Disappointing experience with Summerfield Browne – complaint ongoing

I am extremely disappointed with my experience with Summerfield Browne Solicitors.

I instructed the firm in May 2026 to assist me with a complaint against the DWP. My understanding from the engagement letter was that the agreed fixed fee of £1,200, including VAT, covered the DWP complaint and escalation to the Independent Case Examiner (ICE) if necessary.

I had previously used Mr Essat for legal work and had a positive experience, which is why I trusted him with this matter. Unfortunately, this experience has been very different.

My concerns include the failure to progress the matter as I understood had been agreed, the handling of important evidence I provided, and the subsequent billing dispute. I paid £1,600, despite my understanding that the agreed fixed fee was £1,200. I have also raised questions about the final invoice and the firm's time records.

As someone with dyslexia, I need clear communication and sufficient time to understand complex legal and financial information. I was disappointed with how matters were explained and how my instructions were handled.

I initially contacted Christian Browne because the engagement letter identified him as the person to contact with complaints. I was subsequently directed to other members of the firm, which caused confusion about who was responsible for handling my complaint.

I have now submitted a formal complaint and requested a refund, an explanation of the billing, and a complete copy of my file. The firm has acknowledged my complaint and confirmed that it is being investigated. I am still awaiting its substantive response, so this review reflects my experience and concerns to date.

I had hoped for a much better experience, particularly given my previous dealings this member of staff. I hope the complaint process will provide clear answers and a fair resolution.

Helped me resolve a probate dispute and communicated well throughout the process

We used Summerfield Browne to handle the sale of three properties through auction. This required the prompt preparation of the Auction Pack etc.
