Had great advice from Steve C who helped us buy some boots. He was extremely knowledgeable and very friendly - as were the rest of the staff. Good range of products too.

No email to say my item was in. I was passing the shop and went in to enquire as it was days overdue from what the original order had said. 1st assistant went to look, came back saying not there. Another assistant said wait I'll check online. She said it was due to be returned from shop to warehouse that very day. She kindly again went to look and found the package. Thank goodness for someone with some common sense, sorry I did not note her name.

Excellent advice about walking boots from Steve C at the Chester store. I told him what I was looking for, he suggested the most suitable options, and the first pair I tried was exactly what I wanted.

Today I went into Chester GoOutdoorsExpress and I was immediately very politely greeted by a young man (sorry don't know his name). I explained that I was having a problem getting my member's discount online.
He referred me to the store manager Paul who was able to assist me with purchasing the items I was looking for in the store. He checked the stock availability and then went and located the items for me. So I was delighted with the service I received.
I understand however that there is a problem in getting member's prices when purchasing online and this needs to be addressed.

I needed some walking shorts. Have you ever tried buying these in winter? Most outlets response….its winter, they don’t come in til April….( not sure why you can’t buy them all year round!)
So, I wasn’t filled with optimism upon entering another outdoor store!
Anyway, despite there being nothing I wanted on the shop floor, the very helpful Tracey went upstairs and came down with exactly what I needed.
The items were on sale, and got members discount.
So very pleased and surprised with the shop and excellent customer service

I recently visited the Chester branch and my experience was unfortunately quite disappointing.

On arrival, the first staff member I encountered greeted me politely, which gave a good first impression. I went upstairs to look at some items and, as usual, was asked if I needed help. I knew what I was looking for, so I said I was fine and continued browsing. Given that it’s a fairly pricey store, I took my time comparing options, which I think is completely reasonable.

Shortly after, another staff member approached and asked if we were okay. I again said yes. However, instead of leaving us to browse, he stood very close by at the desk watching, which felt uncomfortable and unnecessary — almost as if we were being monitored. It made the atmosphere feel tense rather than welcoming.

I decided to ask him a few questions about the products, but unfortunately he didn’t seem very knowledgeable and responded with abrupt “I don’t know” type answers. It wasn’t very helpful, especially from someone working in an outdoor store who had come upstairs to “help.”

When I asked if I could pay upstairs, he rather abruptly said no. I then went downstairs to pay, but was told there was an ID requirement for part of the purchase. It would have been helpful if this had been explained earlier when staff saw what I was carrying, rather than at the till. The way it was communicated also felt unfriendly and dismissive, which ultimately made me decide not to buy anything at that time because the situation felt quite hostile.

I returned a few hours later to purchase the items I could buy without ID. I checked first with staff to avoid any confusion, then collected the items. Again, I received some unpleasant looks from certain staff members, which made me feel uncomfortable. At the till, the final staff member avoided eye contact, ignored attempts at conversation, and barely acknowledged me beyond a mumbled “bye.” Customer service should feel welcoming, not awkward or cold.

Overall, while the store has good products, the customer service on this visit made the experience feel unwelcoming and uncomfortable. I hope the branch can improve on staff communication and customer interaction in future.

My husband and I both needed new walking boots. The salesman (Steve C) was extremely helpful, patient and gave us some excellent advice. We will definitely shop there again in the future for all our walking gear.

We were helped out by Steve. C in store today, he was very helpful and took the time to answer all our questions and make some very good recommendations.
We left with a new tent, a brilliant rucksack and a renewed sense of adventure! Camping season can’t come soon enough!
