Hasn't been great

My overall uni experience at Herts hasn't been great, and have decided to leave after 2 years of study. If your looking for a uni with night life, look else where. The onsite night club is usually packed and expensive to get into. And there are few pubs or places in Hatfield to go to. Also don't rely on the buses they don't run or turnup on time.

At uni I had problems with my health, and I relied on the onsite medical centre a lot. Unfortunately it was very difficult to use, and there were only a few appointments a day for the hundreds of students on campus. Most times I wasn't taken seriously even though I showed symptoms of respiratory problems a countless number of times. The hospital is a 20min bus ride away and you can wait up to a month for a blood test so keep that in mind.

Through my studies I stayed on campus. Mostly it was fine but I had problems with Herts breaking contract on multiple occasions. 1st year they didn't give my flat 2 working ovens so had to put up with 1 between 12 of us. In 2nd year they stopped cleaning the stairs in the flat. They also don't fix, repair or replace things properly. Now they have tried to charge me £165 for a new mattress when I left this year. The mattress was in the same condition as when I 1st arrived. Just be warned a 1cm stain matters apparently, so report it when you 1st arrive!!!

My course unfortunately was also a mess and I spent most of my time self learning. I studied Robotics & AI, which although interesting and the lecturers lovely, It wasn't structured or organised at all well. Core fundamentals were either missed, rushed or taught completely wrong. A majority of lecture slides were poorly written with little explanation. Modules didn't seam to relate or build on one and other. Some lectures were also long and didnt allow enough breaks which broke uni policy. There were continous hiccups and complications in my course and outside of it, so I eventually decided to leave and continue my education elsewhere.

Practical learning and great community

Studying for my MBA at Herts was a fantastic experience. The staff are experts in their fields and brought real-world insight into every topic. We also heard from industry speakers who offered fresh perspectives, helping us apply our learning directly to our roles. The course structure was flexible enough to fit around full-time work, and the staff were always supportive and understanding of the pressures we faced. I gained knowledge that genuinely changed how I think and what I deliver at work, and it’s opened up new opportunities I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Most important, though, were the friendships I built with my cohort... we supported each other through the tough times (assignment deadlines and tricky modules!) and celebrated the highs together.

10/10 experience for an international student

As an international applicant I was supported by the admissions team throughout the application process. The updates were regular and clear which I really appreciated. My experience studying at Herts was nothing short of perfect. The academic staff were very supportive and my time at Herts was honestly very enjoyable.

Parking Penalties

My 18 year old son had gone everyday in May and June during his A levels to the University of Hertfordshire Library to study. The parking was set up on the First Parking App that the University has contracted and the payment made each day automatically for all the times he visited in May. On 1st June the car details disappeared from the app which resulted in three days where the parking costs did not go through and he was issued with three separate parking fines by First Parking. He appealed with evidence to show that all the days in May the payments had gone through to show that the intent and action to pay was made and for some reason beyond his control, the car details were not on the app at the beginning of June and the payments did not go through. He got a rejection for the three days (1st - 3rd June) resulting in an 18 year old student studying for his A levels being levied with a total of £240 fine.
A request for help from the University was rejected that this was a matter for the parking contractor and not them. The university should take a principled approach to supporting students and learning rather than financial orientated approach.

Not a great experience with Information Technology

At the time I started my 3rd year of the Information Technology course (BSc), I had been warned by some of the Student Staff and my Seniors (who were doing their masters) about the person in charge of the Information Security module (6COM) and how horrible their learning experience. This was at the beginning of semester A, so the fact that multiple students had told me this was rather concerning.

An absolutely horrible marker treats the students with disrespect - despite demanding respect, frequently contradicts what she says, making last minute changes and blaming the students for failing to pay attention, and acting as if it was set in the first place, and her module page looks absolutely horrid. Content is split into pages on Canvas and looks cluttered. Such a waste of time. She frequently talks about her life in every lecture and fails to complete her lectures, despite the fact that she has a 2-hour block dedicated to her lectures. Again, she fails to complete a lecture despite having a 2-hour block.

She shows patience with internationals students, however, given the amount of money they pay towards tuition, the teaching they get from them is awful. She has expressed that she believes home students are lazy.

The teaching standard for the course was alright for the course of 3 years but there were standouts lecturers like in the User Experience and Programming modules. However, the level of frustration and stress that came from going through this module alone ruins it and I can't recommend future students to do this course.

It is a shame that nothing will come out of it. This has been happening for a while and clearly this will continue. This is disrespectful to home students and especially international students, who are already paying an outrageous amount to study at the uni.

