Very disappointing experience.

I would not rent from Mercury again.
The booking was originally made through Wheego, but the local rental provider in Zakynthos was Mercury Rent a Car, who provided the vehicle and handled the rental locally.

The problems started at pick-up. My debit card was not accepted for the €1,800 deposit, as a credit card was required. The alternative offered was an additional non-refundable charge of approximately €245, which significantly increased the actual cost of the rental.

I was also charged €35 for an additional driver, even though I clearly stated at pick-up that I would be the only person driving the car. The second driver's licence was not even checked or registered. When I later requested a refund, Mercury refused, saying they could not verify whether the additional driver had been used. I find this explanation difficult to understand considering they never verified the second driver in the first place.

The vehicle itself already had multiple areas of existing damage, and its overall condition was not what I would expect from a well-maintained rental car.

The return was the final disappointment. Because of an early flight, I informed Mercury in advance that I needed to return the car at approximately 7:00 AM, one hour before the office opened. I was told that an early return would cost another €49.60.

I refused to pay another fee simply to return their vehicle and emailed them asking for instructions on where to safely leave the keys. I also explained in advance what I would do if nobody came to collect the vehicle.

Mercury did not reply.
At 7:00 AM nobody arrived, and I had received no instructions about the keys. I therefore left the car outside their office, with the keys in the location I had informed them about in advance. The vehicle was returned with the fuel refilled.

Afterwards, I received only a vehicle condition/damage report, with no response or explanation regarding my previous communication.

My disappointment is not about one individual fee. It is about the overall experience: additional charges, the condition of the vehicle, lack of flexibility and, above all, poor communication when a simple problem needed to be resolved.
Based on my experience, I would not recommend Mercury Rent a Car Zakynthos.

If you decide to rent from them, I strongly recommend checking all conditions regarding credit/debit cards, deposits and out-of-hours returns very carefully, getting any additional charges confirmed in writing, and taking detailed photos and videos of the vehicle both at collection and return.

Pessima. Ci hanno dato un auto con spie accese di malfunzionamento, ce l’hanno cambiata per lo stesso modello e dopo 15 minuti di strada l’auto perde il controllo, rischiando di farci male e fare del male a terzi. Chiamiamo l’agenzia “discover car” per segnalare, l’unica cosa che ci offrono un’altra auto con un ulteriore rincaro per la richiesta di cambio di auto.

The mercury rental was next to the Apollonion Astoria’s hotel in Lixouri, Greece. Through recommendations from other hotel users I rented a car for a few days. We had a larger car as there were 4 of us (Auto, Vauxhall crossland). The staff were brilliant, very helpful and accommodating. Yes, it seems an easier more relaxed process than it is in the uk when hiring a car, but can’t fault them and didn’t feel concerned. They even came and collected the car from the hotel the morning after, which I thought was really helpful of them and meant we didn’t need to rush back before they closed the day before. It Probably helped staying next door to the rental place. Definitely would recommend, especially from this location. If we return again next year, I will not hesitate to rent again.

Took the hired car from mercury close to the airport in Kefalonia. Car provided seemed fine at first. Within a day there was a terrible smell of the clutch burning and the car being seriously underpowered for the steep hills of the island. Car was a 1.2 lites 75 HP Vauxhall corsa. It would not drive up hills so I was forced to take change the car. There was little availability of other cars in peak season. They have me a different older Vauxhall corsa that has done 124,000 km. It was a bit more powerful at 1.6 L engine so I was obliged to accept it. Drove ok and better than the first car. The next day the car lock failed to open on pressing the mobile key fob to unlock it. I tried everything and it would not happen at night. I had to call Mercury as an emergency and was told they could only come out on the morning to fix or put in a new fob battery. Luckily it was parked outside our villa and we weren’t stuck. Very frustrating and disappointed with this company.
Would never now repeat business with them.

Trovo inaccettabile e assurdo che, per riconsegnare l'auto solamente **un'ora e mezza prima dell'orario previsto**, mi sia stato richiesto un supplemento di **49,60 €**. Una cifra sproporzionata per una semplice variazione di orario e, a mio parere, un modo poco corretto di gestire il rapporto con il cliente.
La cosa ancora più grave è che l'orario indicato nella prenotazione era **alle 06:45**, mentre Mercury Rent a Car ci imponeva la riconsegna alle **08:15**. Se avessimo seguito l'orario imposto da loro, avremmo rischiato seriamente di **perdere il volo di ritorno**, considerando i tempi necessari per completare le procedure di partenza.
Durante altri soggiorni a Zante, abbiamo avuto modo di usufruire di altre compagnie di autonoleggio presenti sull'isola e abbiamo riscontrato molta più disponibilità, maggiore attenzione verso il cliente e anche veicoli più curati e in condizioni migliori rispetto a quello ricevuto da Mercury.
La situazione è stata resa ancora più spiacevole dal fatto che la prenotazione era stata effettuata tramite **Wheego**, che successivamente ha affidato il servizio a Mercury Rent a Car senza una nostra scelta diretta.

