My feedback is after 21 years with this…
My feedback is after 21 years with this credit union, I will be leaving. Why? I applied for an RV loan thru a dealer, they had me approved thru a different credit union, but I wanted to use mine. The dealer submitted the application got a counter offer back with approval at 7.99%. The CU then asked for proof of my residence, which I happily provided. You see I work remotely and part of the year I live in my RV in AZ and part of the year, I live at my daughters in UT. The minute they saw my mailing address was an RV resort, the pulled back my approval. I went to the local branch here in Mesa, AZ and talked to branch manager and assistant branch manager, but was told underwriting stands by their decision, unless I want to put 50% down but even that does not guarantee and approval. I am a senior, I am a snowbird, I live in my RV part of the year and discriminated against because of it. I will be closing my accounts today, filing a complaint with the BBB, as well as putting this same review on every social media platform I am aware of. I want other people to know it does not matter how long you have been with this CU if you live part time in your RV which a lot of us do close to retirement, you will be discriminated against.
Locked out accounts requiring branch visit for a remote member
After they worked with me over the phone (I live in California) to open my accounts and take my money, two months later they locked my online account and are requiring me to go into a branch with two forms of ID and proof of address. This is ridiculous! I'm not going to get on a plane to Utah just to get my online account with MACU unlocked. They need to provide alternative means of verifying identity and address without visiting a physical branch.
Terrible experience
I wanted to put money into this institution into two sizeable CDs. Two people to whom I spoke were rude to me (my son was shocked at how rudely they spoke to me -- one, a woman, even spoke to my son about me in the third person). When I left messages asking for someone to call me back either (1) they never called me back (this happened on more than one occasion) or (2) they finally did call me back -- but several days later -- and the rate that I wanted was gone by that point and replaced by a much lower interest rate. They made it outrageously difficult to open an account with them. The CDs never got opened and, now, I never will even attempt to deal with Mountain America CU ever again.
I Can See Why MACU's Ratings are So Low on Yelp and TrustPilot
I can see why their Yelp rating is only 2.7, and their TrustPilot rating only 2.0 (the latter probably more accurate), now that I've done business with them a little bit. Here are my complaints:
1. I transferred my money to them so I could open a CD since they had the highest rate I could find for a term of 12-18 months. The day the the money wire hit my new savings account with them, I called to set up the CD, since their system would not allow me to do it online. They said it would take 1-3 business days. After 4 days, the CD was still not open, so they had not kept their promise.
2. I called them on day 4 and they opened the CD on the spot, saying they had no record of me requesting the CD be opened. Top businesses nowadays often keep a record of phone convo's w/ clients so any customer service person can refer to it, thus give better client service, and avoid the super annoying and unprofessional question businesses sometimes ask of "who did you speak with?". The lady I spoke with on day one did not give me her name; how convenient, smh.
3. They were costing me significant money per day, since the CD was worth quite a bit.
4. On day 4, after they opened the CD over the phone, and confirmed it was opened, I requested a mere one day's worth of interest, since they had not kept their promise, they had proven it was quick and easy to open the CD (by doing it over the phone in minutes, instead of taking 1-3 days), and imo the client should not have to pay for the business not keeping their word and doing sloppy business in general. A different lady this time that was helping me said she checked and they would have to evaluate it, and someone should be getting back to me within a short time, and she gave me the exact # of days estimate.
5. Since they then did not get back to me via email as quickly as they had said they would, I contacted them again, so they had not kept their word again, so this was the 2nd time they had not kept their word.
6. They finally got back to me via email and asked me if I had any written documentation to support my request. How rude! Of course there was no written documentation, as the agreement was done by phone, and if they needed proof, then they should record the phone calls (after approval by client to record) and play them back to confirm them. They must know they promise 1-3 biz days to open a CD, as that must surely be their policy or the rep would not have told me that. And why would I open a savings account with them for the sole purpose of opening a CD at a high rate, and then not open the CD asap once the money was confirmed as in my savings account? They know that every time I have contacted them from the start, I had expressly said I wanted to open a CD at the special 5% rate that they were running at the time. I mean, really, how gauche.
7. I called them during all this process, trying to find out if they were going to credit me 1 day of interest or not (I could have asked for 2-3 days, since they had said 1-3 days, so they were 1-3 days late when I contacted them on day 4, and since they had not kept their promise, and were costing me time and money, yet I was generous, and only asked for 1 day interest). Their phone system said the wait was 25', and I could ask for a call back if I wished. I accepted this automated system offer, and then waited 35-40' and they never called back, so they broke their promise again, for at least the 3rd time, when I had only been doing business with them for about 1 week. In fact, they never called back at all, and I had to call them again after work that day.
8. Finally, when they had the nerve to ask me if I had any written documentation to support my claim, I said I was done with them, I was not going to ask again, they could either be professional and honorable or not, yet regardless, I was going to post at least one objective review online, telling people of my actual experience with them and their dreadful customer service. So, now at least one has been completed, as promised. I will complete my CD term with them and intend to never do business with them again.
5 stars
I love Mountain America because they are friendly and are eager to find a solution to whatever challenge I'm facing.
