For almost 70 years, NICEIC has been the UK’s largest certification body for electrical businesses with over 40,000 currently certified with us. As the industry leader, we drive the highest standards of competence and safety. We assess, certify and train electricians, plumbers, renewable energy installers, and gas and heating engineers. To become certified, businesses must demonstrate their compliance with technical standards and industry best-practice through rigorous assessments and continuing professional development. Trade professionals look to us for certification and technical leadership, and value the credibility our name gives theirs. We provide ongoing advice and support, and list their businesses on our online ‘Find a trusted NICEIC tradesperson’ tool. We help build public trust in trade professionals – and we never compromise on that trust. We work alongside government and industry to shape policy and drive standards. Many UK businesses, government organisations, local authorities and landlords will only work with NICEIC-certified businesses. The NICEIC brand is owned and managed by Certsure (LLP).

I had my first ever inspection, after building it up in my head and stressing Tim the assessor was fantastic, easy going and really knew his stuff and quite quickly put my mind at rest.
The day was laid out clearly and everything went smoothly.

All OK, the exam is expensive for what it is, although I did get a mock thrown in. Paper had some typos which many people would have found confusing, some relevant information seemed to be missing from the questions, and some questions appeared ambiguous. Probably would pay to get someone technical to proof read these before issuing.

Hi all , I have just finished the BS5839-1 2025 course. Our course was held at the Dunstable training centre. We had a class of 12 candidates of all levels of electrical & fire alarm engineer backgrounds. Our tutor was called Greg. On arrival you receive two 300 page bound folders & Greg goes through every page on the course. The course has just the right level of time between breaks of which you will need and be grateful of. There are 3 breaks during the day with a good quality lunch provided , little tip don’t hang around talking if you want any of the hot stuff as it goes quick.
You will require a copy of BS5839-1:2025 or Greg or the tutor can lend you a copy . The course is based on learning the two bound folders information and cross referencing to the BS.
There is some time allocated within the course for questions, I would recommend keeping these to a minimum as there is a lot to go through and not a lot of time.
You will be given a mock exam during the training to familiarise yourself with the exam format on a provided PC . Everyone in our class passed this , so quite a euphoric feeling, I passed and still had questions to answer . This is where exam technique comes into play . You only have 50 minutes in the exam to answer the questions and they are not in order so you are back & forward in the BS like someone possessed .
Answer all the questions , as you have a one in four chance of you are not sure of the exact correct answer.
As mentioned before the course is over 4 days , I personally think it would be better over 5 days so you are not so rushed . This however, may have been due to the many questions our candidates had for Greg myself included that slowed up the course .
Ok finally , Bring a photo ID for the exam . Answer the ones you know off by heart in your head first , flag the ones you don’t have a clue to and go back to them at the end . Don’t give up !
The exam is Twice as hard as the mock exam , be prepared to look for things not covered in the course , but the answers are in the BS somewhere .
We found out that only half our course passed , it is tough guys .
That said , I learned loads from the course & I’ve been in the industry best part of 40 years . Be prepared for loads of paperwork in the future if you’re using this course to be BAFE accredited.
Greg’s a top bloke if you get him you will be ok .The Dunstable centre is nice , clean & has good facilities & lots of parking.
And yes I passed , thank god .
Good luck everyone, I hope this helps your choice of course. I’ve tried to be as honest as I can .

The assessor conducted the inspection in a highly professional, fair, and constructive manner. The approach was clear, proportionate, and supportive, with guidance provided where appropriate. The assessment process felt collaborative rather than adversarial, and the inspector demonstrated strong technical knowledge, professionalism, and respect throughout. This made the assessment both productive and positive, and reflects well on the standards expected of the NICEIC. Having a new inspector that does not speak down to you was a breath of fresh air, Thanks to Ian Tooley a gentleman.

The course was given by greg . By adding humour he kept a 4 day course entertaining . Funny guy . The course books are fantastic and we use them daily . Not often you can say you enjoyed a course and learnt a lot at the same time . We will be sending more operatives on this course as definitely worth the money . Will be undertaking more courses delivered by this course lecturer .

Nigel did a good job explaining everything. The lunch was very nice too.
My only criticism would be that the NIC don't appear to host any training in the south west. I am 30 minutes south of Bristol. It would be great if some of the courses were a bit closer
