The telephone system is absolute crap

The telephone system that has been implemented for Southend hospital is appallingly bad. You ask for the department and the system repeats it back to you and asks you to confirm Yes or No. The system doesn't understand or accept any response at all and chucks you back at the beginning of the process. I assume that some manager somewhere received a nice fat bonus for implementing this rubbish

Disgusted in waiting time fir Appointment

Been waiting 13.5 months for an ENT appointment at Southend Hospital due to dentist concern about Mouth Cancer, I have already had breast cancer in the last 2 yrs and am disgusted at having to wait so long.
I have now received a call asking me to attend Broomfield Hospital as Southend so backlogged. But this appointment was only because my dentist and I have chassed things up. This is a disgrace and both NHS and Government should hang their heads in shame.

E N T and Urology

E N T, visit today , Consultant sorted my ears and the staff were very nice ,also Urology 3 weeks ago again all the staff friendly and a bit of banter to take my mind off my procedure so all was well in the end. Many thanks to all the staff.

Praise for the staff in the eye department

I had been visiting the eye department over the last few months & when my treatment was finished, I wrote a very good review. I had another appointment for a cataract yesterday in the same department. I was so pleased with the service I had. Firstly I saw a lovely young man who did the first checks & was very helpful. I can't remember his name. He may remember me, as it was an 8.30 appointment & I told him he could go home after seeing me! We had a laugh! I then saw Lynette, who was lovely & afterwards Dr. Ahmad. He was so helpful, charming & explained everything. Please thank them for me. Gillian Mitchell

Endoscopy unit/ Gastroscopy

Had a Gastroscopy today 26/1/25 in the endoscopy unit.
Amazing kind and knowledgeable staff.
I was a bit nervous but made me feel at ease.
The theatre was ready and clean.
The doctor was efficient, I had a sedation and did not feel anything.
You get your results straight away.
I was there for 90 minutes.
Very professional.
And I want to mention the Endo.Admin, he was very helpful and going the extra miles to welcome you when you come in .

Recently I attended outhend Hospital

Recently I attended Southend Hospital A and E with a suspected stroke fortunately it turned out I had only suffered Transient Global Amnesia. Following a lot of tests in A and E I was transferred to the Stroke ward. I spent 2+ days in there and the staff were brilliant! I must say that Jenna in particular (hope I've spent you name right love) never stopped for a moment and was cheerful all the time. During my time in the hospital everybody from the porters and cleaners to the Doctors and Surgeons are excellent. However I think the upper overpaid Admin need a drastic shake up. Car park pricing is a total rip off and should be time actually spent there. Getting through on the phone is virtually impossible. From what I understand money in the NHS is spent without control is this incompetence or back handers? Finally whilst I appreciate young doctors there at times have to put in very long stressful hours etc once they climb the ladder is a very lucrative occupation. Our farmers, fishermen, military ,firemen,police etc also experience these conditions plus many dangers but for the doctors to strike is disgusting. Keith

I’m sat here with a lovely lady who has a blood clot sat here for 9 hours and another lovely lady who has suspected appendicitis who has been sat here for 12 hours it’s a joke if we go France and get on a dinghy we get free private health sort this out stop spending my tax money on a poxy war in Ukraine and employ some staff yeah

Elizabeth loury ward staff were amazing, kind, caring, considerate and even the tea lady was so kind and caring, shout out to mr Ahmed urology team ln minor ops centre, including Margo the specialists nurse and the nurse that held my hand, I’m so glad that you have Made me more relaxed and more confident, also the radiotherapy team the guys were amazing and made me more relaxed as I didn’t no what to expect on my 1st time, only down fall was the radiologist explaining the side effects of the radiotherapy, not very well explained

Terrible experience by rude staff

Never been to any hospital A&E Department where many of the staff were so rude. Reception women in A&E were disgusting, the way they spoke to people including me. Abrupt, barking orders and with bad attitudes and too full of self importance. If they don’t want to work there, then why do the job?? The place looks like a dump. Changed so much in the years since l left Southend. That can be accepted, but the rudeness and arrogance of the staff is not acceptable. It was the women in particular behind the Reception desk and the nurses? that triage you when you arrive that were the problem. Not good when people are feeling poorly.
Disgusting treatment. Who do they think they are to treat people like that???

