Lack of Action to Enforce Ethical…

Lack of Action to Enforce Ethical Standards.

I registered a formal complaint against A UKCP registered member nearly 4 months ago in relation to unethical conduct and raising serious safeguarding concerns. Thus far, no action...

IMHO, UKCP accreditation should be a Red Flag... AVOID!!!

AI inhuman response to request

It took me three years to feel enough confidence and self esteem to begin a complaint process against a UKCP member who re-traumatized me to such an extent I almost didn't survive. As a therapist myself, I am aware of how devastating a complaint procedure can be. I was mindful of the effect a complaint would have on his ability to practice. I had doubts about his practice anyway, I didn't want a complaint to harm his clients. I contacted UKCP asking for advice, I included some evidence, but made it clear that I needed to know if they would consider my case their concern ( the therapist had been a member of BACP when I was his client, and three years had passed). Clearly I'm still blaming myself for what went wrong, clearly I'm not over it! My complaint about UKCP is that the reply was from an AI (or a person who thinks like one). My question was ignored, the reply was generic and standard. It simply wanted me to name the therapist and state what happened with concrete evidence. I have given up!

I have over the years encountered a variety of their members, who all proved to be unethical. Firstly, they like to spread gossip about trainees and clients they often don't know based on - gossip, usually malicious. They seem to have brought their personal resentments and unresolved issues with them into their practices, without any self-awareness, as if this is normal. This includes those running courses, and the head of a well-known service who I went to for a second opinion on an abusive therapist. It wasn't long before he had contacted the person I wanted the second opinion about - to warn them! Apparently this is common practice! Their lack of ethics is astounding. Beware.

1 miniature star for their amazing…

1 miniature star for their amazing ability to survive as an organisation despite the utterly shameful handling of "conversion-therapy-MOU-gate" by their Board of Director. The first time I became accredited with UKCP was over 20 years ago. In total, I must have had a handful of referrals via their website during the entire period. Not much value for money there. Just hoops to jump to get their oversold stamp. They do think very highly of themselves. As a goodbye gift after all these years, after I said I no longer wished to go through their 5-year accreditation process (as no longer interested in the organisation) I was taken off the register as a matter of minutes despite having paid for a whole year's membership 2 months prior. Needless to say I am expecting a pro-rata refund at least. I remain accredited with COSRT and member of BABCP and registered member of the General Psychotherapy Council. Glad to no longer be associated with UKCP...

Membership is VERY expensive

As a member is is incredible expensive and you get nothing from them apart from a logo. BACP and NCPS are more helpful and seem to offer more. UKCP feels like a long slog and an achievement. Since SCopEd basically has levelled the playing field UKCP no longer gives the respect or edge it once used to I feel. Training is very expensive and exclusive compared to BACP accredited trainings.
If you were looking to train I would say simple counselling course would set you up for private practice. Do the minimum which I think is like a Level 4, one or two year course, cheaper and same result. All UKCP trainings are Level 7 (Masters) for at least 4 years. When it comes to earning money fees you charge are set by you I know Psychotherapists charging £50 whilst a level 4 is charging £80! of course it varies but I don't think the UKCP do anything to promote the standard nor do I think it is worth the money.

UKCP allows sham therapists to practice unhindered.

UKCP has always had the reputation of an 'anything gies' accrediting body. But this has become far worse as a result of allowing conversion therapists to practice (unlike BACP, BPS etc).

Unfortunately clients now have to vet UKCP therapists and quiz them on their methods during their first sessions. This is all because UKCP is refusing to do so themselves.

Avoid like the plague - whether you are a client or a trainee therapist.

An abuse victim endured abuse at the…

An abuse victim endured abuse at the hands of professionals when they were a child, this victim set out to seek justice and receive damages for the harm that was inflicted. However, the victims pursuit for justice led them to encounter a male individual who is registered with UKCP. This individual attempted to conceal the severe historical institutional abuse perpetrated against the child by professionals, when they were ment to assist in providing evidence for the case.

This person will have some very serious questions to answer when the authorities inevitably inquire as to why they did not assist the victim in reporting this historical abuse within the mental health system to the proper authorities. As the chap will know, there are 1000s of victims. To this individual, I say: you know who you are, and you will have to face the consequences of your actions when confronted by the police. Your blatant disregard for the well-being of abuse victims is simply unacceptable, and it is imperative that you be held accountable for your actions. If he is tipical of the sort of people that are abel to have UKCP memebership, then its needs shutting down ASAP.

Promotes Conversion Therapy

UKCP recently released a disturbing statement in support of transphobic therapists and conversion therapy. Their new chair, Dr. Christian Buckland, stated that there were 'many factors' that went into being trans that 'needed to be explored for a long time'.

I'm sure like most 'gender critical' transphobes, Buckland thinks he's being very subtle and clever.

His little speech repeated the usual, and offensive, 'gender critical' talking points about 'neurodiversity' and 'family dynamics' that will be *very* familiar to those of us who lived through Section 28.

We remember when people like Buckland said these *exact* things about gay people.

The conversion therapy that UKCP is promoting, and euphemising as 'exploratory therapy', causes suicidal ideation. They put in a lot of caveats about their code of practice, but the reality is that 'gender critical' therapists don't offer neutral therapy with a 'different approach'.

They offer conversion therapy, and according to victims of the practice, they deliberately deceive trans people into undergoing it. Actress Jen Richards has spoken at length about how she thought she was undergoing exploratory therapy, but there was always yet another avenue to 'explore', to the point where the therapist tried to convince her that her gender dysphoria was a way to 'blow off steam'.

UKCP is supporting and promoting transphobic therapists in tricking their patients into undergoing conversion therapy. It's unethical, immoral and extremely dangerous.

LGBTQ people need to avoid this dangerous and unethical organisation like the plague.

Egregious

One of the worst so-called regulators you will ever come across. In fact, I honestly believe that they are more unethical than the highly unethical therapists that they purportedly regulate.

No Hope

This is disgraceful. UKCP and BACP are rotten to the core. They are supposed to help desperate people.

Just look at the reviews!

A bunch of charlatans.
