Supportive University
I started at the University of Portsmouth during Covid and the support they gave me was amazing! They were always on hand to discuss any issues I had throughout the pandemic and provide support in terms of deadlines, mental health, and isolation. I study film production which meant it was very hard to have the hands on approach I had hoped for. However, when we were allowed back in person there were lots of sessions and the tutors really helped me to catch up on what I had missed.
A lot of help !
I started at the University of Portsmouth in September 2020, studying Early Childhood Studies. It was a weird experience, having lectures and seminars online, not being able to meet coursemates, and being stuck in halls all day, but the wellbeing team were very helpful in supporting students through the tough situation. The lecturers are very understanding, and easy to talk to, and they can signpost you to the correct people to make sure you get the correct help. There is a lot of help available at the uni, in terms of student finance help and the Disabled Student's Allowance (DSA), careers advice, educational workshops and a lot more! They are definitely worth going to!
Criminology and Forensic Studies Student
My experience at the University of Portsmouth has been more than I imagine in many different aspects. My course is both practical and coursework base, allowing me to broaden many skills I never had before coming here. You can also participate in one-to-one tutor meetings to discuss your progress and if you need extra help with your studies. The university also has strong connections with different companies and partnerships if you want a work placement or study abroad year.
In my first year, I lived in Chaucer House in an en-suite room. In my second year, I moved into a house and finally a flat both 10 mins away from the uni. The University campus is within a 15 to 20min walking distance range, so transport in Portsmouth is not a problem because you can walk everywhere. The student union has over 150 societies, all ranging from sports, cultural and course-focused ones. There’s plenty to choose from!

My experience as an Estranged student
Initially, I was terrified of attending university as an Estranged student. I was worried about being alone and unsupported. However, the student finance team offered and provided me with a variety of support including financial guidance, personal support and a bursary. The student wellbeing team were incredibly helpful with the courses that they run and the access to their trained therapists. Recently, there has been a society set up for students in my position which has helped me to feel more included and welcome within the university. All of the university staff that I have had the pleasure of engaging with have been supportive and accommodating throughout.

International Relations Student
About to go into my 3rd and final year at UoP. As an international student I was nervous about attending uni in a whole new country but I can say that I have had a good experience at UoP. There is a lot of support for international students, and the vast majority of staff and students are extremely welcoming.
My course has been interesting, yet challenging. Doing second year online didn't really help but I still felt like I had a good level of support and communication from the university, which was great.

Supportive and enriching experience at Portsmouth
I am a Sociology and Criminology student going into my third year at the University of Portsmouth. There is a sense of belonging at Portsmouth and I have been provided with so many opportunities to grow as an individual and realise my potential. I love that the lecturers on my course are welcoming and passionate about their fields of study. University experience
I have just finished my undergraduate degree at UoP and will now be entering my postgraduate course at the university. The flexible postgraduate framework for their Criminal Justice program meant I was able to specialise in the areas I’m interested in which was very appealing.

First year overview
University of Portsmouth has been an extraordinary experience so far. Moving abroad may seam scary at first, however there is no need to worry in this case. Each member of the staff has been extremely accommodating and invested within making you feel accepted and welcomed.
The university itself provides 1st year students with secured place in the halls of your choice. If you need to self-isolate food parcels will be provided to you.
There is also a wide range of part-time jobs opportunities if you wish to work alongside your studies. University even has a career centrum to help you with this process.
What I do appreciate probably the most is always having somebody qualified to talk to as well as being supported even five years after my studies end.

I've just finished my first year of study at UoP and, despite the difficulties of the pandemic, have thoroughly enjoyed my time here. Online lectures and seminars have been engaging and tutors are always available to support with tricky materials or discuss coursework queries. The city-campus style of the uni means that I get to explore the beautiful city on my way to lecture buildings, and the testing facilities have allowed me to feel safe going back to face-to-face teaching. Overall, a brilliant experience so far and I cannot wait to start my studies again in October!
