Trying to force me to pay for use. Really annoying. I will migrate to other free sites
Comments Section overtaken by Trolls.
The Comments Section is completely over taken by Trolls.
One Troll in Particular makes very offensive and racist comments all day every day, gets banned frequently, sometimes multiple times daily for years now, but immediately respawns with a new a new account and starts repeating the same offensive comments.
Then there is the less offensive multi-account troll that busts himself trying to be the first comment on every article and who will say anything to get likes.
He used to operate accounts called "Frank McCarty", "Buster Lawless" and "Tim Waltz", that got banned and now still operates a fake female account called 'Mary Linton' ( a character from a computer game ) and at least two others called "Shep the Sheepdog" and "Terence Cunningham".
He doesn't even bother to change the way he writes to hide that they the same. He generally uses these accounts to bully and troll other genuine commentators.
This troll flip-flops on what he says too, from making hundreds of comments praising Trump with likes of "President of Peace" and "Juggernaut of Peace" to now constantly calling Trump the "Tangerine Sex Offender". One day he's all 'Slava Ukrania" next day he's giving out about Zelenesky. One day he's claiming to be some sort of mechanic, next day an ex "veteran". Its total Walter Mitty bargain basement trolling. Its absolutely ridiculous, but he gets away with it. When genuine people call out the ridiculous 'Mary Linton' comments, he then reports those as being misogynistic, in an effort to get them removed, which is the whole reason for him in creating a fake 'female' account.
He has even left reviews here with his "Shep the Sheepdog" and "Tim Walz" names to continue this bullying and trolling of another commentator.
I left this review after I saw his fake review ( that he constantly brings up in comments on The Journal ) that was intended to just continue his petty bullying and trolling of another commentator with the same lies they do in the comments section.
The Journal are doing noting to remove these obvious trolls that break their own rules for commenting.
Very few genuine commentators left and getting fewer, soon all will be left is trolls .
You reap what you sow.
News independence is good
News independence is good, but fed up being shunted into paying for content. If it’s free it’s free, but stop muddying the water and pushing readers to pay,
Brennie's cesspit
Rubbish site, just one troll, Brendan o brien, using loads of different profiles to talk to himself, site needs moderation badly
Inconsistent reporting and toxic…
Inconsistent reporting and toxic comments.
One troll rules supreme
Used to be a great news source, sadly descended into a second rate "X". One troll, brendan o brien, more or less owns the site, he's on there 24/7 slandering, insulting & trolling away over every article. Pity really, as it once was a great entertaining & educational website. Very few genuine posters these days, just two or three trolls vying for the most thumbs ups. The funny thing is the site is bombarded with begging requests for subscriptions yet no on treats it with any seriousness. It's really just a cesspit, ok for a giggle now and again. Best avoided
Annoying ads
Always had the journal as my main news source for irish news. It was very annoying when nearly every comment section was disabled but now with these ads popping up covering the whole page ive uninstalled the app. Couldn't have made it more annoying and I hope it fails in the near future
Worse than "X"
Tried this website recently..... Wow, it's just trolls insulting other trolls. There is one obvious ringleader, Brendan o brien'.....if you're not in his ' camp' you'll be attacked mercilessly. Ger little actual debate or discussion of the articles...just schoolyard rubbish & heinous insults...best AVOIDED

Now a comment platform for MAGA-wanna-be blowhards
The content is fine, often with angles and op-eds you don't get anywhere else. A great range of material, and regular updates. But it's become a comment platform for MAGA-wanna-be blowhards, hate-mongers, racists, and the "Ireland is full" crowd. Ireland is full of far-right blowhards on the Journal. Humourless, dull, sickening, nasty. The owners of this platform need to take action before it goes the way of Broadsheet.ie. Avoid it. Introducing the thumbs down feature will make no difference. Trolls need validation. A thumbs-down is engagement with such sad cases.
Woke establishment propaganda
An absolute cringe fest of indoctrinated DCU interns thinking they are hard hitting journalists. They are the complete opposite, operating in an overton window between left and hard left. Extremely biased and sanctimonious. May aswell the government itself.
Down but not out.
The site was once a strong source of news, current affairs, and sports coverage, sometimes even offering stories you wouldn’t find elsewhere. Unfortunately, in recent years it has gone downhill. The comment sections are often dominated by aimless squabbles, while the content itself feels stale or recycled from other outlets.
That said, the site isn’t beyond saving. With more active moderation and an investment in fresh journalism, encouraging hungry, up-and-coming reporters to go out and find original stories rather than rehashing old ones, TheJournal.ie could regain its place as a valuable and informative resource. It used to be good, and with the right effort, it could be again.
Great reporting, ruined by multi-account trolls
TheJournal.ie has great news, current affairs, sports, and other coverage, some of which is unique. Access to the content (Irish and International) is free. The staff writing is professional, backed by syndicated material, but there is an overreliance on stock imagery. The reader polls are fun and topical. However, the comments section is a cesspit of multi-account toxic trolling, personal nastiness, and deliberate provocation, some of it extremely offensive, with no holds barred. Devoid of common sense and decency, the failure of the Journal management and owners to moderate comments in response to its content means the credibility of editorial decisions and commitment to facts is compromised. Best avoided.
they are fine
they are fine. free to access and not behind a paywall
Don't believe the moaners…
Don't believe the moaners with their right wing agendas, who love to complain about 'woke' this and that. It's good at what it does, not great but good.
'Some' people like to complain about their views not being aired. The Journal is a private company and has the right to publish comments if it wishes. A newspaper does not have to publish every letter to the editor they receive, do they? No, they edit.
Very good at breaking Irish news, too frequent with copy and paste sources, some annoying content but overall a good and trustworthy news service.
A foghorn spouting woke liberal…
A foghorn spouting woke liberal propoganda, readers comments only accepted that endorse and promote their lefty doctrine. Ideal for lefty moonie cult members for a love in
Brilliant website, very open and honest
Brilliant website, zero moderation or oversight.ideal for pushing private agendas.
Establishment rag
A bit of a joke of a "news" outlet, comments closed on any news they dont want real people opinions on, shill writers pushing the gov narrative constantly.....today being a perfect example re: Tucker Carlson and Conor Macgregor meeting.....disgusting rag that has the audacity to constantly have the begging bowl out!
I love the journalism
I love the journalism and commentary by Brendon on Brien, king gay
And happy to read the pro trans and gay views defended. A powerful tool for democracy.