Wonderful caring experience today Dr Ola was very reassuring and cheerful he explained everything that was happening today, we couldn’t have asked for more. Thank you to all the staff that cared for us today.

Highly Recommend

The nurse that was in rheumatology couldn't do enough for me and I very much appreciated it, wish I had her name so I could mention her, i know how overstretched the nhs service is and she still showed friendliness and efficiency, she is a credit to rheumatology

Southend A & E Department

Southend A & E Department -
I was advised to attend an A & E department after talking to a 111 representative about chest pains.
When I arrived at Southend A & E department I inadvertently walked past some sort of screening point and proceeded directly to the main desk which was not manned. When someone eventually returned they immediately told me to join a queue at
the side of the desk. I promptly joined
18 other people and stood there for 47 minutes until only 5 people remained in front of me. From talking to another potential patient I learned to my surprise that I should have obtained a paper sheet from the first screening

stage before queuing.
I then found the correct - although obscured counter and went to
complete a questionnaire where most
of the info was already on my NHS
card already in my possession.
Armed with this info on this separate
sheet of paper I was then entitled to
rejoin the original queue that had now
since risen to 20 plus. Presumably I would then have another minimum of
47 plus minute wait to even become close to registered ? It was at this point I caught site of a whiteboard
that stated the average waiting time
was 7 hours & 12 minutes.
I would like to point out that my complaint is NOT about the waiting
times (although they do appear quite
excessive) but the fact that the poor
queuing systems, confusing methods
& incorrect information hinders an
already incompetent & needlessly
excessive process.
Ultimately I decided to take two more
paracetamol on the four hour limit &
returned home. If I'm still here & in the same amount of pain tomorrow morning I'll return as early as I can - but be much more prepared to make arrangements for an entire full day of waiting.
One more thing - at no point in the queuing timescale were seats available - I can walk all day long
( I waked 37 miles in one day for charity this time last year & was told as a 70 year old I should be proud of that )
I can sit all day long
( my job of 44 years had me sat behind a desk the majority of that
time),
But if I stand still for more than 5 to 10 minutes my hips get stiff, if I can't walk off the stiffness the pain will intensify & become agony. - I've had all the x-rays, scans etc. & I'm told I do not have any signs of arthritis or diagnosable symptoms
Anyway today's experience no doubt worsened both my physical & mental well-being & for no good reason as far as I'm concerned.

What happened to this once great hospital?

I've been a patient of Southend hospital for many reasons, over the years. I'd even say they've saved my life on more than one occasion, but something has gone wrong.
The staff are often rude, they make mistake after mistake with appointments and keep sending my appointments to my old address.
I was meant to be seen within 2 weeks, at the breast clinic, but have now been told they don't have enough staff, so clinics are frequently cancelled and I'll be seen within 4 weeks.
They just make mistake after mistake! Recently they couldn't find anything on my record about the fact that I have had 2 children, that were born there!
Unfortunately, as I can't afford to go private, it's my only option, but it's nothing like the amazing hospital it once was!

eye unit at southend…

i went to the eye unit at southend hospital yesterday for my check up. can i say that all staff where very friendly.
the reception staff where very helpful,
car park was awful drove round for 3/4 hr trying to find a space

Exemplary Service

I attended the Heart Clinic today for an outpatient appointment. I was seen on time, no over run on the clinic.

The service I received was exemplary, all the staff were friendly, kind and professional.

It’s just a shame the Tory Government don’t treat the NHS or the staff with the respect they deserve.

