On July 8, 2026, I called what I believed was the official Medicare phone number because I needed help with a provider that had been illegally attempting to bill me. I specifically asked the representative, Shannon Silva, if I had reached Medicare because I thought I had called the wrong number. Instead of directing me to Medicare, she told me she could help me with everything Medicare would do, leading me to believe she could address my issue.
I explained that I am a Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) and that my psychiatric provider had been demanding payment for Medicare cost-sharing. Rather than recognizing this as a Medicare compliance issue, Shannon repeatedly told me Medicare only pays 80% and encouraged me to enroll in an Anthem Medicare Advantage plan. She also minimized my concerns about prior authorizations, even after I explained I had previously gone weeks without an important psychiatric medication because of prior authorization delays.
The next day I contacted the actual Medicare hotline. Medicare immediately escalated my complaint and explained that, as a QMB beneficiary, providers are prohibited by federal law from billing me for Medicare deductibles, copays, or coinsurance. This was the assistance I had been seeking all along.
I canceled the Anthem plan before it became effective.
My complaint is not about Medicare Advantage plans. It is that I believe SelectQuote misled me into believing I was speaking with someone who could handle my Medicare issue instead of directing me to Medicare, and then used my distress to sell an insurance product that did not address my actual problem.
I also attempted to speak with a manager afterward but was unable to reach one or receive a callback.
I believe SelectQuote should better train its representatives to recognize QMB billing issues and direct consumers to Medicare when appropriate, rather than treating a federal Medicare compliance issue as a sales opportunity.
I was referred to this company by calling 1 800 Medicare. I thought I was in good hands.

Andrew explained my options in an easy to understand manner and after I told him what I needed the most help with he got me everything I wanted and needed and saved me the most money possible. You only get one chance to get it right so your not penalized or stuck with a plan that doesn't fit your needs. I can honestly say that Andrew saved me in more ways than I can explain and he will be there for me in the future. Great personality, great knowledge, great guy I highly recommend him to anyone looking to get it right the first time and save you money.