Dopo questa esperienza, per quanto ci riguarda,** MAI PIU' con Mercury Rent a Car né con Wheego**. Dai servizi di autonoleggio in vacanza ci si aspetta professionalità, flessibilità e buon senso, non costi aggiuntivi ingiustificati , legati a una semplice esigenza prioritaria e organizzativa del cliente.

I rented a car for my holiday in Lefkada well in advance through CarTrawler. I also purchased their more expensive, full-coverage insurance for the rental car.

The car was provided in Lefkada by the local rental company Mercury Rent a Car.

When I arrived to collect the vehicle, the female employee informed me that I either had to purchase their full insurance for €25 per day or they would place a security deposit of €850 on my credit card. I explained that I had already purchased full insurance through CarTrawler. However, she said she had no idea what my CarTrawler insurance covered, so I eventually decided to purchase Mercury Rent a Car’s insurance as well. In my opinion, it is very strange that customers are expected to pay for insurance twice. I agreed to pay because I did not want any amount to be blocked or charged on my credit card.

Before arriving at the rental office, I had already decided that I would inspect the car carefully before accepting it. However, the employee asked—and even insisted—that I sign the rental agreement before I had even seen the vehicle. I repeatedly told her that I would not sign anything until I had inspected the car and checked its condition. Eventually, she agreed to bring the car outside.

The car was generally in good condition, but it had several small scratches and dents on the bumpers, as well as one larger area of damage. I asked the employee to record these scratches and dents on the inspection form that I was about to sign. She refused. I asked several times for the existing damage to be documented, but she still refused.

In the end, I signed the rental agreement and took my own photographs of the vehicle’s condition. However, I felt that these photos might not have been sufficient if the rental company had later tried to hold me responsible for the existing damage. I find it very difficult to understand why the company refused to document the damage, even when I specifically requested it before signing the agreement. At that point, I was genuinely concerned that I might later be charged for damage that was already present.

The employee assured me that I had full insurance and that the existing damage did not matter. However, it remained completely unclear to me what their full insurance actually covered. According to the employee, the payment receipt itself served as proof that I had purchased the insurance.

In the end, everything went well. I was instructed to leave the car in my hotel’s parking lot when the rental period ended, and I later received a return confirmation by email.

What I found very unusual was that the return document included detailed notes and photographs of the vehicle’s existing damage. None of these photographs or damage records were included in the rental agreement that I was asked to sign when I collected the car. Furthermore, the return document had been signed on my behalf by one of the company’s employees.

I do not know whether this is standard practice among car rental companies in Greece, but I find it highly unusual that the company refused to record the vehicle’s existing damage before I signed the agreement, even after I repeatedly requested it. I strongly suspect that customers who decline the rental company’s own full insurance may later be held responsible for pre-existing damage.

Amazing service and wonderful help. We never had any issues with the car and the pickup/drop off was so unexpected but appreciated. Would highly recommend if you’re renting a car. Will definitely book with mercury next time again!!

Da evitare assolutamente. Dal sito di Ryanair ho prenotato una vettura per la vacanza a Cefalonia con società di noleggio Wheego che garantisce una flotta di veicoli del 2022 o successivi.
Arrivato a destinazione non ho trovato ad aspettarmi la società Wheego ma il noleggio Mercury. Mi hanno dato una vettura che ho poi scoperto essere stata immatricolata nel 2014 con quasi 70.000 chilometri e le gomme secche oltre i limiti di sicurezza. Al rientro in Italia segnalo il tutto a Wheego. Mi rispondono una terza società Selecta senza minimamente scusarsi e scrivendo che potevo chiedere di sostituire la vettura se non ero contento. Si, certo .... io vado a fare una vacanza di relax e devo pure fare i test alle loro auto; non loro che dovevano fornirmi una vettura a posto. Ridicoli

Avoid at all cost! At first we had to wait for 45 minutes to be picked up from the airport. When they came to pick us up there was only place for one of us so i had to go to the car rental alone and leave my partner at the airport and pick her up after receiving the car. Once I finally arrived at the counter i had to pay an extra charge for a full extra day of 50 euro’s for bringing the car back at a later time than the time of day that i picked it up. This was not mentioned in the booking where i already provided these times… And to make things worse the car is an old Fiat Panda which strugles with hills which is a problem on a hilly island like Zakynthos. To finish this experiencia of they decided to screw us one more time when we brought the car back by charging us 100 euro to remove salt stains which can be done in 2 minutes with some water and a brush… conclusion: AVOID AT ALL COST!