This is the worst credit union I have…
This is the worst credit union I have ever done business with.
They will charge you overdraft fees ANY time they can get away with it. When you call in, their support reps are unhelpful and even rude, talk over you, and I got so mad that I hung up on them. Even if you have deposited enough to cover everything in the same hour they WILL not refund a NSF fee, even when the Non Sufficent Funds is caused by a PENDING charge that they have not processed and will not be processed for 2 more days, they will charge you. Do yourself a favor and STAY away at ALL costs they will nickel and dime you to death with constant fees any time they can get away with it. I am closing my accounts with them as soon as I can. This is the last time I am putting up with their heartless bullshit and constant fees for anything and everything.
Can't set up new account if there's no branch nearby
Don't waste time trying to set up an account if you can't physically go into a branch to do it. Their remote verification process is a MESS and will ultimately reject you even if you have great credit, valid driver's license + passport, and a significant chunk of money to deposit. They don't actually have the capacity to do what they offer.
Car Loan
I have been with mountain America for nearly 40 years. I have zero debt. My home is paid off and I make six figure salary, in a job that I've had for 6 years. Mountain America refused to finance a new vehicle for me. University of Utah credit Union would happily have financed this new vehicle and ultimately the dealership gave me a great deal. I was extremely disappointed in mountain America. I remain so.

On 12/05/24 the bank removed $1,188.97 dollars, without my permission to put towards a car deemed totaled when I have GAP Insurance. GAP insurance claim is filed on behalf by your financial institution. The bank was listed as the financial institution only to find out later a typo error on the Gap showing Wade Subaru as the institution. No funds for utilities or Christmas for 2024. I would not trust this bank as far as I could chuck my house. STAY AWAY THERE EVIL!
Customer service does not exist
Customer service does not exist. I have not been able to contact them. I have been trying for over a month. Their phone calls are answered by a computer. On one occasion I got the computer to pass my call to talk to someone live. It never happened. I waited on the phone for three hours. I finally selected one for a call back. That never happened either.
Moving all our accounts to other backs…
Moving all our accounts to other backs or CU's. They have a lot of location (at least in Utah), but the , Online Banking, Phone Service, App and rates are all very poor.
Closing my account with MACU…
I have been banking with MACU for 10+ years. I have done all of my banking online. Sometimes I need to speak with someone at the bank but I cannot reach anyone. A 30-60 minute wait is normal, after going through the BS trying to talk with their computer. My time is just as valuable as theirs. If they don’t have time for me, then I don’t have time for them. I am closing my 7 accounts on Monday morning.
I am SHOCKED by the low score of…
I am SHOCKED by the low score of Mountain America Credit Union because it could not be farther from my experience. I've been a MACU member for almost a year and in that time they have helped me move away from my Big Bank, set up checking and savings accounts for my husband and I and our four boys, set up a HELOC and set up Youth CD's for our boys to start saving for life after parents. My local MACU has been amazing every time I've needed help and I've been in their branch WAY MORE than I ever did at my Big Bank, because they are so helpful and friendly. I cannot say enough great things about them and my experience! I had given up on financial institutions being customer friendly but MACU has renewed my faith! I hope you check them out!
Disappointing Experience with Rate Miscommunication
I had a frustrating experience with this credit union that I believe potential customers should be aware of. On 9/18/24, I reached out to open several one-year CDs at the advertised 5.25% APY. During my initial call, a representative assured me that I didn't need to rush, as the rates wouldn’t change until the end of the month.
I followed this advice and spent considerable time opening the account, only to find out later that the rates had changed unexpectedly. After multiple calls and speaking to different representatives, including a loan officer, I was consistently told that the rate was secure for another two weeks. However, upon attempting to finalize my accounts, I discovered that the rates had been altered, and I was unable to open the CDs due to a system error.
The customer service I received was far from satisfactory. Despite the confusion, it became clear that there was a lack of training and communication within the organization. I was given incorrect information by several agents, which is alarming for a financial institution. While I spoke with a supervisor who acknowledged the issue, the final response I received was that they couldn’t honor the original rate due to regulations—something I find hard to believe.
It's disappointing to see a company unwilling to stand by their word or take responsibility for their mistakes. Excellent customer service should go beyond being friendly; it should involve doing the right thing, which this credit union failed to do.
I would not recommend this credit union based on my experience.
