There is a disconnect between the…
There is a disconnect between the salespeople and the terms of the contract. I got this alarm system for a house that was empty and being renovated. I specifically asked if the contract could be transferred to the new homeowner and told yes. Now that I have a buyer for the home, they are trying to make me pay a $1300 cancellation penalty. Deal with ADT directly and skip this company.
Buyer BEWARE!!
Buyer BEWARE!!! The cameras do NOT work. I called the company within the 3 day grace period to cancel. (the cameras never worked during this time). They instructed me that I could not cancel over the phone nor thru email. I had to mail in a hand written letter to cancel. -what is it 1980? I did as instructed. Then of course, they said they did not receive it. This is EXACTLY why I wanted to do it in an email that can be verified. This is company is a scam. I then called customer service to get it resolved. Adam, from the company literally laughed at me and the situation.
ADT Install Fee Ripoff
I called ADT to learn a bit more. They said they would send out a guy to look at my home and propose a system, but they would charge a refundable $99 credit for install. I didn't care for the system they proposed and now I'm trying to get refunds for the $99, plus a second charge for $100, plus the first monthly service fee of $71.99. What I'm learning is that there are two companies: ADT and "Protect Your Home". Both companies deny the charges occurred and tell me to call the other company. Nice. Spending hours on the phone with representatives. Why would you trust your home security to a massive bureaucracy that can't sort out their own billing.
Spammers!!
This company spams aggressively to promote their products. Avoid them at all cost!
DO NOT USE OR TRUST
DO NOT USE OR TRUST! We had Protect your home install it new ADT system in mid August. Initial installation took more than 10 hours. Less than 2 hours later, the system malfunctioned. It took a week to schedule them to get them out to repair it. I waited from 11am till 8pm with no tech ever arriving. Their excuse was that the tech wrecked on the way to my house because I was rushing him. They finally repaired it the following day, and again, it lasted two hours before it malfunctioned again. Between mid August until now, my "new" system has worked properly for less than 10 days. Each time I call for service, they are at least 5 hours late if they bother showing up at all. I've now been waiting for more than 10 days for management to contact me. Of course, we've not heard from them
Door Monitors not Insstalled At Time of Service
The young man that came installed everything was new and did not install the door monitors. So I went two months without protection and after much calling and review, finally got them installed and ADT did give me some credit. A representative named Robin was very helpful.
The system was installed
The system was installed. In less than a month it started going wrong.
They sent someone to fix it, because everything was so incorrectly numbered he was unable to fix all the issues. Promised to have the installer call back that day to let me know when he was going to come and correct the problems. 5 full days later I haven't heard a word from them.
I don't trust them and now have a lot of doubt in their integrity.
I'm very disappointed in their service and have to include ADT in my criticism at I trusted them to have only the best companies installing their products.
Stay Away. Buyers Beware. Both ADT and Protect Your Home Are A Scam
Beware of both ADT and protect your home. They have been double billing me for 5 months and refuse to resolve the issue. I had to go to the BBB to get the issue resolved and they are still threatening me to pay THEM when they are the ones who have stolen. Complete joke of a company with no customer support.
Never in a million years would I…
Update to my 2015 review, since i never did update the situation. Never in a million years would I recommend this company. Found a better price on security within my 3 day cancellation window, mailed my cancellation, and was refused termination of contract because they never received the letter. Admittedly this was over the weekend, but I also followed up on the Monday to be sure of receipt and nobody gave a second look. I even faxed a copy on the Monday as well. I was told to file for "mental incompetency" to get released from the contract. Ended up being locked in for 3 years paying double what I could have with a local business.
Very expensive for what I received
I paid almost $4,000 for a system which some of the expensive components do not work or are not synced. I expected the installers to return and fix what was not working but they never did.
Adt does protect your home but they…
Adt does protect your home but they will lie to any extent to get you to sign up. Tracy Smith is in corporate office and will give you his id# and tell you to call him if you need any help. He does not give you his phone number and no one will let you talk to him. Be careful and don't let them tell you they will help you because they won't. They don't care once they get your monet.
Existing vs New System Cost
I had an existing by older and non-active ADT system in the house. While I went ahead and got an expensive new system. The service person never really explained the total cost up front for the new system verses the option of repair and re-activation of the older system. frankly after see the new one I question if the older one was better. the total cost was never explained until after it was installed. So the process seemed a bit like a railroad job frankly. The new system seems to meet my need but it was expensive and I'm left wondering if there was a cheaper path for me.
The sales pitch is great.. BUT.....
The sales pitch is great... but once they get there to install, it's a completely different story. The $99 installation fee that was not supposed to me charged until my appointment date was charged to my account immediately. I was given one monthly price over the phone, yet he failed to tell me that price only applied if you had a land line phone (who has one of those anymore?). Once the installer got there, my monthly price doubled, I had to pay extra to get all of my doors covered, which I was not told in advance (why on earth would I only cover 2 entries?) I did not get my two remotes that were 'sold' to me and my $100 promotional Visa was removed from my account without telling me. I called later to get those items, they only offered me 1 remote and after some complaining and managerial approval, they finally 'gave' me my $100 Visa ... Now a month later, I am calling to find out where my Visa is... turns out they never sent me (or told me that I had to complete) a request form. The ONLY reason that they are getting a 2-star instead of a 1-star is because their installation tech was really nice. My advice, go with another company, sadly, I am locked into a 3 year contract now and not happy about it.

