Outstanding Groups Undermined by Individual Therapy
TL;DR: This program has excellent group therapy and several outstanding providers, but my experience with individual therapy and the handling of consent and billing issues significantly detracted from my overall care.
I am giving this program 3.5 stars, and I want to be clear that I would have given it 5 stars were it not for my experience with individual therapy.
The group therapy component was excellent. The clinicians who facilitated the groups were knowledgeable, compassionate, and created a genuinely supportive environment. I found the group work to be meaningful and beneficial to my treatment, and I am grateful for that part of the program.
I also want to specifically acknowledge Hunter and Juan, who facilitated group therapy. Both were thoughtful, compassionate, and skilled at creating a safe and respectful group space. Their groups were grounding and well-run, and they made a meaningful positive impact on my experience. I would also like to recognize Albert, who was a wonderful provider. He was attentive, compassionate, and supportive, and consistently made me feel heard and respected. My interactions with him reflected the level of professionalism and empathy patients hope for when entering treatment.
Unfortunately, my experience with my assigned individual therapist, Emily Tully, significantly impacted my overall care. I entered this program during a period of significant emotional distress and was actively seeking care, support, and stabilization. In my experience, the individual therapy I received did not provide that. Throughout my sessions, I found her to be emotionally unavailable and dismissive, particularly during moments when I was vulnerable or struggling.
I have participated in several treatment programs over the years, and this was the first time I experienced an individual therapeutic relationship that felt consistently cold and lacking in understanding or care. When I shared openly, I often felt met with a critical or judgmental tone rather than curiosity or support. The approach felt directive rather than collaborative, which made it difficult to engage meaningfully or feel safe expressing myself.
I also want to note an experience that felt particularly discouraging. Emily was aware that I was pursuing additional treatment to supplement my care and that I would need to miss a day in the program for that reason. I was told I would be required to provide a written note for each absence, despite having already signed a release authorizing her to communicate directly with the other treatment provider. While I understand that documentation requirements may be part of program policy, the way this was communicated felt corrective rather than supportive or collaborative. This approach felt unnecessarily rigid and non-collaborative, and left me feeling unsupported in my efforts to responsibly manage my care.
Additionally, I believe it is important for prospective patients to be aware of the program’s laboratory practices. The program utilizes an out-of-network laboratory, with individual lab tests billed at approximately $1,500 each. I was not adequately informed of this in advance. When I expressed discomfort and clearly stated multiple times that I did not consent to assuming financial responsibility for these charges, I was repeatedly told by Emily that signing paperwork accepting financial responsibility was required. My concerns were not met with understanding or discussion, but rather with continued pressure to sign despite my objections.
In a therapeutic setting, compassion, collaboration, transparency, and respect for patient consent are essential. While the group component of this program — and providers like Hunter, Juan, and Albert — were strong, my experience with individual therapy and the handling of billing and consent issues fell short of those standards and significantly impacted my overall experience.
I've been a patient for 10 years and…
I've been a patient for 10 years and missed an appointment. I'm in crisis and they won't see me only as a new patient with a wait of a month. I will be dead by then. They also refused to see my wife too. Stay away as if you actually in a crisis they won't help at all.
Great place to Work
As a former staff of the clinical team, I had the privilege of working with a compassionate, collaborative, and dedicated team who truly prioritized the well-being of the clients we served. The salary was competitive, and the benefits were affordable and met my needs. I had to leave the company due to personal reasons but would definitely return if I was ever back in NJ.
This place is very helpful to my journey
A positive experience since everyone at Genpsych is amazing.
This is a safe environment and they walk you through step by step
I went to Genpsych in Avenel, is a new place and they met my expectations,
Everyone work with you. They helped my daughter a lot, with school and so much more. I love how they take extra care, they walk your child to the bathroom and wait outside until they finish and walk them outside when they ready to leave that make me feel comfortable and confident to leave my daughter, also besides taking care of the child they also care for the parents providing group therapy and support which I believe as a parent we need it in those difficult situations.great place to be.I recommended it 100%. They all great
Everyone is knowledgeable
Everyone is knowledgeable, caring, kind and helpful. They taught me skills to use when I wasn't coping. If I was in the middle of an episode they helped calm me down with an ice pack and talking to me. If needed we even walked outside. They really cared.
Wonderful Support for our Family!
We are still receiving treatment, but so far, we're so thankful for the amazing support from GenPsych. We didn't know what to expect at first putting our child into a program, however, they make the process very smooth and informative. From the first phone call, the support and clinical staff have been kind, understanding, and helpful.
I definitely recommend if you’re a parent looking for help with your child’s mental health. They truly care and go above and beyond.