You will be scammed, especially International Students

Did a course in the Computer Science department. The money you spend on this University is a waste, you are better off looking into another uni.

The teaching standard has been progressively getting worse over the years. One of the lecturers doesn't even put up content on Canvas for her modules properly. They are separated into pages and it looks like a mess.

International students - DO NOT GO HERE! Do not go to this university. Many of the staff members ,that are not part of the academic team, have admitted that the University is scamming international students and it is not worth it for them.

Buses to the Uni are horrible and commuting is getting progressively worse. Unless you live nearby, you will highly likely miss your lectures or seminars. Nothing has been really done to remedy the situation but only an increase in bus fees.

If I could give 0 stars i would

I moved from wales to here and it was the biggest mistake of my life. The teachers were the only ok part of the university the rest are shocking. The security guards are horrible, the finance team are APPAULING and overall they just don’t care about their students whatsoever. There was confusion with my first 2 payments and they failed to contact me until they had put me 5k in debt… then they thought they would give a gentle reminder that I had to pay that in a lump sum. as I am a student I wasn’t able too I went back and fourth for MONTHS asking for a payment plan but it never happened just because they wanted to keep adding £50 a month to the debt until they were satisfied with 6k leaving me having to get my parents involved and leave us struggling by having to pay the debt in a lump sum otherwise they would sent debt collectors to our door. I know so many people they steal money off if you do one thing I hope it’s that you never attend this shocking university.

This is opinion from an employee: Please save your money and don't go to this University. It became very dangerous, there is lots of drug activity among students, even security officers are taking drugs and coming drunk to work. In accomodation you will experience robbery and sexual abuse. The quality of students is very poor because most of them are homeless coming from overseas and study just to get their visas. This University has absolutely no standards and accepts homeless students because they pay for their fees. There is a lot a lot of racism and discrimination especially directed towards Christian people. It's like a survival camp- try not to get stabbed, raped or involved in drug dealings.

University of Hertfordshire is the…

September 2019-2020:-University of Hertfordshire is the worst university I ever attended. It's a mirage and a fluke. This university of Hertfordshire will drain your mental health wellness. I was on fully paid meritorious LL.M scholarship by the Federal Government of Nigeria, so I could not fantom why the racial discrimination was so intense

1) I started experiencing intense stalking within 2 weeks of my arrival on this university's campus

2) Within 2 months of commencing lectures, Racist asian-british lecturer bullied and harassed me despite my voluntary executive service as course rep. She threatened me in class saying "WHAT IF YOU FAIL?". She would loudly retort at my attempt to answer lecture question by shouting "You are absolutely wrong". At another time, she commenced lectures with the prevalence of "sex-for-grades and money-for-grades narratives" in the United Kingdom higher institutions. I had suicidal ideation as a result of her harassment. I was informed one of the university undergraduate had earlier killed himself by jumping on the train rail track. This lecturer was foisted on me as my supervisor. She resumed her bullying, intimidation
and harrassments in a passively aggressive way through her comments on my dissertation. I requested for a simple change of supervisor due to the emotional trauma she caused and was causing me. My application was rejected despite my concerns. As a result, I didn't finish my dissertation. Her words were traumatising. My systolic blood pressure rose to 174 within 2 months of her unprovoked lecture-induced bullying

3) Within 4 months of my arrival at this university of Hertfordshire, specifically January 2020, my on-campus accommodation room was invaded and searched in my absence on a Sunday night-out studying in the library. As if that was insufficient, the next day, I was falsely accused of being in possession of illegal substances (cannabis) despite my status as a practicing female CHRISTIAN and a NIGERIAN/AFRICAN Lawyer

4) In December 2020, during Covid-19 government lockdown and social distancing, I tried to apply for my PhD program in another country, a university of Hertfordshire male lecturer breached my statutory Data Protection Privacy Rights and informed a 3rd party fellow student about my private plans. On January 19, 2021, the student inturn informed me, she specifically mentioned that the male lecturer had divulged my private plans to her, she was piqued that I didn't inform her of my private plans. I was gobsmacked. When I asked her how she got to see the lecturer (because I didn't have that leverage in my capacity as a course rep), she went mute on me till date. Since 2021, I have not been able to recover from the trauma caused by this breach of statutory fiduciary trust. I have not applied for my PhD program since 2021 despite emerging with a Distinction

5) Date of experience is actually 2019/2020 academic session. This awful experiences was the thresholds and platform for other awful experiences I had on british soil in the United Kingdom

Scammers

If there is zero star I could rate them that, this school is a scam, they take peoples money without refunding, they give excuses not to refund the money. THEY SCAMMED ME OF 7000 dollars. If you are an international student avoid this school at all cost!!!! SCAMMERS