I do not like the high pressure sales tactics. Buy now or loose the credits toward equipment is unfair to the customer. Installation took until almost 11 pm and I was so tired that I did not comprehend all of the instructions. Have requested and not received a set of written instructions. Also, did not get the USAA Discount.

Took from March to July to complete the installation. Then another 6 weeks and 8 phone calls to get a certificate for my insurance company. I've just called to update account with my new credit card number and was hung upon 3x.
Protect Yourself from Protect Your Home
Do your research and see the large volume of negtive reviews about Protect Your Home (PYH), also operating as Defenders and many other names.
Updated 2021-03 :: on the below issues ... they threatened to take me to collections & small claims court on these items. Please stay away from ADT/Protect Your Home ... fair warning: protect yourself from "protect your home".
Update 2020-01 :: ADT bought Def/PYH for $381M. Unfortunately, there are no short term timelines for ADT to consolidate or merge with PYH business units (ie customer service, billing/accounting, etc). So before agreeing to a cheaper PYH deal, try to "sell" your PYH deal so that ADT does the install. ADT is reliable with above average customer service.
Read the reviews: You DO NOT want to deal with PYH/Def. Just not worth it. Read below for a few reasons why.
In the fall I called Defenders / Protect Your Home (ie "PYH") about installing an alarm system. We had their system at another house and felt both PYH and ADT were stellar. But this install did not go so well. They did a quick install on a Friday night... with a trainee. Since then we've had nothing but a broken system. Three months after the system was installed we had an alarm, while on vacation. CHP/sheriff showed up almost 3 hours after the alarm sounded, due to technical issues with our install.
I've had at least 7 service calls in the span of 4 months to fix install issues. This is because the original installation team did not perform due diligence testing to confirm if their system would work in that specific Malibu canyon. I told them that we had zero service reaching the house, but they convinced us to try it, "guaranteed".
Since the install, my family of 5 was awoken in the middle of the night, 16 times, because the system could not establish communications (either primary or alternate). However, instead of pulling the plug and letting us all walk away, PYH continued to send subpar technicians, claiming that one more service call would fix issues ... serviced by "our best".
We moved in May because of the Malibu fires. But the vendor continued to hold us to our contract , despite issues that surfaced many months before. I made multiple service requests for them to return to fix basic issues... neither ADT, nor Protect Your Home was willing to accept that these issues were obviously due to communication parameters beyond their control, like cell tower locations.
However, instead of letting the contract go, they now call me every day. I stopped paying after we moved, requesting escalation to a rational person, requesting to return all hardware and walk away. It was an obvious case of good technology in a place that is not serviced by reciprocating communications. It's been 3 months now and sometimes, after the Nth explanation, Protect Your Home will decide to resort to high frequency calls: multiple times each day from different numbers. None of the reps are aware of any prior discussions. No escalations allowed.
I'm just asking for a fair shake so I've asked to resolve this a few different ways, presenting different options, as follows:
Option A: I requested to pay for a qualified technician from PYH/Defenders to remove all sensors and reinstall them. This option would have made the most sense but I was not able to get a rep to schedule the visit within the 45 days I had to vacate the property. After I moved they did not agree to do this, despite an agreement with the new owners to come in for a day to complete the work.
Option B: I asked that we just agree that the system never worked as advertised and I can return the equipment. Since I had perfect on-time payment, I just asked that I was not held to the contract term of 2 years.
Option C: I requested credit for the remaining contract... towards a new contract with ADT, which I want to trust, as opposed to Protect Your Home, which I do not. At this point, most companies would walk away and release the customer from contractual obligations. But Protect Your Home wants to take me to collections unless I pay $500 or 50% of the remaining contract. Really? After having to move due to fires and other issues, they still want to gouge me to pay for a system that never worked as designed? Escalations used to solve obvious service and delivery issues, but this company's executives are too important to deal with real customers.
So I've decided to post here. If we can't come to a rational agreement I'm going to blow it up on social media... because if we were kids at the playground, our parents would all agree that Protect Your Home is the bully and I'm just a homeowner looking to walk away without a black eye.
The installation was great
Very Bad result - I found out afterward that the monthly amount was lot lot more than advertised. I was told -after my first bill came - that it was because I had email monitoring, which was NEVER explained. I also explained i would only need the service for a year as I was selling the property. I found out just now that the hand-held tablet had a 3 year contract. Basically, I was lied to about the monthly amount and the had the actual contract length hidden from me and never explained. I will NEVER use ADT again for any of my properties or businesses, and will tell everyone in my large circle of contacts to steer clear of the dishonest practices you push.
Always reliable
Always reliable. Fantastic service Richard one of the engineers is Brilliant

I wanted an estimate of using ADT and the guy came out to install a system... I originally only wanted an estimate. He was unable to wire it, left the wall box sitting on the countertop, and never came back. He did not install a doorbell camera.... said he didn't know how. No follow up. I called 4 weeks later and Jason came out to make things right. I asked him to let me check with another security company and could he call me in two days. Of course, he said. Again, no call, nothing.
These guys are pitiful. The installer started at 3:30, left my house at 9:45, and didn't get finished. Jason never came back.
This is really bad, as I think ADT is a competent company.
