Owner Experience & User Experience
Owner Experience:
I ventured into Uber Car Share with some of my cars, including an older compact vehicle. Here's how my first customer's rental experience played out:
Duration: 5 days
Distance Covered: Approximately 582 kilometers
Customer Charges: $161.50 for time and $122.22 for distance (at 21 cents per kilometer)
Total Earnings: $283
However, it's essential to clarify that the Uber platform takes its share, which in this case amounted to $94. Yet, this doesn't imply that the remaining amount is all yours. After factoring in the fuel voucher refund, I was left with about $104.
Now, let's do the math. If I have my car booked for 200 days out of 365 days, I'd theoretically earn around $4000. However, it's important to consider that this amount must cover expenses such as Registration and Insurance (excluding additional costs like servicing and tire replacement). Furthermore, one must declare this income to the ATO and pay taxes, which significantly reduces the net income.
In my perspective, the deal with Uber appears biased against owners, especially considering the substantial investment required for equipment and its maintenance. Uber primarily offers the software and booking services, but the returns may not justify the owner's investment.
Insurance Observations:
When considering using your car for private purposes in addition to Uber Car Share, it's worth noting that some insurances cover car sharing, although at a slightly higher cost than regular insurance. Also, Uber's insurance covers rental drivers during the trip, but anything outside of the rental period falls under your personal insurance.
There is a higher insurance cover policy, but it has limitations on the number of kilometers per year. For instance, if you have a 4WD vehicle available for hire, Uber doesn't cover renters for off-road or beach usage. Even if they use your car for such trips and return it unscathed, Uber will not hold the renter accountable based on their GPS travel path. They will only intervene if there is damage during the trip.
This presents an intriguing scenario - you can rent a 4WD for a weekend off-road trip at a much cheaper rate through Uber, but this lack of protection can be a concern for owners.
User Experience - Car Hirer via Uber Car Share:
Experience 1:
I rented a BMW in Sydney from a friendly owner, but not without some hiccups. Upon arrival at the designated pickup location, the car wasn't there. After contacting the owner and conversing with Uber support, it appeared that the previous booking was meant to be completed but had been left with a mechanic due to a flat tire. A glitch in the Uber Car Share hiring software and the tracking devices showed two simultaneous locations of the car, which was unclear to both the car owner and the renter. This raises questions about Uber's ability to accurately track their cars.
Uber compensated me with $15 for the inconvenience, which might not seem very generous.
Experience 2:
I returned the car an hour later than my scheduled booking time. Due to a software glitch the return process could not be completed via the app. I was stranded in the car park, waiting for an hour, and only received the Pin code for the instant key lock after spending time on the phone with the call center. No compensation was provided for this inconvenience.
Experience 3:
As a driver, I received a traffic fine, something that can happen to any driver. However, Uber charged me a $40 owner inconvenience fee, in addition to the infringement fees and demerit points I incurred. It felt like a double hit on my finances.
Conclusion:
Based on my personal experiences, it seems that the deal with Uber Car Share is heavily skewed in Uber's favor. Unless Uber improves security, offers more equitable commission structures, and ensures better overall terms, it may not be a worthwhile venture for car owners.
I'm open to hearing the experiences and criticisms of other owners, and I encourage you to share your thoughts and feedback.
Denied applicants
They don't approve people very often. I don't like that there is a complicated approval process on top of already having to get a credit check and criminal background check...you also must do a check with Uber on what they class as a "good driver". My friend only had a parking ticket on his records and was refused upon application. Far to harsh. Other car loan places do not have this. Then when you are approved, they take every cent off you anyhow. Not worth it..read the comments and you realize why this business will soon fail
Stay away from here
Stay away from here. They lied to me. I paid the $150 deposit as required for first booking. They then refunded it to my Uber Carshare account. So I withdrew back to my bank account. It's been 2 days and it's still not here. First they claimed it'll show up in 24 - 48 hours. Now they claim 3-5 business days... and it's Friday today. You guys could have given a warning about that if there was I would have never deposited the $150 now I'm very low on cash until pay day thanks a lot.
No good, don't even bother
Uber Car Share USED to be ok when it was Car Next Door. Uber has managed to take a great, grass roots user platform and run it into the ground. I guess it's because it is competition to their ride'share' business.
It has taken them over 2 weeks to acknowledge receipt of items posted to them and when I call to get an update, there is no time frame given as to when someone can check with the relevant department. Rubbish.
Don't try it even if free
Others said it: stay well away! One very important thing to know: as a borrower, you are liable for the vehicle until it is used next, which could be weeks after you returned the car.
We returned the car where we found it on a day there was no time limit. The owner validated our return and marked the car as being parked correctly (owners receive pictures of where the car is parked and have GPS tracking). Yet 20 days later he received a parking fine and nominated us as 'driver' at the time. Low from him but Ubercarshare went with it and charged us $40 for 'owner inconvenience' on top of that.
It is not cheaper than renting a car, or in our case a Ute. We just liked the convinience of proximity, but it is not worth the risk of getting a fine or the car being damaged while parked outside and you being responsible for it weeks after returning it. I know, it is so ridiculous it doesn't sound true, yet it is.
NEVER EVER LEND YOUR CAR THROUGH UBER CARSHARE
f the borrower damages your car, you will be in deep trouble. For any mechanical or electrical damages to the car, UberCar share will simply put them as 'wear & tear' and will not cover. For any physical damage, oncee you have finally established it to be caused by the borrower, you will be in a long, lengthy and painful process to get it fixed. Not to forget, every time talking to a call centre offshore who have some patent words and sentences that will be repeated every time no matter whatever your situation is. Overall, the experience and the hassle is not worth it for the few extra peanuts (after Uber CarShare's deduction). So if you love your car, DO NOT lend it through Uber Carshare.
