I should have heeded the red flag…
I should have heeded the red flag during my initial discovery call, where the accountant was literally putting his button down shirt on (over another shirt) while I was joining the call. Clearly he had just rolled out of bed.
Overall, my experience with GTA Accounting was extremely disappointing, stressful, and ultimately unacceptable. I would not recommend their services to anyone.
The problems went far beyond poor communication. There were repeated errors that I brought to their attention and asked to have corrected, yet they were not properly addressed. I found myself having to review the work of the accounting professionals I was paying, identify problems myself, repeatedly follow up, and push for corrections.
The most unacceptable part of my experience occurred with my S Corporation return. As the extension deadline approached, there were still issues that needed to be corrected. I repeatedly reached out for assistance and eventually my emails simply stopped being answered. Keep in mind, you won't have a dedicated accountant assigned to you- your calls and emails go into the pipeline and you get who you get and for me it was someone different almost every time.
Anyways, with an IRS filing deadline rapidly approaching, I was left scrambling at the eleventh hour to find another accounting professional who could step in, review everything, correct the outstanding issues, and get my S Corporation return filed before the extension deadline.
That is not a position any client should be put in by a professional accounting firm.
There were also significant issues surrounding the guidance I received regarding my S Corporation reporting and shareholder basis. My business reporting was changed from Schedule C treatment to S Corporation/K-1 reporting, yet I was not advised at the time that additional information regarding contributions, distributions, shareholder loans, or shareholder basis might need to be established and maintained. I later found myself asking about Form 7203 and basis issues on my own, of which they could not provide me.
My concern isn't simply whether one particular form was technically required in a particular year. My concern is that I hired accounting professionals specifically because I am not a CPA. I should not have to already know the tax issue, form number, or question I need to ask before receiving appropriate guidance.
Throughout my experience, I never felt that anyone was proactively looking at the whole picture. Instead, I felt like I had to discover problems myself, ask why something had or had not been done, and then chase the firm for answers or corrections.
When I raised legitimate concerns, the responses often felt more focused on explaining why something was not their responsibility than on taking ownership and helping resolve the issue.
I completely lost confidence in GTA Accounting and would not use their services again and I hope you will save yourself the headache as well.
