Check-Up Fit - Super Efficient, Focused Session
See my previous review for a fuller description of my experience, but I just went back for a less comprehensive and more focused 'check up fit' almost a year after my first visit to see Nuno and wanted to review that session.
This visit was about optimising and confirming my fit for a few very specific applications on two bikes that Nuno fitted late last year. I used the 'Check Up Fit' service which is new this year and made a whole lot of sense given that I was a returning customer and we'd previously looked at my fit on these bikes.
It was an extremely efficient session and we were able to get straight into the details because I already knew my fit was pretty close, and I knew exactly what I wanted to achieve. Nuno was, as ever, knowledgeable, thorough, and really effective at helping me dial into my fit goals. Along the way he also diagnosed a couple of new physiological imbalances that I could never have perceived on my own, so we also addressed those partly in fitting and partly in prescribing some mobility exercises.
I'll reiterate the conclusion from my previous review - Orbis Lab is the place to go if you want really solid biomechanical-research-backed support and want to be an active participant in your fitting journey. The addition of the Check Up Fit service now also makes it much more efficient and affordable to make return visits to update and fine tune your fit on a regular basis.
It should come as no surprise with someone in the science/health/fitness realm, but Nuno's COVID safety is good too. He has been very careful and considered in deciding how and when to reopen post-lockdown, and though we didn't actually discuss any safety measures on the day, everything you'd expect was in place (both of us masked, etc.)

Hi AEF, thank you for your kind words. I felt we made a lot of progress in the session. I wanted the "check-up" service to be exactly what we did: a service where we optimise the bike you have without aiming to buy any more components; a service where we hone in on your objectives and try and get the bike as close as possible to that. We were able to successfully do that with both your gravel and road bikes. Thank you for your kind words, but let's not forget the importance of your input in the session. It is very important that the client has a good notion of his/her aims and objectives and you were very sensible and articulate in explaining that to me, which is why the fit was so successful.
I think for other readers of these reviews I should mention that AEF is an incredibly intelligent person with a deep grasp of the biomechanics process of cycling.
Regarding the COVID I forgot to mention in the email, which is something I will correct in the future and include the following:
Mask are mandatory for both rider and myself. Hands and shoes will be sprayed with a 80% alcohol solution and social distance will be practice throughout the session.

Nuno was professional and friendly from the moment I walked into the lab. Giving a detailed explanation of everything that he was doing, he made sure I was comfortable with all aspects of my examination and bike fit.
What really impressed me was how honest he was and how knowledgable he was on how my specific injury affected the way I rode.
In addition, Nuno didn’t seem to judge at the fact I was a novice to cycling and the fact I was female.
I will definitely be back for his expertise!

Hi Elise. It was a pleasure to meet you and to have you on my lab. You came from another bike fit here in Glasgow who was not able to sort out your issues. To be fair to that colleague, your case was not an easy one, and as you were able to witness, a deeper medical history combined with a proper functional assessment created the basis for the changes we performed on the bike.
I am very happy you were able to identify some of the traits that characterise me: honesty, attention to detail, perspective, knowledge transfer to real life, open minded, etc.

Hi Simon. Thank you very much for your comments. With your son (IsS) wanting a new bike, we used our motorised ergometer controlled by a computer script I developed. IsS was able to test all frame geometries and all combinations of front end. He was also able to test crank lengths. But the main benefit, I though, was uncovering lower limb biomechanical issues that needed to be sorted. We have been in touch for a few weeks now as IsS goes to other clinical professionals to ascertain the best treatment outcomes for his conditions and you are scheduled to be back for a quick chat about this. I look forward to reviewing the treatment options other professionals suggested.
Great experience with a knowledgeable Individual
I went to see Nuno after a couple of solid recommendations to fix some issues that I have on the bike, very insightful and to my surprise the issues weren't what I thought they were! No inherent issues with my bike setup which his gadgets and saddle pressure mapping showed to be spot on but some valuable input into some previous injuries that are causing me to compensate and knocking me off a bit - the benefits of a PHD in Biomechanics I expect! Little tweak to my cleat position and solid advise on shoe sizing was great. Very chilled atmosphere and Nuno takes pride in his work taking the time to discuss and explain everything to you. Luckily I didn't need to trial any other saddles but he had several available if that had been the case, no pushy sales pitch here just a good experience to dial in on the bike. His motto was, enjoy the ride and leave the rest to him :)