Awful service and will not accept liability for damage
Do not place your car on this platform. I had up to 4 vehicles listed and as soon as one of vehicles was damaged under their cover they denied liability and ended up paying out of my pocket. I withdrew all my vehicles from the platform and would never use them again.
If I could leave 0 stars I would.
If I could leave 0 stars I would.
Booked a vehicle, had it cancelled th eday before, booked again, had it cancelled th eday before.
If you are ok with not knowiong you have the vehicle until the day of hire they may be fine, if not, the local car hire company will be better.
Great concept, terrible application.
Do not use
Do not use, they are AWFUL in every aspect. Disgusting service.
Useless
Perfect credit, no traffic incidents, no criminal history, and with no reason, cancelled my application....After harvesting all of my ID information and photos of course, which I'm sure will be kept very safe >_>
Absolutely useless.
Nightmare
I have not had a fine in over 16 years. I have no criminal record and an excellent credit rating. Uber cancelled my account for no valid reason left me stranded when I was relying on the car share to get to my destination. It's very rude and I feel very insulted. Use Go Get they seem a lot more established and legit.
UBER STOLE MY MONEY
Uber car hire STOLE my money. I paid for a hire car Uber did not specify types of card they don't accept as deposit my Monzo which is accepted worldwide with double the amount of money on it Uber did not accept, they cancelled my booking and kept my £150 payment
Just don’t do it
Rented a car with them a month later endless emails and hours on hold with potentially the worst phone reception you’re likely to experience still trying to get paid. Just don’t do it
Avoid Renting Here
Avoid Renting Here! I had an absolutely terrible experience, and I strongly advise against renting from them. Instead, opt for a reputable and trustworthy renting company to save yourself both money and, more importantly, ensure your safety. The company prioritizes the interests of car owners over the well-being of their customers.
During my rental period, I received a car with a malfunctioning safety system, which ultimately led to the car breaking down. However, instead of taking responsibility, the company unfairly blamed me for the incident. It is baffling to know that they were already aware of the broken safety system before I rented the car, yet they chose not to address the problem.
Their customer provided me with incredibly unsafe advice, which was concerning and unprofessional.
What's even more concerning is that despite knowing about the safety issue, they continued to rent out the same car without fixing it. This lack of concern for their customers' safety is simply unacceptable and speaks volumes about their business practices.
In conclusion, I strongly urge everyone to steer clear of this car rental company. Their disregard for customer safety and the irresponsible way they handle their vehicles are reasons enough to seek an alternative and reputable car rental service. Don't put yourself at risk by choosing this company; there are plenty of other options out there that genuinely prioritize their customers' safety and satisfaction.
Absolute disgrace of a company
Absolute disgrace of a company
Keep you waiting weeks for results run by a bunch of puppets on strings
Amount of time and mental stress caused by the damage that their technicians created on my vehicle.
Impossible insurance to deal with! Covers you for very little!
My advice stay away.
Not Worth of trying
Not Worth of trying. Just trying to dig out your pocket money
Forcefully charging card multiple times
Uber carshare took over a decent company called car next door and made it ridiculously expensive with horrible service. I have had a recent experience where the owner of the car is asking me to pay for some scratches where most of them were from before my hire and many more were hidden under a sticker. Uber dragged me through the dispute resolution for 4 months, repeatedly changing the person handling my case and asking the same questions over and over again. After 4 months of no resolution, the matter was escalated to a senior member who finally provided a resolution BUT they activated an invoice for the full amount on my account. Now they keep charging me in small amounts every week to try to get the money. While I have asked 5 times to hold the invoice till a full resolution has been decided. Very horrible service. All the delays were on their end and now I am being told that invoice has to be created because its been a long time. I will use goget, borrow friends cars, even buy my own car before I even consider using this horrible money-hungry company’s service again.
Unethical company
Pretty much forced me to pay $1000 in charges for damage I never done, when I emailed they always just sent me a message pretty much saying I'm responsible and their is nothing I can do, first the charge was $500 which I refused to pay and then they just took out of my bank without my authorization (oh yes they can do that they say) and then said after inspecting it's $1000 and demanded another $500 threatening me with debt collectors. I will never use this company again, should be more in place to protect the renter from this. (But I'm sure they won't do that because they probably make.money on it). Looks cheap at first to rent a car but the price is always wrong (they gave me one price and then charged me 30% more when the cost came in) and with the cost per km it's expensive. It's cheaper to just rent from a reputable company. Would give 0 stars if possible.
My partner was just charged today a…
My partner was just charged today a "handling fee", which is described on their website in case there is an infringement. All good with that, but thing is, we have received no notice of this charge for a rental that was made in october last year, and the app doesn't even show the history previous to December 2022. Accessing the chat, it seems we won't have any information other than the invoice after payment was taken until the fine arrives to our house. After 1 hour on the chat, we finally managed for the person to send us the history of the rental. This is just ridiculous, as if I am to be charged any fee, even though it is on the rules I agreed for rental, I expect to receive a notice justifying it previous to the charge.
Very bad service. And he is expecting to receive the fine to then cross check with the information we spent an hour trying to retrieve.
Truly the worst experience
Truly the worst experience. LIke so many others before me, Uber debited my account thousands of dollars and would not refund even when the person at fault for the accident offered their insurance. I've spent months in correspondence with them and it has been traumatic. The customer service is evidently trained to never escalate the issue to "management" despite repeated demands. I think we need to start a class action suit against them as their practices are so very wrong and illegal. I can't emphasis the toll this has taken on my mental health. Truly the worst experience.