I truly believe this program works
I truly believe this program works. If you commit to the process, you’ll find qualified professionals ready to support you. What I appreciate the most is the personalized approach to each case. I am especially grateful for therapist Robert and the psychiatrist—their dedication made a difference in my daughter’s life. Of course, she also put in the effort, and our family is deeply thankful for all the support we have received so far.
I was an employee at GenPsych
I was an employee at GenPsych. This is the most “for profit” company I have ever encountered! They steal from employees by not paying them or taking their 401k contributions, but most importantly, they steal from the clients by admitting those they are not able to serve and readmitting clients who have used all their insurance benefits and then hounding them for payments. The CEO and CFO are despicable human beings (and I use the term human lightly). I believe that because this is a difficult career to find employment with livable salary they have been able to hire good people that they then abuse. Clearly there are significant flaws in the regulations of this industry. Makes it difficult to choose between whether this type of care is better privatized or state funded. And FYI, they encourage their employees to write good reviews , suggesting you will be compensated for doing so, though I have never seen that happen.
Causes more stress, run!
I began my treatment with GenPsych in their outpatient program and once completed, I was placed with an outpatient psychiatrist, Dr. Oyem, to manage my medications moving forward. Since then, my experience has been horrible. I currently have been without my anti-depressant medication for over 1 week because it is absolutely impossible to reach the doctor unless you have an appointment, which is rarely even with himself to begin with. At the end of my appointments, I am told that my medications will be sent to my pharmacy right away. They pick and choose what medications to send to the pharmacy and which ones to give you a hard time about. The doctor changed the dosage of one of my medications and never told me, I found out at the pharmacy. I have been calling their office for 1 week now and every one of them insist that all they can do is email the doctor and hope for a response to approve the medication refill (which should have been sent at my last appointment, but wasn't). Dr. Oyem's "assistant", Saidin Ubpon, is worse. He is not helpful, at all, extremely rude, and he hung up on me during a phone call of me practically begging for them to send my medication to the pharmacy. They will not allow me to speak to a manager, as they insist that this is not something the manager deals with and this can only be handled by the doctor himself. This is the THIRD time that Dr. Oyem and his staff have withheld medication from me.
Please save what's left of your mental sanity and health and stay away from this place.
Unethical Practices w/ Employees and Clients
I wanted to alert you to a mental health and substance use organization that has kept thousands of dollars from its 1099 Contracted Virtual Therapists. The organization is GenPsych and it currently has nine offices in New Jersey. I am a Licensed Social Worker who worked there as a 1099 employee for four months. I resigned, after needing to beg for my paychecks on their due dates.
I have not been paid since my resignation and have only been paid for nine out of the 55 sessions I had while employed with GenPsych. I am owed thousands of dollars. Sadly, I am not alone. This is common practice for GenPsych.
This is an organization in the business of saving lives by providing mental health and substance use services through its invaluable Clinicians. One of the most challenging problems Clients have with their mental health services is lack of consistency in Clinicians. The turnover rate is high. Sadly, GenPsych continues this cycle by not only harming their employees, but creating even more challenges and struggles for their clients.
I am motivated to obtain my pay, but more so for the unethical practices this organization has been able to get away with. I hope to help someone else rethink their decision of being employed by or seeking services through GenPsych.
RUN!!!
RUN!!!! After appointment, staff called to refer me to another company, set up 3 way conference with that company that sounded even sketchier than GenPsy. Strange call.
Never could get anyone to call me to tell me what the doctor recommends.
I did get the bill though :)
Run , Run Run!!
They do not follow state guidelines. They care about the money and not patient care. They closed a site down and only give the families and staff hours notice. This is a shame for clients who needed therapy and medications.
Not easy to get a hold of anyone
Not easy to get a hold of anyone ! I tried email several times no response I Don g think it s the doctors fault or nurse practitioner s fault but many of times had difficult time getting anyone to call back. My mother a masters of social work finally trying herself pushed me to find another psych service. I did like my nurse practioner but she didn t understand difficultly of getting through
The secretary Theresa is very…
The secretary Theresa is very condescending, rude, her attitude is out of the world zero compassion horrible customer service, never responds even to emails. You have to chase down providers for appointments. If I don’t call and follow up I would not know her psychiatrist was leaving outpatient. My teenage daughter was left without psychiatrist which she is supposed to be seen each month and had to chase each down each time, the system is soo broken!
Run!!
Run!!! .... this was awful for my daughter! During a family session the counselor called her by the wrong name. Not even close to her given name! Same counselor cancelled a 1:1 session *during* the session for a "family problem". Why was she on her phone?!? Didn't reschedule!!