Hi David, what a session we had. A 1h30m bike fit turned in to a 3h testing and problem solving session. As soon I took your history and, as we went through the diagnostic stage of the appointment, it was quite evident to both of us that there were important things we had to absolutely address. You were able to test insoles and try correct sized (both length and width) shoes. You also tested a different saddle but the pressure distribution on your own saddle was looking very very good. In fact, one of the best pressure maps I've seen in a while. All the accelerometers placed throughout your body helped with each change we made. I have sent you all the supporting files with motion capture analysis for you to show your physiotherapist or other medical professionals.
In the same way that I am not going to try and sell you a saddle or a handlebar, I am also not going to try and adjust saddle height and fore/aft just to show that I have changed your saddle position. You didn't need it. Your saddle height was spot on, which is no wonder because you clearly spent time trying to understand your body. You are someone who is constantly changing and looking for change in order to get better and I value that very much. I think that is a healthy way of living. The spatial position of the saddle reflected that.
You have homework to do, perhaps the hardest type of homework, but I know you can succeed. You have the drive and motivation for it.

Paul, it was a joy to have you in the lab for a biomechanical service on your TT bike. We were able to give you more room at the hip without any cost to your aerodynamics. And in fact, by doing that, you now have more room for scapular movement while in the TT bars which, as you have no doubt seen in the motion capture images, the amount of frontal area reduction you are now able to achieve is quite significant. From the sagital pictures and inertial data we could see there was no increase in torso angle which means your drag did not change as a function of shape.
Lastly, the cleats were oriented to suit your biomechanical state on the bike, which you felt immediately.
I very much enjoyed our session. It was a pleasure to work with someone with clear aims, and a very adaptable body.
You now have homework. Good luck and keep me posted.

I was recommended to give Orbis Lab a visit for a cycle fitting as I was going to undertake a two week charity cycle tour to Europe. I found Nuno extremely helpful to my needs. He took all the time it needed to go through every aspect of my challenge and indeed I felt he was invested my comfort and safety. The time passed quickly thanks to Nuno’s engaging manner and although I required a good deal of kit there was no hint of any hard sell. To my untrained eyes all of the kit in the lab looked state of the art. I have no hesitation in recommending Nuno and Orbis Lab.

I can't recommend Orbis Lab enough! Very professional and everything is undertaken using an evidence based approach and you receive a full written report afterwards to keep and refer back to.
Nuno is knowledgable, experienced, professional and friendly.
I benefitted very much from a road bike fit with Orbis Lab last year and then I umm'd and ahh'd over whether I really needed either a shoe fit or a saddle fit because I figured I'd been managing for 3 years without. I decided to just try both as I spend so much time riding and comfort and efficiency for performance is essential to me. I'm still so glad that I did - Both services were incredibly extensive and I benefitted from them. I think all riders would benefit from having a shoe fit in particular. The shoe/foot assessment resulted in me moving my cleat position, using smaller width pedals and using a set of insoles which gives me more comfort, stops me bending my toes up and I feel better able to transfer power. I love the insoles. Fully recommend!

Hi Vicky, what an honour to have 2016 National champion 25 mile TT. We had three long sessions where we looked at almost every aspect of your cycling. We tested pedal spindles on the velodrome in order to understand the width (or the pedal stance) that would benefit your power application. Yes, you foot assessment with pressure mapping and insole testing was great. I mean, what people usually don't realise is that we actually TEST insoles. We change the height of the arch, its longitudinal and medial location and we measure the pressure profile with pressure insoles every time we change something. Which is why your insoles were spot on. Your saddle mapping service allowed you to take 3 saddles home for weeks in order to understand their comfort out in the real world. I think this is crucial. All in all, this was a great set of sessions.

Great competence and experience
I had a bike fit, with cleat positioning/angles, and bike geometry, and a peak power test. Orbis is a very well equipped lab, with a range of different components to try and a computer-controlled fitting bike. Nuno, the owner, started measuring my bike, reproducing the exact geometry on the fitting bike, and starting from there. Nuno and his colleague are extremely professional and knowledgeable in both bike engineering and the biomechanics of the human body. Nuno is so passionate that was explaining me the effect of every change in geometry, which means I know more now and can also try small changes myself. Very pleasant experience and also informative. Would happily recommend.

Hi MC thank you so much for your review. At that time I had a student with me doing her dissertation. I act as an external supervisor for the Uni of Glasgow students' of the Sports Science degree, as a biomechanics specialist. It is great to have the opportunity to teach and supervise end of year thesis. With the student you mentioned we actually created a new tool to measure cleat alignment based on transverse plane rotations of the foot. This will be an improvement on current tools that are over complicating the alignment (by using mm scales which are too small for this gross application) and not focusing on essencial biomechanical aspects of pedalling. Hopefully our tool will change that. Currently in testing to be submitted to scientific journals for peer review and publishing.

I contacted Orbis Lab during lockdown as I was having problems with my saddle, and Nuno helped me find my perfect saddle so that I can ride without pain!