Avoid Mercury Rent Car – Scam Alert!

I had a terrible experience with Mercury Rent Car in Zakynthos. They charged me an outrageous 100 euros for some salt stains on the seat, which could have been easily brushed off – something absolutely ridiculous on an island where everyone goes to the beach!
When I pointed out that the stains could be removed with just water, vinegar, and a brush, the lady at the desk simply replied that I could do it myself if I wanted. This is an absurd and unprofessional way to treat customers.
This is clearly a scam to squeeze extra money from tourists. Avoid this company at all costs – there are many honest rental companies on the island!

L'esperienza di noleggio peggiore mai avuta. Appena arrivati a lefkada in aeroporto siamo stato male accolti dalla Sig.ra Elena che ha passato 15 minuti cattivamente ad agitarci su tutti i pericoli e ogni danno che potevamo fare alla macchina e quanto ci sarebbe costato. Per fortuna avevamo fatto una assicurazione con discovercars perché loro alla riconsegna ci hanno addebitato costi folli...si è permessa pure di dire falsità come la presenza di segni (inesistenti) sull'auto. Abbiamo passato una vacanza pessima per colpa loro e perso soldi. Mai più. La societa peggiore in Grecia.

My husband and I have rented cars from plenty of companies, but this one was by far the most professional. Our last vacation in Zakynthos was absolutely amazing, and a big part of that was thanks to this company.

We booked our rental through Booking.com via Wheego, but it turns out Mercury is one of their franchises. Upon arrival, a friendly employee was waiting for us at the airport with our name on a sign and a warm welcome. After that, another friendly young guy with cool tattoos picked us up and drove us to the office, even giving us helpful tips and recommendations along the way!

Our experience got even better when we arrived at the office. A guy with curly hair greeted us with a smile, offered us cold water, and walked us through the contract, clearly explaining all our options without any pressure. To our surprise, he even upgraded us to a Cabriolet for free, which we absolutely loved! It made exploring the island even more special, and we created so many unforgettable memories. Just to be safe, we recorded a quick video of the car before setting off to avoid any misunderstandings about damages—that was it!

When we returned the car, a lovely young lady welcomed us back, did a quick check to make sure everything was in order, and then drove us back to the airport.

Three weeks later, just as promised, we received our deposit back. We couldn’t be happier with the whole experience, and we’re already looking forward to seeing them again when we return to Zakynthos this July to explore the other half of the island!

Total scam - Avoid at all costs

We booked a car through Booking with full insurance included. However, when we arrived at the Wheego counter, we were informed that we needed a credit card with a €700 deposit, which we didn’t have. They then forced us to take out a second insurance policy for €125 without having us sign anything and promised to send the insurance contract by email, which we never received.

Major issue: we had a problem with a deflated tire. We went back to the Mercury/Wheego office, thinking we’d get a replacement car, especially since we had paid for two insurance policies. Surprise! They told us that the €125 insurance did not cover the tires. We had to go to a mechanic at our own expense to inflate the tires, something that should never happen with a rental car! On top of that, they tried to blame us, saying we didn’t know how to drive on the difficult roads of Cephalonia. Their excuse: they’ve been driving there for 20 years without any issues!

Second surprise: Booking! It was difficult to find their phone number even though they claim to have 24/7 customer service. Once we finally got in touch, the agent told us that the original insurance we purchased through Booking (which covered tires) had to be canceled because we couldn’t have two insurance policies at the same time. They refunded us, but there was no mention of this policy when we took out the insurance.

This is a total scam! Wheego trapped us with their shady practices, and Booking should not be working with such dishonest companies.

Absolutely abysmal service. Picked up our Fiat Panda, which was very dirty & old, for our 5 day holiday. The car struggled throughout - getting up hills was a major issue - which is useless on a hilly island. Returned the car & we were charged €700 for a scratch on the plastic bumper (that was ABSOLUTELY not caused by us and is quite frankly an absurd charge for a scratch) and despite multiple emails and chases, we’ve still not been sent the official documents to allow us to claim for reimbursement on insurance. Total scam, giving car rentals a bad name. Do not waste your money here - please spent a small amount more for a reputable company who will not rip you off.
