chrome) they demand a ton of your information, and then the card just doesn't work. The cards make it difficult to just send the lump sum amount, because they hope on a 20$ card you'll spend 17$ then it'll be too inconvenient to use the remaining 3$, and so they get to steal your money.
We live in the 21st century if you want to give someone money you can give them cash, or venmo, or zelle, or paypal them, or the dozens of payment transfer services not trying to steal it for themselves. There is no reason to use these scammers in 2026 do not waste someone's time by giving them a gift card, especially not from this company.

Really horrible company. never recommend to buy these vanilla gift cards. you can't add them into your apple wallet not even able to use it online and when you call customer support they are horrible. keep you on hold for 30 mins and can't able to talk to supervisor and while talking to supervisor after calling again and waiting for 30 mins again to talk to supervisor if call gets disconnect no one calls you back means wasting 1 hour on the phone and don't get any solution. wastage of money and time both if purchasing this useless vanilla gift card

Confused, big time.
Tried for two hours earlier today. Rejected but was not told why. Just told to check with my bank. My bank is Merrill Lynch. They did not know why. Decided to call the number on the back of my Visa card. Helpful. Told me I was using the wrong CVR (?) number . I knew I wasn't but did notice when I entered the number I gave no indication that the number had been accepted bot that it had been rejected.

company needs to stop hiring cheap labor for customer service because they will go under. incredibly unhelpful agents who don’t really speak english well and will give you attitude for asking a simple question. their business is scammy and not efficient enough for people to tolerate sh1t customer service. these cards are practically useless and they used to work online but some terms probably changed that made them incompatible with 99% of online merchants. if you’re gonna gift somebody money just give them the money, pro tip

Absolutely HORRIFIC
Absolutely HORRIFIC. Attempted to place an order online for egift card FOR 3 WEEKS, 3 different cards, 500 excuses for why the transaction would not go through. Charged my card 4 times and posted the transactions, but VanillaVisa fraud appears to have blocked the order from going through so recipient never received. Had to open a case with my bank to get this resolved because customer support can only "Enter a ticket that takes up to 2 business days" and then they completely fail to communicate with you regarding resolution or next steps. THREE WEEKS this has been ongoing and finally I was told to go into a store where I have to pay additional activation fees and pay to physically mail the gift cards instead of sending an e-gift.
AVOID VANILLA VISA. They're a nightmare.
Edit: To add, they responded to the negative review quite quickly, but had no interest in supporting me through the 6+ hours of customer service support over the last 3 weeks aiming to resolve the issue. Never was a manager available to investigate further or escalate the tickets. I have no desire to correspond further, my bank has addressed the charges and I purchased $650 in e-gift cards seamlessly through giftcards.com - should have started there when I first had issues with vanilla.