WORTHLESS!! PIRATES!!! DONT BELIEVE A WORD THEY SAY!! ITS ALL LIES!!!Y
Macu was a great credit union when we started over a decade ago with them. since then they have continued to go downhill. my truck loan was never correct on the app, and if you talk to one department, you will get one answer and a completely separate answer from another department. they won't tell you the small details, like no you can't pay 5 months in advance, then charge you for paying 5 months ahead because they only credited you for 3 and will charge and charge and even threaten repo on your truck because you paid through Jan but they didn't put it that way, they only paid you through November but also never tell you anything. then I pulled it together after making the agreed upon payment in May because after my dad died I asked for a 3 month extension for Feb, March, April. made a payment in May and was about to make a June payment since I only owed 1500 on the truck when I asked for the extension and get told they are going to repo my truck!!! that I paid from 20k to 1500!! so I pay my truck off with my debit card because I was advised that would be the fastest so I didn't have to transfer money between banks and would release my title immediately and I could have it priority mailed to me. NOPE!! all wrong. that's what assist dept says, title depth says nope we are not releasing the title for 7-10 days and then you have to wait for 7-14 days after that to get your title. but that is not at all what assist managers said. and title dept is like too bad don't care you should have talked to us. funny, cuz you can't talk to the title dept until you have paid off the vehicle!!!! These guys are a joke!!! and they have quite often taken out auto debits before putting in the deposit that came in first just so they can charge you for each transaction and then put in your deposit!!! PIRATES!!!! GO ANYWHERE ELSE!! your money is safer with a drug addict on the corner than with Mountain America Credit Union!!! at least then you know where your money is going to go!!
Protection for employees who commit felonies
My ex wife works for them and they refuse to secure my accounts. She has illegally accessed my accounts and stolen my information and comprised my accounts. They PROVED she used her employee credentials to access my accounts and still keep her employed. Unfortunately I can’t move all my accounts because I have open loans there.
We spoke with Chris regarding questions…
We spoke with Chris regarding questions about a home mortgage. We are first time home buyers and aware that some of our questions may seem unnecessary and tedious, yet he was VERY impatient with us and got a short tempered and agitated tone quickly. It’s not a huge deal, but my wife and I do not feel like working with people like that when getting a loan and buying a house is already complicated enough.
The type of customer service they give…
The type of customer service they give in this branch is quite disappointing. (3028 S State Street).
This company makes their money on…
This company makes their money on charging you overdrafts I've always had plenty of money in my account somehow I've got $375 in overdrafts alone this year they don't refund those bad business
MOUNTAIN AMERICA CREDIT UNION DOES NOT…
MOUNTAIN AMERICA CREDIT UNION DOES NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CUSTOMERS! Please read and share with people..Thank you
First, I have been a member with Mountain America Credit Union for 5+ years & in this time I have had three different car loans along with a current a $10k credit line with MACU. In this time frame, I have NEVER missed a payment nor have I ever been late on a payment. So a few months back I bought a $52,000 BMW & can you believe it MACU passed on me? So another Credit Union (America First) jumped at having my business and me as a customer. Not only did America First get my new BMW loan but they also gave me a credit card with a $15k credit line. So I paid off whatever balance I had with Mountain America. So at this point, I’m thinking okay I have no more business with Mountain America. So why am I so upset with Mountain America; here is why?
My credit score is 780….So over the past 3 months I think I have no more business with MACU yet I didn’t realize I had a monthly chiropractic membership ($49.99) that was still being charged to my MACU credit card. So I had no reason to think to look at my statement & I NEVER received a phone call or a text from MACU collection department or any of their representatives regarding any past due issues. Which should have been a concern to their collection department as to why a perfect 5+ year customer of theirs is now going delinquent over a simple $150? Keep that in mind $150!!
So I never got a call or text from their collection department but what does MACU do instead they sent a derogatory letter to the credit bureau at which time I get a text from my credit monitoring service that my credit scores just dropped 79 points!
79 POINTS!!! I’m like what? So I go and looked at my credit report and that is how I found out that MACU collections department filed a derogatory letter on me over $150!! WITHOUT EVER CALLING OR TEXTING me!!! A perfect 5+ year payment record with them and I mean perfect and I get NO Call/NO TEXT from them. I just lost 79 points over $150 that I didn’t even realize was being billed to MACU credit card. All of which a simple phone call or text from a MACU rep would have handled this matter.
So I then call MACU thinking this is going to get resolved. I speak to several people including manager who heard what had actually happened. The manager even agreed with me that prior to this matter I have never been late on any of my payments and EVEN more she could see that MACU collection department never reached out to me via phone either in their records on their system. She told me they emailed me a notice. We will get to the email in a moment. So I asked the manager why do they have my phone number on file if they don’t ever use it? Oh wait, get this; if I log into the MACU app I get a text INSTANTLY stating someone is logging into my account. But apparently my phone number doesn’t work the rest of the time with MACU or their collection department before sending derogatory letters to the credit agencies over a simple $150 error!!!
So back to the email that they said the sent. I don’t know about everyone else but I get 50-60 junk emails a day & if I miss a day or two of going through all them they just pile up. As I’m sure they do for a lot of people. So NO!! I never received the emails regardless if they sent them. However, a simple call or text from MACU regarding this issue would have handled everything!! Don’t all of you get your phone calls and texts? I know I do more so than an email.
So moving forward, after speaking with the manager she agreed she could understand my frustration of losing 79 points on my credit score over $150 without even FIRST receiving a courtesy phone call from MACU collection department or any representative. Also, she told me that someone would contact me regarding this matter. Well NO ONE DID! Shocking right! Instead MACU just sent me a letter stating the matter is closed and it’s staying the way it is! So if any of you believe Mountain America Credit Union values your business or appreciates you as a customer THEY DON’T!
MOUNTAIN AMERICA CREDIT UNION DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU AT ALL!!!
