Got my downstairs ceiling removed due to a toilet leak. New ceiling installed and skimmed. 100% it looks super

I agreed with this person to carry out a job and paid an advance deposit. Unfortunately, the work was never completed, and I am still waiting for my deposit to be refunded after three months.
Based on my experience, I would not recommend using this service, especially if you are asked to pay an advance.

Do not hire! Scam artist, confidence trickster, liar, delusional and incompetent. Even if you're desperate, do not hire Dermot.

I saw Dermot’s van outside our apartment block and asked him to do some small jobs in our apartment such as painting our ensuite ceiling, putting up hooks and slide bolts on doors. The slide bolts he supplied were poor quality and broke. He broke one of the hook racks and generally displayed poor workmanship. When He reviewed the ensuite ceiling again he said it needed to be skimmed first and requested money to buy materials. He never returned or refunded us for this. Unfortunately I revoluted him for paint and materials he’d need to skim the ceiling. When I WhatsApped him He’d say He’ll return and give a date. He also said at one stage that there was a funeral. I have never left a negative review of anyone or any business before because it simply isn’t the type of person I am. However, after our experience, I feel I have a responsibility to warn others.

Dermot started our flooring and tiling in April but attended only intermittently. From the beginning, it was clear the workmanship was below an acceptable standard. We questioned whether he was capable of carrying out the work correctly and gave him multiple opportunities to put things right. Instead, we were left with a floor that was chipped, marked, unfinished and cut so poorly that even the basic lines were uneven. The tiling was also left chipped, damaged and incomplete.

I worked 12- to 13-hour shifts to pay for what should have been an exciting project in our new family home. Instead, we have been left with stress, disappointment, financial loss and the cost of having to repair and replace work that should never have been left in this condition.

Throughout the job, there were repeated excuses, broken promises and misleading assurances. We were far more patient than we should have been, and giving repeated chances was a mistake.

After this experience, I discovered that ours was not an isolated case. I found that others have also reported similar experiences and that legal action, including Small Claims Court proceedings, has been taken against him. I would strongly encourage anyone considering hiring him to do thorough research before handing over any money.

Based on our experience, I cannot recommend Dermot. This review reflects our genuine experience and is intended to help others avoid the same stress and expense that my family has endured.

This is a reply to John Coleman, The maintenance man is not my partner, I get him to do jobs for me on the odd occasions. So how dare you say he is my partner, you have no right to slander my name this is an offence by law. I have no idea who you are, so I suggest you keep your comments to yourself. I would recommend The Maintenance Man for any job.

ALSO CATHERINE GORE IS HIS PARTNER BELIVE NOTHING THAT WOMAN PUTS UP. She put that review up about herringbone floor to have a dig at me that’s the floor he ruined on usThis man is an absolute SCAMMER stay well clear of him. He tried to lay a wooden floor for us and just wracked the whole thing he can’t even cut a straight line not sure if he used sew or his teeth when he decided to show up he was gone 12:30 and all he done was drank coffee and smoked in the house always left the house in bits and never cleaned up after himself so unprofessional and then was asking for money all the time. People stay well clear of this man. It was two small jobs he had to do here since April and not one of them is finished he used super glue to stick our floor down.

Got some decking installed and fencing really happy how it turned out

Horrible experience!

A bathroom renovation that began in January 2026 was repeatedly delayed, poorly executed, and ultimately left in a defective and incomplete state. I was given multiple assurances that the job would be finished “mid-week” or on specific dates, but these deadlines were repeatedly missed.

Throughout the job, he repeatedly demanded additional payments upfront while the work was still incomplete, and at one stage stated he would not finish the work unless further payment was made. At the end of the job, he also attempted to request more money than originally agreed despite the ongoing issues.

The quality of work was unacceptable. The floor was installed incorrectly, tiles were poorly laid and now move under weight, grout is already cracking, and silicone sealing was not completed. Attempts to fix the issues caused further damage, including drilling through the ceiling below and a shower pipe.

Despite several return visits, the underlying problems—particularly a creaking and unstable floor—were never resolved. The job was eventually declared complete, however major defects remained, including gaps in the flooring and unfinished areas. On the final day he broke the toilet by pushing it in. Caused a leak that he tried to blame on the plumber

Professional standards were also poor, with cigarette waste left in the garden and a lack of basic cleanliness while working inside the property.

The work will now need to be fully redone by another contractor.

Dermot Flanagan is a deceitful scammer. Had him in for some painting, showed up almost randomly. Also took some of my equipment (claimed his partner, Catherine Gore - note she also is one of the few to provide a positive "review" - put one of my painting poles in his van..). Had two deaths in the family (also a common storyline here and on Facebook reviews), a wedding, and his vans brakes "needed doing" all adding delays, painful. Ended up after constant chasing getting painting done in 2 months and left jagged lines all over the place, brush marks etc. had to redo most of it ourselves. Constantly asking for money without showing up too, it's clear he's stretched but to constantly fib about it and then deliver a poor quality job. He seems to set up under new trading names every few months

Scam artist! Avoid! Previously known as Handy Hands in 22 and is a well known conman, MO is starting jobs, extracting as many funds as possible, and then leaving the job either a state, needing to be redone or not come back at all. 23 Chased for almost a full year for money back.

Promised to fit a bathroom in 6 days, 3 weeks later there was nothing done.
Would come when he felt like it, maybe 2 days out of the week, spend more time smoking and drinking coffee than working. Arrived at 8 left by 12/1
Damaged 300 euro worth of tiles, pulled out the bath and left us with no shower for 3 weeks.
We have a leak in the bathroom now, broke the shower, ruined the carpet on stairs and landing.
Kept asking for money even though he hadn’t done anything.
Tried to tile and they are crooked and uneven, sacked him that day
What he’s done is theft
And obviously has many different accounts on here to give good reviews.
Avoid at all costs

Great worker, on time, tidy and trustworthy

Dermot completely transformed my sitting room. He managed to install a fireplace, electric fire, and tv and hide all the annoying cables and wires in the wall. He was so patient when I had to run out for a few minutes. I honestly couldn’t recommend him enough and have already booked him to do another job for me!

Dermot was punctual arrived on time on the agreed date and was very professional. Liked the work completed

Dermot did a fantastic job in my home , he was punctual, reliable , organised and has a great work ethic. He retiled my kitchen which was more affordable than i would have thought i would highly recommend these services to anyone!! thanks again!

This man pops up every now and again with a new company name. Complete scam artist. AVOID!!!!!!!! Takes your money and doesn't do or finish the work!!
