Thank you for contacting us. An investigation by the Animal Justice Project has alleged welfare concerns and published distressing images of goats in a farm contracted by Delamere Dairy, a supplier of Suma.
Since the Animal Justice Project approached us with these allegations we have investigated.
Initially we raised our concerns with Delamere. We received a detailed explanation from the farm in question, responding to all the concerns raised by the Animal Justice Project.
We have relied on the expertise of independent assurance standards to assess Delamere’s farms, rather than relying on Delamere’s own assurances or the footage supplied by the campaign group. In particular, we have reviewed:
• The Red Tractor Goat Farm Assurance certification for the Delamere farm in question
• Independent, unannounced veterinary inspections for the farm and a letter of assurance from the farm’s local vet that animals on the farm are well looked after.
• We have also been in contact with the accreditation body
We have also reviewed information on the farms that supply the Delamere products stocked by Suma. They all demonstrate through recent Red Tractor audits that they are complying with Red Tractor Dairy Goats Scheme Assurance Standards.
As such, for the time being we will continue to stock Delamere products, but we will be monitoring the situation closely.
Prior to this investigation, we had begun the process of reviewing the standards of animal welfare required for the products we stock. The issues and concerns highlighted by the Animal Justice Project will feed into that review.

Shocked and disappointed.

As a customer of over 30 years, I am shocked and disappointed that Suma sell products which clearly cause suffering to goats, as exposed by Animal Justice Project's footage of Delamere Dairy. What has happened to Suma's ethical standards?

Animal welfare advice

Dear Suma company ,
I was upset to learn that you refuse to drop Delamare diary products

There has been evidence that Delamare products , have poorer animal welfare standars , including killing of baby goats. This is a horrific cruelty that must end NOW.

I kindly ask you , not to purchase these diary products .

Thank you for your careful consideration to this important matter . Animals are not ours . We have to show them respect they deserve . Have a nice day.

How can anyone buy these products

How can anyone buy these products, if you care about animals then don’t support this cruelty, this company is treating these animals in such a cruel way, you say that Red tractor has assured you of the welfare standards in this farm, but Red tractor is not a independent body so of course it’s going to back the farm, that doesn’t mean much to me about the standards in this farm or any farm under the Red tractor as it’s funded by farming

No longer ethical !!!

Having been buying their products for many years and admiring their ethical stance I'm now considering a boycott due to their involvement with Delamere Dairy. Evidence has been obtained by Animal Justice Project of dreadful treatment of goats and kids plus awful conditions on the farm in Skipton that supplies Delamere Dairy. Despite knowing this Suma refused to stop stocking their "products" and have believed the company lies. I've viewed the videos etc and am heartbroken, angry and devastated by the treatment of these innocent animals. Suma can no longer call themselves ethical of they continue their involvement with Delamere!

Animal Justice Project send undercover investigators into farms. The photographs and facts cannot be argued with.
Off course when you investigated them they cleaned up there act and hid things.
That is always what Industrial Farms do.
Your reply does not satisfy me. I will be boycotting your products and asking others to do likewise until such a time as you cease dealing with Delamere.

Siding with animal abuse company

I have previously contacted Suma on several occasions regarding the following and have received not one response from them:

The so-called 'ethical' wholesaler is still believing the lies that Delamere Dairy is telling them and listening to useless welfare certificates.

Suma currently states "we will continue to stock Delamere products".
Despite clear evidence on camera of multiple abuses, severe lameness and the killing of kid goats, the wholesaler is choosing to side with the standards laid out by the 'Red Tractor Goat Farm Assurance' scheme.

Effectively, they are siding with an industry exploiting animals for profits. This is outrageous.

I emailed Suma some weeks ago with feedback regarding their Ecoleaf dishwasher tablets and to date have failed to get a response. The tablets do not live up to their claims, leaving washed items still dirty, smeared and with a white powdery residue and grit. I have found this to be the case on all my dishwasher programmes. Nothing wrong with the machine, a standard tablet works perfectly. Poor product, rotten customer service.

Peanut swindle

We checked various online suppliers to get mixed nuts that weren't full of peanuts. We rejected ones that said they contained peanuts. Tesco, for instance, gave peanuts as second ingredient (by weight) after almonds. Suma didn't mention peanuts so we bought 1 kilo bag. The bag visibly contained so many peanuts that we separated and weighed them - 367grams out of 1 kilo, clearly the largest ingredient. Leaving aside the facts that peanuts are a legume, not a nut, and that peanuts are cheaper to buy than Suma mixed nuts, and that the real mutts aren't particularly high quality, it seems like sharp practice to pack the bag with peanuts. Especially when the company bangs on about their fluffy ethical standards. I am henceforth much less likely to trust what Suma say, or to buy their products.

Antwort von Suma Wholefoods

We're so sorry to hear this. Apologies for the inconvenience and disappointment. We've only recently claimed our account on this review site, hence the delay in responding. Peanuts are clearly listed as the first, and therefore main, ingredient on the product label. This is also shown on the product page on our wholesale website. The product specification information we share with our retail customers about our mixed nuts states that they contain 18% peanuts, as well as hazelnuts 18%, almonds 17%, cashews 17%, walnuts 15%, and brazil nuts 15%. We don't understand how this confusion could have occurred and we'd like to get to the bottom of it. Sometimes there can be a slight discrepancy in the exact percentages while they are being mixed but it absolutely shouldn't vary by this much. We know it's been quite some time, but if you do have any left we'd like to submit a sample to our quality control team to investigate. Please can you tell us where you bought these from so we can look into it? If you email us (marketing@suma.coop) we'll do everything we can to help. Many thanks, Sophie - Suma
