Absolutely horrible stay at the rental house.

1. Primary Entry & Access Hazards:

Jammed Main Front Door: The main front door would not open properly, creating an immediate accessibility issue upon arrival and compromising a primary entry and exit point.

Hazardous Side Entry Access: Because of the front door issue, guests were forced to navigate steep, narrow outdoor stairs crowded with 2–3 foot overgrown weeds, live plants, and dead vegetation. Opening the outward-swinging screen door while carrying luggage required stepping backward down the incline, posing a severe fall risk.

Yellowjacket Nest: Active yellowjackets were nesting directly at the entryway and flew into my son's face upon check-in.

2. Critical Life-Safety & Electrical Hazards:

Unmounted Smoke Detector: The smoke alarm was not properly installed on the ceiling or wall; it was simply resting on top of the microwave. This is especially concerning given that the kitchen lacks an exhaust vent hood above the stove to clear smoke and grease when cooking.

Inaccessible Fire Extinguisher: The fire extinguisher was stored on top of the refrigerator, completely out of reach for shorter guests during an emergency.

Blocked Emergency Egress: The window in the upstairs kids' bedroom was completely seized shut and could not be opened, removing a required emergency escape route in the event of a fire.

Audible Electrical Buzzing: A light switch located between the pantry and basement door produced an audible electrical buzzing sound when turned on, indicating potential internal arcing or a wiring defect.

Hazardous Extension Cord Setup: Upstairs electrical outlets are extremely scarce. The primary bedroom relied on an improper extension cord powering multiple bedside lamps from a single wall plug, creating an electrical overload risk.

Recessed Outlet: The stairwell outlet is set too deep inside the wall casing, preventing a nightlight from plugging in to illuminate the unlit stairs at night.

Insecure Windows: A ground-floor living room window failed to lock properly, presenting a home security risk.

3. HVAC Failures & Medical Impact:

Faulty Air Conditioning & Ductwork: The central AC system failed to properly cool the house during 90°+ weather due to restricted ductwork. The dining room vent was the only vent in the home blowing cold air; airflow from all other vents was barely noticeable.

Impact on Required Medical Equipment (CPAP): Despite the box fans provided, the upstairs stayed uncomfortably hot all week, made worse by the jammed kids' window preventing cross-ventilation. This extreme heat made it impossible for me to wear my required medical CPAP machine at night to sleep, severely impacting my health, sleep quality, and overall well-being.

4. Structural, Plumbing & Hygiene Concerns:

Flexing Staircase Tread: Near the top of the main staircase, one of the wooden floorboards flexes significantly under weight and feels structurally compromised/caving in—a major fall and trip hazard.

Defective Downstairs Shower: The showerhead was connected via a hose to the tub spout and held on the wall by a suction-cup mount. When turned on, water sprayed horizontally straight across the shower onto the opposite wall rather than downward into the tub.

Broken Upstairs Sink Knob: In the upstairs powder room, the cold water knob was detached/loose, requiring guests to pin down the entire fixture base to operate it.

Broken Dishwasher Track: The top rack of the dishwasher was missing an end stopper, causing the weighted rack to slide completely off the track when pulled out.

Pantry & Interior Hygiene: The narrow pantry shelves were oily and greasy, and cleaning tools (vacuum, broom, mop) were stored directly alongside food areas. Window tracks throughout the house were dirty and filled with dead bugs and spiderwebs.

Unsanitary Basement: The basement had a strong musty odor, dead bugs on the floor, live bugs under the fan, and spiderwebs in the window wells.

Unwashed Exterior & Overgrowth: The outdoor deck and dining table were unwashed, and the siding had a heavy buildup of spiderwebs, dead leaves, and snails. Furthermore, looking out the dining room picture window, all you see are 2–3 foot weeds and dead plants.

5. Listing Inaccuracies & Disruptions:

Incorrect Bedroom Count: The listing advertised a 3-bedroom home, but the property actually contains 4 bedrooms (including an unlisted upstairs room with two twin beds).

Chore-Based Check-in Instructions: The welcome binder instructed arriving guests may have to fold laundry left in the dryer and unload the dishwasher upon arrival.

Unannounced Septic Pumping: Early one morning, a commercial septic truck arrived unannounced to pump tanks just feet outside a downstairs bedroom window.
