Buying our first home was one of the most exciting but also nerve-wracking experiences we've ever been through — and we honestly couldn’t have done it without the incredible support from Martin Tolhurst Solicitors.

From day one, Abdul Muttalib was calm, knowledgeable, and completely reassuring. As our solicitor, he took the time to explain each stage of the conveyancing process in detail, always making sure we understood what was happening and what to expect next. He was extremely thorough and meticulous with the legal side, and we felt fully confident that nothing was being overlooked. No question ever felt too small, and his professional yet approachable manner made a real difference in putting us at ease.

A massive thank you as well to his wonderful support team — Amy, Abbie, and Lorna — who were all incredibly friendly, efficient, and on the ball throughout. Their communication was excellent; they were quick to respond to emails and phone calls, kept us regularly updated without us having to chase, and made sure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes. It was clear that they genuinely cared about our experience and were just as excited as we were to help us get across the finish line.

What we appreciated most was how personal the service felt. Despite how busy the property market can be, we never felt like just another case. Everyone we dealt with took time and care to make sure our first home purchase was handled properly — and it truly was.

I appointed Martin Tolhurst to handle the sale of my rental property as they were recommended by the estate agent I was using. They got the job done eventually but when I put my residential property up for sale also with the same estate agent I did not want to use Martin Tolhurst again.
They main reason for this was a distinct lack of a personal touch. They have an office 5 mins drive from my house so to try to expedite things instead of emailing I decided to visit the office instead. On the 3 occasions I did so I did not meet or get to speak to the solicitor who was handling my case. Despite the fact that I was paying them for this service. I felt I was not important enough for them to get up off their office chair and come to speak to me for a moment. Instead they sent a pair of very young ladies to talk to me who looked like they'd left school no more than 6 months ago. They of course knew nothing of my case so spent time walking up and down the stairs relaying messages back and forth. On one occasion of signing the contract my witness initially signed in the buyers witness place. I got him to to sign in the correct place also and took the contract to the office to see if it was acceptable or would I need a replacement. After the minions came back from upstairs they produced a new contract for me to sign. I said I would take it away and return it later that day. The senior minion replied if I signed it then and there, then she could witness it. This struck me as odd because I didn't know the girl and she didn't know me. She didn't even ask me for any ID. Not wanting to delay matters further, I just signed it there and then. She then took it away and presumably signed as a witness later. I also seemed to have an issue with the boiler installation certificate which wad causing a delay. It turned out the buyer wasn't interested in this as was intending to replace it anyway. We both emailed our respective solicitors to drop the matter and move on. I received no reply to this. So overall a disappointing experience and not one I would recommend.

Completed the house sale competently. There was room for improvement over certain aspects, but there was good comms all the way through and everything needed was done.

If I could I’d give 10 stars. Cannot rate this solicitor highly enough. Particularly Gemma, Ellie, Nicola and Anita at the gillingham branch. These ladies worked tirelessly right up until our move date. We were kept in the loop every step of the way with everything being explained to us in simpler terms. Moving and paperwork can be quite daunting but these ladies took the time to break things down and answer any questions we had.

They went above and beyond on our move day as we experienced a blip with our mortgage lender. At no fault of Martin tolhurst they took responsibility of the problem and made sure we moved on that day even working later than office hours. Constantly chasing for us and calling us every 30 minutes with an update. The compassion and care shown by these ladies was second to none. We cannot thank you enough for everything you did. We hope to never move again but if we do we know we’re to come for our conveyancing.

I would highly recommend this solicitor. Our move experience was made all the less stressful due to the dedicated service that we received throughout, both for the sale and purchase of our old and new property. The team at Martin Tolhurst always responded to all our enquiries within 1-2 hours, (on occasion out of normal office hours). Although telephone calls were not answered immediately, our backup E Mails and voice messages were responded to in the time detailed above by either E-Mail or via a direct call. Charlotte, Abbie and the team were friendly, professional and attentive to all our needs throughout the sale and purchase periods. I would use the firm again without question.

If I could give zero stars, I would. We’ve been dealing with Abbie Oswald, and I believe Hannah? As they represent the buyer of our property, and their handling of the process has been nothing short of incompetent. Despite being over four months into the sale, they only realised two days before exchange that they hadn’t verified the buyer's proof of funds—an absolutely basic requirement that should have been checked at the very start. They’ve caused repeated delays, complete ignored multiple emails in the chain, made numerous errors (including thinking our freehold house was a flat for weeks, even after having the title, offer and survey!), and have shown a shocking lack of communication and attention to detail throughout. These issues have pushed the chain to the brink of collapse (we have one week left to exchange before our purchase pulls out) and caused significant stress and uncertainty for everyone involved.

I would strongly advise anyone looking for a reliable, professional conveyancer to steer clear.

Needing a solicitor to complete paperwork at short notice for my settlement agreement, I found Giles Dobson to be extremely helpful and professional and will certainly use again.

How this company is still operating and hasn't been struck off is a miracle, my ex husband used Martin Tolhurst, so they were not my solicitor, thank the lord, but I had the misfortune of having to deal with them, as I was representing myself. This company reply so slowly, via pigeon would be faster, they are rude, unprofessional and send documents to the wrong people, which is not good in a divorce case, they seem to have mathematical problems, which I raised, but they assured me they were correct, in fact they was incorrect and this delayed matters and cost me a lose of property sale to the sum of 5k, as the case needed to go to court and my ex husband I would assume alot of extra costs, to be told by the Judge, yes these figures do not add up, it's something when a solicitor can't add up and can't keep private documents safe. Please don't be fooled by all the good reviews not all the solicitors are doing a good job at this firm, some need to return to university for more training. I feel very sorry for the young girls they send out to deal with the unhappy clients, because you never get to see the rude unprofessional solicitor, not sure why, it's not like they are replying to any emails. I am now looking at buying another property & looking at other reviews for Martin Tolhurst, Wards seem to like using this company even though you have alot of bad reviews, so not that I would even consider using your firm, Wards will not convince me to use you even for a quick sale, in fact I wouldn't use Martin Tolhurst if you was free.