Outstanding service

From attending basildon A&E on December 13th 2023 to having urgent mri scan at chartwell hospital then seeing my spinal surgeon in April 2024 to having my spinal operation on May 9th 2024 I can not thank everyone involved in my treatment everyone was very professional couldn't of done enough for you, I had to stay on castle point jru ward at Southend hospital, the nurses were outstanding especially during the night when they was stretched for nurses they still had time to see you, I can not thank the staff enough who made my stay very welcome

Horrible experience

Going to hospital for any reason is stressful! Southends parking is shocking, I got there 30 minutes before and could not find a space! When I was given directions for the department they said use the lifts! Each one was occupied by trollies going down and not up, I found the stairs and finally found where I should go! I was called into the room without a hello! Just strip down to waist lie on the bed! I honestly felt like I was just a bit of meat!! No care, consideration. Horrible experience.

Visited the mental health crisis team…

Visited the mental health crisis team with my severely unwell family member . Fast prompt and understanding care team ! limited waiting time ! We were so lucky to have such professionalism and dedicated support at that time...and on going to the fantastic home care treatment team ! They are Amazing x

Southend Hospital abused my dad

One month ago my dad was unwell. We thought he was having a stroke so we called to book a doctor's appointment and the practice manager shouted down the phone at me and said the doctors at the surgery could not help call an ambulance.

So we phoned for an ambulance. They turned up and drove to the hospital at 30 miles an hour stopped at every traffic light then sat outside the hospital for about 4 hours. My dad repeatedly said I just want to go home he also said he needed to wee and the ambulance staff just said wet yourself my dad said I don't do that. He went into A&E and because my dad said I'm fine I just want to go home they sedated him and sent him to a ward.

While on that ward he was pushed and punched in the face by a healthcare assistant and the ward manager said to my brother it is no big deal the hospital did not report the assault to the police the family had to do that. No one from the hospital phoned the family and apologized. When the family phoned the hospital, the hospital said they did not want to talk to the family. I contacted PALS to complain and they did not want to know. I tried to talk to the manager of the hospital but was told there is no such person.

AMU kept my dad sedated for eight days straight. We later found out my dad fell out of bed he was then moved to another ward. My aunt and I went to see my dad and he was sitting up talking. I left to walk my aunt to the bus stop because there are no parking spaces so you have to get a bus. In the half-hour I left my dad he was laying in bed shaking with his eyes closed in the fetal position. I told the health care assistant and the staff nurse and the ward manager that there was something seriously wrong with my dad and all the staff said he was old and he was just tied. I said don't speak about my dad like that something is the matter with him and all the staff ignored me 3 hours later he had a medical emergency because the catheter they put in my dad because they did not want to take him to the toilet was blocked and he nearly died and yet again we were told 22 hours later. The staff ignored everything the family said about our dads health and they would not let the family know about any of his care or treatment and in the last 8 days he was in the hospital they stopped the family from visiting him.
The hospital did not feed my dad or give him fluids he was 10st 6Ib when he went in 21 days later he come home under 8 stone my dad had different diagnosis from several diffrent doctors and AMU Balmoral and Hockley kept my dad sedated continusly he was even sedated when he came home and the hospital likes putting nappies on every paitent and putting catheters in patients so the staff don't have to take patients to the toilet they also like to immobilising patients so they can not walk around and get excersise.
The hospital also pumped my dad full of drugs he did not need without testing him for anything and caused him a kidney injury.
There is lots more to this incedent.

So my dad came home worse than he went in.

They all need to be plesant!

I went to the A&E on 25.08.21 at around 10.30. There were only a few people there. Because of the virus, there was a young lady between the two doors, greeting people & taking their details. She was so lovely & welcoming; this was a nice change. I then saw the Doctor at the fracture clinic (Dr Muhammed Elsharkalvy?). OMG!! he could not have been nicer. He was pleasant, reassuring & very thorough. Good experience on this way, but seriously, why aren't the receptionists & other staff pleasant too? You can always smile or be kind even if you are tired!!
