A fantastic experience! Our guide, Kris, was great - calm, inclusive and knowledgeable. We would gladly undertake another trip with her.
The resort was excellent - very comfortable but small and intimate. Having it all booked to our group was perfect. The food was healthy and very tasty with all requirements catered for. Staff were helpful and friendly. Our only suggestions for the resort would be to add fly-screens or bed nets and drying racks or lines at the cabins.
The snorkeling was everything we hoped for and we saw many new, especially invertebrate, species in varied sites. Blue whales a bonus!
The only disappointment was with the transit to and from the resort. We understand that Alor is isolated and flight options are limited, however perhaps overnighting in Kepang rather than Jakarta, on the way there, would have made for an easier trip (rather than 2am flight). We also would have liked to know that the flight from Alor involved 3 legs - this was not revealed until the day before leaving. We had booked a visit to Yogyakarta following the trip to Alor and so would have stopped at Surabaya (& taken a train to Jogja), rather than returning to Jakarta! This would have saved further travel, an extra flight (Jak-YIA) and a night's accommodation in Jakarta.
Overall however, we found the trip, with a great group of like-minded snorkelers, to be a unique and memorable adventure. We would recommend to anyone contemplating it - just do it! You won't regret it.

What a fabulous experience! Everything about it was fabulous. It was super well-organised from end to end. The snorkel guides were knowledgeable, friendly, inclusive and I felt very safe at all times. Our guide, Kris, was fabulous- friendly, warm, and so able to find all the wonderful creatures on the reef, educating us and sharing her joy on each snorkel. A real treat and I would absolutely travel with Planet Snorkeling again!

Ce fut une expédition en snorkeling magnifique. Merci Guillaume pour ta gentillesse, tes compétences et ton beau leadership tranquille. L’équipage du Sea Serpent fut attentionné à tout moment et une grande attention est mise sur la sécurité tant à bord que lors de nos sorties en mer au différents sites de plongée. La nourriture fut excellente aussi. Avoir des bouchons d’oreilles pour les nuits fut très utile pour couvrir le bruit de la ventilation et du bateau. Renée (Québec)

Jon at P-S covered every detail of the trip and was super prompt at responding to all my little questions throughout the process of planning our week at Wakatobi, during, and even a couple of things after. This was my first time on a liveaboard and I wasn’t sure whether I would like it. It was fantastic.
The booking process was easy, and the company was very responsive and happy to answer questions.
On the trip itself, the tour leader was great, the crew of the Sea Serpent were very professional and went the extra mile to ensure everyone was taken care of, and the snorkel guides were enthusiastic and happy to share their knowledge. The food was really good, with enough variety to meet everyone’s needs. The boat was clean, very comfortable and spacious. I felt safe, and so well looked after.
The holiday was active, yet at the same very relaxing.
I will definitely be booking another holiday with Planet Snorkeling.

Très belle semaine à bord d’un bateau confortable avec de très bons cuisiniers ! 3 sorties de snorkeling en moyenne avec des guides et des zodiacs qui réagissent vite au moindre problème. On se sent très en sécurité. Une bonne ambiance également. On partage nos magnifiques photos. Rencontre avec des Dugongs, des dauphins, et tous les poissons enchanteurs de la mer Rouge. Grand merci à Guillaume l’organisateur de ces beaux voyages !

The Red Sea did not disappoint!

The whole tour from the pre-trip preparations to the guidance offered throughout is top-notch! Guillaume is clearly a really nice guy, and loves his work. It's helpful that he clearly loves snorkelling and aquatic life. I would repeat any time!

Wonderful snorkel in the Red Sea! The tour leader Guillaume organized this tour very well…very responsive before, during and after. Guillaume is very knowledgeable about the fish of the Red Sea and helped everyone identify the things they wished to know about. The pretrip at a resort was excellent…be sure to take advantage of the house reef with early morning snorkels, because we saw things there in shallow water that were not easy to see at the reef. The boat was also excellent in many ways: great food (including a special bakery chef!), helpful staff, and snorkel guides. One of us needed extra help, and the guides were patient and willing to go the extra mile for him. The dolphin house was an experience that will last a lifetime…swimming with spinner dolphins wild and free. The boat could use a bit of improvement in comfort of beds and room temperature. Also, the emergency exit seemed inadequate if there should be a fire.

Guillaume answered all our questions. He was calm, not control freak.

Cette semaine sur le bateau est une super expérience qui permet de profiter de 3 à 4 sorties snorkeling par jour ! Le format à 24 personnes est idéal : c'est plus intime et cela facilite vraiment les partages. Mon seul bémol concerne le vent, qui rend parfois les sorties un peu moins ludique. C'était notre deuxième fois que nous participons à cette expérience et ce ne sera certainement pas ladernière !

We had a fantastic trip! Starting at the resort with its beautiful house reef was a great choice by Guillaume and a perfect beginning.

Guillaume was warm, attentive, and very knowledgeable about marine life. On Sea Serpent Excellence, the whole crew was friendly, cheerful, and helpful. Mustafa and Amid did a great job guiding the English-speaking group in the water.

Seeing dugongs and dolphins was unforgettable, and the photos Guillaume shared were a wonderful bonus.

A great Red Sea experience with a really lovely team — we would happily go again!

Un formidable séjour à bord du “Sea serpent excellence ». Très beau bateau à la fois spacieux et compact. Restauration très qualitative. Équipage aux petits soins et sécurité irréprochable. Tout est mis en œuvre pour nous permettre de découvrir une faune marine exceptionnelle. Remerciements particuliers à Guillaume, notre Tour leader, pour sa disponibilité, sa patience et sa bienveillance. Un séjour à recommander +++.

Excellent for snorkellers enthousiastics!

This was a mixed experience.

The plus points:

1) Having so many snorkelling opportunities! As a group we wanted to be in the water early and after the first day we were usually in the sea by 7.30am. This was easily the best snorkel of the day in terms of creatures and visibility. Some snorkels, especially in the afternoons, were a little dull, but the sheer number of snorkels meant we saw a lot overall.

2) The food was terrific and abundant, more than I expected from a ship. A whole roast turkey was unveiled on the last night!

3) The crew were very friendly and helpful.

4) The hotel where we stayed for the first night had a great house reef with all the usual Red Sea fish, including a scorpion fish.

5) Guillaume was a genial host and gave an excellent short lecture on Red Sea fish.

Less happy moments:

1) The guiding was not quite what I expected from other trips. In essence there was little difference between a guided group and an unguided one. Guides carried a safety ring which hampered them spotting and pointing out sea creatures. (Incidentally Guillaume was good at this, but he was one person amongst 24.) The groups became confused and spread out and appeared difficult to manage.

2) The crew were well prepared for sickness and diarrhoea with suitable Egyptian products - and they were necessary. I cannot say how many people were affected, but be alert to the possibility and take what's on offer. It works.

Overall I am not convinced that a liveaboard is a better experience than a land-based holiday - but views differ! The Makadi Bay house reefs (we returned to a different hotel after the trip) were as good as any coral we explored from the boat, although without dolphins obviously. The movement of the boat when it was choppy and windy was off-putting, and of course there was not much space. But if you like boats, this trip would not disappoint.

A great trip to the Red Sea aboard Sea Serpent Excellence. Ten days travelling up and down the coast from Marsa Alam and snorkelling maybe 40 times in total. FORTY! Reefs, fish, dugong, turtles and dolphins. The lot!