Arrogant manipulators

This University has a double standard when dealing with UK and foreign students, where those from the UK were handed their leaving documentation eight months sooner than those who UH views as “strangers” and treats them as total dirt. University does not offer any appropriate assistance for students with disabilities. They do not know how to deal with it. They treated a condition related to the eye issue in same manners as they treat dyslexia - which is extremely substandard and would be illegal even in the third world countries. Their administration is abusive and extremely hostile. They dealt with one issue for five years, to have it all swept - with their very corrupted allies - under table. They are arrogant, behave like semigods and are full of themselves. They are misjudgemental liers who miscontrue what truly happened, and they are also hard core manipulators. Absolutely indecent and abusive!!! Their behaviour lacks dignity.

WORST UNIVERSITY

WORST UNIVERSITY
Had problem financially to pay my last term fees and informed them that within a week I will be able to pay it off but they blocked me from student access right before my exam and when I paid it off it took them some time to unblock it. Hence I did not have no study material. However I managed to do well in my exam but my tutor called and said you did not pass and should have paid your fees before hand.
Had to resit in exam . University support team is rubbish. All that for just to waste my money and time.

Excellent teaching, abysmal admin

I am in my final year of BEd Primary Education with QTS at Herts and my experience has been fantastic. The education department really care about their students and I have formed an extremely strong bond with my tutors. I have struggled with mental health during my time here (due to COVID and other personal issues) and my tutors and been incredibly supportive and motivating, I would have dropped out without them. They answer my emails in good time, support my disability and constantly check up on me especially in the past when I struggled to make it to a few lectures. The quality of teaching is impeccable and I've learnt so much in the last 3 years which will be very valuable in my career.

However, the rest of the university is very poor. Student wellbeing do nothing to help you. When having issues with unclean and disrespectful flatmates they could not resolve the issue; instead telling me to move into a worse accommodation. I had to stick out the rest of the year living in filthy conditions because my flatmates were never reprimanded despite consistent reports. The university are incompetent when it comes to communication between departments, and if you have an issue no-one will deal with it, they will just send you round and round in circles to different people because no-one is capable of resolving it.

Overall, I have enjoyed my time here, but only because my course and the tutors are incredible. I can't say the same for other courses.

Mediocre teaching standards and very very poor career service

I was not even offered a little post-graduation support in terms of career support/guidance from the Aerospace Department and the University as a whole as I was not finding any work related to my degree and in general. This caused me a great deal of stress.

When I wrote to the Aerospace Department and the University Chancellor out of despair highlighting all this, I was given feeble advice which was utterly ineffective and unconvincing, and when I challenged this meagre advice I was threatened with legal action. This upset me even more and made me feel more hopeless.

A very dissatisfied Alumni.

University of Hertfordshire Finance H.R Bad Experience

As a staff member with over 20+ years experience in Accounts in London, i had the worst experience at University of Hertfordshire in my 10 months there.
I suffered from a nervous breakdown and depression and within 5 days of returning to work was given my P45.

They even deducted my holiday pay without my permission and not given any notice pay.
I have never come across such discriminatory practices by H.R and Finance.
I have set up a new group to fight against discrimination in universities.
Some of the staff i met were really friendly but the manner i was treated by H.R and my manager breached every regulation.

Herts ONLINE: Inconsiderate Application Process

**Specific to UofHerts ONLINE**
I wanted to share a recent experience I had with U of Herts Online's application process for their MSc in Computer Science program. My hope is that this can serve as a warning for other prospective students.

I applied for the 1-year full-time MSc in Computer Science programme, only to find out *after* completing the lengthy application process that the program has been discontinued. The twist? I was offered a spot in their 2-year part-time program instead, which does not align with my academic and professional goals.

What frustrated me the most was the fact that the University didn't inform me about this major change until after I had already submitted my application, along with additional required documents. To make matters worse, some of these documents required certified translations, costing me both time and money.

To add insult to injury, the University of Herts Online website still advertises the 1-year full-time program, potentially misleading other students like myself. This seems like a significant oversight on their part.

I sent them an email in response to the offer letter email, laying out my concerns and suggesting they update their website to prevent this from happening to other prospective students. Their response? A simple "thanks for the feedback," with no further action, apologies or explanation. This left me feeling unheard and frustrated.

The lack of an adequate response from the University has done little to instill confidence in their administration. If you're considering applying to UHerts Online, be cautious and make sure to double-check whether the program you're interested in is actually available. And even if you do encounter issues, don't expect a satisfactory resolution based on my experience. I would hate for anyone else to go through what I did.