When daughter needed medication refills, the psychiatrist admin called to say "(insert incorrect name) has missed her last 3 appointments & there will be no refills". My child missed NO appointments.
After discharge, I asked for summary notes & they extended 60 days beyond discharge!!! (August notes for May discharge!!) They charge BY THE PAGE!!
Only positive outcome is that they recommended CMO services.
1 perk, rest no good
1 perk. they offer telehealth.
personally, my experience with the admin staff and therapist were sub par; lack of follow up, not remembering details about me that i'd shared during previous sessions. i understand its awkward and takes time to build rapport with a new therapist, especially electronically. i am open and flexible, but what upset me is each session we had, she had to refer to her notes as we started our sessions. it seems like a minor thing, but to me, it's an attention to detail. also, their front office staff does not respond to messages for days, sometimes weeks at a time. my insurance does not charge copays for telehealth visits(i spoke with the insurance and see my EOB where it shows $0.00 co pay due), my insurance co. called their billing department to verify i do not have a copay, but they ignored that and continue to ask me for a copay. also, my pharmacy contacted genpsych for a refill multiple times and never got a response. thank goodness my primary care doc was able to fill the RX. i thank god i had an alternative to gen psych.
GenPsych was the rope for me to climb out of the pit
I had a fantastic experience at GenPsych Livingston. I personally went down the partial care / mental health iop track and I cannot recommend this center enough as a safe and constructive place for recovery. The tools are all there for someone to succeed, but it is also up to the individual to put in the work towards recovery. Most of the staff is fantastic and have their own styles of facilitating groups. It is an excellent place for group therapy and for providing structure when you’re building up from rock bottom. Thank you GenPsych!
The DBT program saved my life
The DBT program saved my life, its the only DBT I’ve ever done where I’ve been able to actually use the skills when I leave program. My therapist was Manny but I had a really great experience with all of the therapists there. Whenever I meet someone struggling I tell them to go to GenPsych!!
The director Linda Mullin spoke to me as crazy, not mentally ill.
I was out of medication and had an emergency that left my medication not a priority because I was there for so many others. I called the office this past Friday and left a message. I then called again Monday and left 2 detailed messages in two different voicemails. No call back. They were aware I had no medication left and could not get there during their hours. I called this morning and Kerrie answered from the main office and said no doctors would talk to me because they are in meetings and won't answer, and refused to take a message. She said I need to be seen there's nothing else she can do. I stated I had an emergency. She just didn't care. I then called back and asked for her name and 10 minutes later, I had the mental health facility call me back. The front desk receptionist was one that didn't call me back. But she did today. She said she couldn't leave a message for the doctor. He wasn't in. And she couldn't get anything called in. I HAVE to be seen. I asked to speak to the director and she said she was in multiple meetings and could not talk to me. When I also asked if she can give me Kerry's last name to report, she said it is policy she can't. Yet she gave me the therapist I've never seens information the last time I was seen and also both doctors. So what is different for a last name of a receptionist? I had work during the hours. I called out of work and went in and the doctor let me know he was there at 9:43am when I spoke to the front desk and that it should have been put through or a message should have been taken. I was VERY upset, and they tried to use my "no medication" as an excuse, but wouldn't you be? No call backs. Nothing. They treated me like I was a child, and spoke down to me, all but the amazing doctor I saw. And guess what? When I said I was reporting them, who shows up during their busy schedule? The director. I called the main number and asked Kerry for her full name. She put me on hold and never picked back up. I called 7 times after. I know excessive but I wanted to prove that every single one of those times I called, she picked up and hung up. The director said there is no need to fire someone that does that, just will retrain. Does anyone think retraining someone who hangs up on mental health patients is appropriate? I think that is taken too lightly. People are mentally ill who come here and this can cause a death, it can cause so much. It worries me as I come from a family who suffers from mental health and how you treat your patients is important. Oh, and I did try to give the director a hug and she rudely said no "boundaries" in a really rude and unwelcoming manner. I then went to the main office because I wanted to explain to Kerry why I was upset. I was very calm by then, not crying or upset anymore. . By the time I got there the director already ran over and moved Kerry so I couldn't speak with her. I called to report this matter from there so the director could be available. She then said I have to leave the premises. When we left and were walking outside I asked how she can be a director and tolerate this. She said she's been in this field for a long time and can now tell the difference between mental health and crazy. And looked at me and walked away. A director. Her name is Linda Mullin. These facilities are so important due to so much. Outbursts of all kinds are done by mentally ill because of mistreatment and ignorance. This is one of them and should be addressed immediately.
