They sent me a sleeping bag with tears and down clearly leaking out. An expensive bag as well. I needed to proceed with a planned trip in which I needed the bag and offered to repair the bag and would appreciate a small amount for my time and materials and they agreed, but later offered zero assistance or follow up. I was passed around until it became evident they were just stealing my time until I quit. I have been a full time climber for 30+ years, the main contributor to summitpost (Dow). I do not advise buying gear from backcountry.com (steepncheep) with so many other valid choices out there.

Received a bag that had a rip in it, only had one of two straps and had dirt inside the bag. Customer Service requested pictures of the damage, which I sent. I returned to them using their Return authorization. Received confirmation they received the bag. I then received confirmation the return was complete, with information about how long my refund would take. Ten days later, when I asked about my refund, was told I was only receiving a store credit because sent back a dirty, used bag which was missing a strap. Which I did, as that was how I received it from them. All the second Customer Service person could tell me, was, the first person made no notes, so too bad for me.

This site is simply where Backcountry(.com) dumps their unwanted gear - and they do their best to make sure they get their money out of that unwanted gear. It’s unfortunate. I’ve had good experiences with the main site.

I have been promised a refund after providing the pictures of the damage for a second time. Customer Service doesn’t understand why I’m skeptical I’ll ever see the refund.

DHL lost in transit. Package sat in VA for several days so I called S&C. They sent replacement via Fed Exp. It came in a timely manner. New Issue: Replacement didn't fit so I returned and re-ordered in different size. Now waiting for DHL to send. DHL records show it is delayed. Shows handed off to post office in an IL hub and to allow 1-3 days, (not business days) for tracking update. Here it is 5 days later and I see package has been delayed. Same story, different day. Too bad DHL/Post Office holding up orders. I don't blame S&C but won't continue to "work" for my orders. S&C phone rep was very nice but told me that I could contact DHL or post office. I told him that S&C contracts out to DHL so in my opinion it is their package and they should look into it. I doubt that's going to happen so I will wait to see if/when pkg. arrives. I'm ready to cancel.

Jacket had a hole and they quickly sent a replacement

Unbelievably inflexible service. They harp on about an authorisation code that is needed before they will complete the transaction. However they do not listen when told that Amex do not give the code to the customer, it must be requested by the merchant directly. Quite a simple statement of fact after I rang Amex to inquire, and yet Steep and Cheap or is it Fixed and Inflexible?, just say that they will not do anything without the code. Not even take the time to ring Amex, as the bank told me they need to do.

Shipped a damaged item. Given incorrect information by a "gearhead" then conflicting incorrect information by the next "gearhead". Absolutely useless

The checkout process consistently fails, indicating a clear technical issue on their end. Despite attempting various cards and methods, the problem persists. Their suggested solution is archaic, requiring customers to place orders over the phone, reminiscent of a bygone era. This inconvenience undermines the efficiency and purpose of the website in my opinion.

THEY ARE THE BEST!!! I do not know why they'd have a low rating. If you don't know your own outdoor gear sizes...that's your fault. If you want to save money BIG TIME on TOP NOTCH and BRAND NEW EQUIPMENT... this is the place!!!!!

Steep and cheap falsely represented the product I purchased both on their website and through their chat feature with a “gear head.” After purchasing the product and discovering it was misrepresented, I was told to ship it back at my expense after already paying the initial shipping charges. I will not be shopping here again.

After reading all the negative reviews I was in doubt about ordering. I found a pair of North Face snow boots and ordered them anyway.
I received the boots; on time and they are just what I had placed the order for. I AM PLEASED, so I just placed another order for 2 jackets...........we will see if I will be pleased with this order.........if so, I think I have found me a good place to shop!

Best deals ever and the shipping is very quick. They ship the same day which is very awesome!

My 14 y/o purchased a helmet that didn’t fit. We sent it back the following day and are STILL WAITING for his refund despite it being in their hands 21days. Website says 1-3 business days once received. I’ve sent two emails- a week apart, and am waiting a response. Disappointing

I read several reviews that were negative, but I decided to gamble on a pair of shoes. I placed the order on a Monday and promptly received a confirmation email. The next day I received the shipping confirmation with the tracking number. The shoes were delivered on Friday. They were the correct pair, size, and color.

My experience was very positive.

Extremely bad service and false information.
I placed an order and was offered 15% discount and free two day shipping due to a previous problem ordering a product. I did not get the discount and the 2 day shipping did not happen. When product arrived it was delivered to the local university bookstore NOT my address. I spend hours with company and Fed X tracking it down and then it was re-delivered to the wrong house. I returned the product and was told refund would be 2-3 days, the customer service person said he was expediting it. 18 days later and many calls still no refund even though I received an email that return was complete on October 6th (now the 19th.) Again today I am told it will be 2-5 days for refund. This company is woefully bad at their fulfillment and customer service. Their customer service people appear scripted and tell you whatever they want to get you off the phone. Try to reach someone above them, you will win the lottery before that gets accomplished.

Ordered a pair of ski pants which were never shipped. 10 days later receive a message that my “return” was complete and get a PayPal refund of the purchase price. Which would be fine if they had also refunded to $75 USD international shipping cost for an item they never sent. So it seems like a pretty blatant scam.

I have ordered from both Back Country (a related company) a few times and now once from Steep and Cheap. I have never had any problem. I was a bit uncertain whether to order from Steep and Cheap after reading reviews here, but due to my experience with Back Country (including returns and replacement product due to clothing sizing) I decided to take a chance. My order from Steep and Cheap, arrived quickly, was packed well, and came in perfect condition. FYI, I ordered a arm-less folding chair that I could take to the beach and use for playing guitar.

Buyer Beware of Steep&Cheap! Not worth the time and energy hassle of dealing with being scammed by their bait and switch price tactics - listed price versus invoiced price.
Now, have to deal with with these people, if they ever reply to my complaint filing (via their online messaging), and my payment process center.
Not worth the time and energy! BEWARE!!!

Update. I called customer service and they resolved my return issue. I paid $92 for item and only refunded $78. There is no email or transparency why the refund was so low. Their return policy says you must only pay for shipping back. Customer service fixed the issue and refunded what was due. I appreciate their fast speed at shipping and resolving issues. I have used S&C for 31 orders and never really had a problem except getting skimmed on returns.

I still would recommend REI for returns over steepandcheap, sounds like other people got skimmed on returns as well. I definitely will only use steepandcheap if I am sure I will not return the item. But they do have better deals than REI except when REI has their 20% off in outlet items.

This place had great prices and they were easy to contact and get a refund after I changed my mind about buying a pair of bindings.
I believe I called them around 8:30pm. I was able to talk with a person who was very willing to help me.

I eventually went back and bought the bindings anyway because they were a great deal. This did require me to buy a compatible splitboard. Now I have 2 splitboards! This is going to be an epic winter!

No wait time with customer service - answered phone on weekend and delivered product five days earlier than scheduled. Product well wrapped and shipped in sturdy box. Customer service very attentive with shipping questions. Price was 15% cheaper than competitors.
