We provide a new email service that acts as the centre of your online communications and also offers the benefits of a professional, neutral email address. Our team of qualified IT specialists follows all current technological trends and successfully applies these to implement new product features. This means that you, the user, benefit from constant development of our email service and can be assured that you will also use an up-to-date, unique service in the future.
The following is a brief overview of the most important milestones in our company history:
May 2006
The foundation was laid for our vision with the acquisition of the "mail.de" internet domain.
April 2009 - foundation!
The foundation of mail.de GmbH meant that the legal framework for starting the development phase was now in place. The team was created, office space was rented, hardware acquired, the hard work commenced and ... the mail.de project was up and running!
Summer 2011 - mail.de goes live!
After a two-year development period we were able to offer our customers in Germany a modern, contemporary, innovative email service that satisfies the demands of the users of today. The use of state-of-the-art Internet technologies enables the user to to give structure to the ever-increasing influx of incoming emails via intuitive user interfaces whilst also offering exceptional security at the same time. Initially, registration was only possible in conjunction with our ad-free Premium packages.
2012 - security and privacy for everyone!
Our range was expanded with the addition of the free FreeMail package. We have quickly established ourselves as a provider of free email addresses within Germany. FreeMail is a product that combines our stringent requirements regarding quality and security with the wishes of many users for a free email address. The exceptional level of security provided by our email service was confirmed with several victories in tests over the following years.
2013 - the summer when Snowden woke up the Internet!
The whistle-blower affair featuring Edward Snowden, along with the NSA scandal that it triggered, meant that all email providers based in Germany experienced phenomenal popularity. Including us! Internet users became aware of the need for privacy and data protection, and by now learned to appreciate our core competences in the areas of security, encryption, and data protection. Clearly, this was also aided by the fact that due to the location of our headquarters and also our high-security data centre, we were subject to Germany's rigorous and highly regarded data protection legislation.
2014 - or the year we became mobile.
Completion of our iOS and Android apps for smartphones and tablets means we can make the entire world of mail.de available to our customers anywhere, at any time.
2015 - mail.de rocks the world!
It was our honour to be chosen to carry out the unique fan mail project on the www.acdc.com band website for the world-famous rock band AC/DC. AC/DC fans throughout the world were able to register their own email address "wantname@acdc.com" and become part of the AC/DC family.
2016 - Europe, here we come!
Acquisition of the mail.ch, mail.fr, mail.uk, & mail.co.uk domains meant that the foundation was laid for expansion of our service into neighbouring Switzerland, France, and the UK. The main phase of implementation was now taking place.
May 2017 - Hello Switzerland!
Our service was launched in Switzerland with the https://mail.ch domain.
Aug 2017 - Allez les Bleus !
This was followed by the launch of our service in France on https://mail.fr.
Sep 2017 - It's Teatime!
Last but not least our service was launched on https://mail.co.uk for Great Britain.
Mai 2018 - Introduction of the EU GDPR
The EU GDPR was on everyone's lips at the beginning of 2018. Naturally, we worked intensively on the implementation of the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) in order to implement the necessary changes on time, although we had already introduced many "innovations" on a voluntary basis for years, because we take the protection of your data particularly seriously!
Nov 2018 - TLS 1.3
The introduction of the new encryption protocol TLS 1.3 on all our pages was an important security gain.
Jun 2019 - The Great Galileo Experiment
Together with Galileo, we tested whether and how you can save CO2 by deleting old emails.
2020 - Extensive work on our backend
In 2020, we had to make extensive changes to our server infrastructure in order to continue to live up to our success.
Mar 2021 - Individual profile pictures
To help our customers keep track of their communication, we display an individual profile picture for each email.
Aug 2021 - New portal design
After more than ten years of only minor design changes, we are giving our German corporate website a new look.
Feb 2022 - mail.de receives BSI IT security mark
On 1 February 2022, we received the IT security mark from the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for each of our 4 products FreeMail, PlusMail, ProMail and PowerMail. With these labels, we show that we comply with the highest standards of security and data protection.
Apr 2022 - mail.de plants thousands of trees for premium customers
Since April, we have been planting thousands of new trees for our premium customers every year. Depending on the contract selected, up to 3 trees per customer per year!
Jun 2024 - New design for all websites
With a modern new design for all our websites and apps, we are bringing a breath of fresh air to the look of our products. But it's not just the design that has been tweaked; some functionalities have also been improved for the sake of user-friendliness.
Jan 2025 - New Pricing Structures and Premium Packages in Europe
At the start of 2025, we adjusted our pricing structure for premium email packages to address rising costs and technological requirements – the first adjustment in over a decade. At the same time, the "PlusMail," "ProMail," and "PowerMail" packages, which have proven successful in Germany, were also introduced on our mail.fr, mail.uk, and mail.ch platforms. The goal is to offer a unified, powerful service for our European customers – for greater transparency, ease of use, and an enhanced customer experience.
Aug 2025 – mail.de receives gold status in the BSI Hall of Fame
As part of the nationwide ‘Email Security Year 2025’ campaign, the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has awarded mail.de gold status in its Hall of Fame. The decisive factor was the successful and comprehensive implementation of technical guidelines such as DNSSEC and DANE in particular. We have been meeting these requirements for years – among other things, as the first company in Germany to receive the official IT security label from the BSI, which we received for all our products in February 2022.
With the award in August 2025, the BSI has once again confirmed that mail.de is one of the most secure email providers in Germany that actively contributes to securing national and international email traffic.

I signed up for this as BT stopped allowing you to use outlook on a basic account. I thought that mail.co.uk was a uk company which is why I decided to use them and in fact they are in Germany and nothing to do with the UK at all???? One day i was unable to access some of my old emails and had to pay money to recover them which I thought was a complete rip off as they were already on there server? The last 7 days they have had two outages and I cart received any message and am awaiting urgent message being forwarded from my old email address. I would advise any one reading this simply not to use them no UK support and they are not a UK company also on a free account you are flooded with ads in Germany??? nasty
I strongly advise caution before relying on mail.co.uk as your main email provider. Without any prior notice, my account was suddenly closed, leaving me without access to important emails and personal data. The only explanation given was a generic “security reason,” but despite following all recommended steps and contacting support multiple times, I have received no response at all. This lack of transparency and accountability is unacceptable, especially for a service that handles sensitive personal communications. Email accounts are often linked to banking, shopping, and work accounts — sudden closure without resolution creates serious risks for users. As an EU/UK-based provider, mail.co.uk is required under GDPR to respond to data access and account issues within 30 days, but so far they have failed to meet this obligation. Users deserve clear communication, proper support channels, and compliance with data protection laws. Until mail.co.uk improves its customer service and regulatory compliance, I cannot recommend this provider.
Excellent service with a user friendly interface, I signed up for the premium service at just £12 a year, I looked at reviews for this site beforehand and found some to be conflicting but soon realised that some of them were getting confused with other sites or services and also there was a DDOS attack on the servers earlier in the year, this was no fault of theirs, but it did affect some user's before it was resolved which led them to leave negative reviews. So just to put the record straight, I am extremely happy with Mail.co.uk whom I believe are part of Mail.de, and would highly recommend the service.
