Friendly staff, a lot of opportunities
Hatchways provides a lot of opportunities to interview with a lot of companies. Compared to searching and applying on your own, the amount and quality of companies that are looking to interview you is very high. The staff are extremely friendly and provide great feedback as you continue to interview. They also provide you with preparations for each interview tailored for the company you are applying for and looking to meet your needs in terms of relocation, salary expectations, career growth, etc.

I applied to a company and the follow up email for that company was directly from hatchways, asking me to complete an assessment that would take at least a few hours, prior to directly communicating with a live person. The purpose of this appears to be a chance to get the candidate committed and then upsell them on services for job interview preparation.

The company I applied to from a quick search I think may not be real.

Update:

While companies asking for massive time investment early in the process of recruiting is not a great trend, the platform itself appears legit. Maybe the things I read were in the past- while the assessment challenge is very time consuming the platform appears to provide real human feedback for a quick code review, and it's not the responsibility of the platform on exactly how some companies use it.

I've seen people in the past say they were upsold after the assessment, but they don't see to do it anymore.

To start, I was already an experienced engineer coming to Hatchways. So take that bit as you will.

Aside from that, I had an awesome time with Hatchways. Their process was a little long, but the exposure to the different technologies for the assessment and project interview was interesting to me.

After finishing that, they shared my profile with a lot of startup companies. A majority of the startup companies I talked to were fantastic and gave very competitive compensation. During this time, the Hatchways team made sure to keep tabs on me and gave me resources to succeed on the interviews.

I just accepted an offer letter and owe it to Hatchway's platform for making it happen.

Complete scam
Asks you to do an assessment, then after you pass that they ask you to complete their projects for them for free.
If you do not do well enough on the assessment they try to sell you their training which costs thousands of dollars.
Just look at who this company is hiring for, then apply directly to that company and skip this terrible middleman.
In response to the reply I got. I am well aware of what you think you are doing, but in reality you are just polluting the job market as any job opportunity you post requires a potential employee to waste hours of their time. Potentially for nothing.
Also, I ran into a friend who did the assessment. The code base that Hatchways have you work on is an absolute nightmare. Looks like it was written by children, to quote my friend.
So not only is the experience they provide nowhere near real world experience, they also waste everyone's time while doing it.

I enjoyed the first couple weeks of co-op and learned a lot from the mid-term feedback. The latter weeks were much less useful, and the final feedback was mostly useless.

As for the recruitment process, I got a job offer which is what counts in the end, although it did take half a year.

Coding project was laid out in easy to understand steps and the review was in depth.

Hatchways has been very helpful in helping find a great job.
After months of research and hundreds of application, all it took was the matchmaking magic of Hatchways. Very helpful company with a great team.

I did the project interview route (not the paid accelerator program). I didn't end up choosing a position from a Hatchways partner company, but I felt the Hatchways process helped prepare me for interviews both inside and outside their program. I'd definitely recommend Hatchways to entry-level devs.

Pros:
1. You get valuable feedback during your project interview (real SWE give you code reviews, and help you add professional polish to your code).

2. The staff is kind and genuinely want you to land the best position possible - not just the first place that offers you a role (shout-out to Brandon, Sheril, and Shums).

3. The start-ups sourced by Hatchways are all legit, and range in size from super tiny seed-stage ones to larger, (some very selective/competitive) Series-B and later startups.

4. You'll get loads of experience interviewing without having to send out a ton of applications.

5. Access to free, useful interview prep materials

Cons:
1. Though Hatchways ideally should work as a replacement to the technical interview, the larger/more selective companies don't use the Hatchways assessment as such. You still might be asked to do take home projects and live leet-coding. For that reason, the timeline to get hired may vary.

2. All the companies are startups, so you should want to work at a startup :)

My overall process with Hatchways was great! For the initial coding test, I really appreciated the in depth and quick feedback; it was the best feedback I've ever gotten on a test. When it came to finding a job, my recruiter was incredibly proactive with contacting me for updates and emailing companies, and I really felt like they sped up my hiring process.

I had an amazing experience with Hatchways during and after my project-based course.
Hatchways is an excellent way for new software engineers to break into the industry.

As someone without a formal developer background, it was really hard to find a dev job and I never heard back from any companies that I applied to. Luckily, one of the jobs I applied to was using Hatchways as a screening and I was invited to do their initial assessment. At first, I was skeptical. However, I read more about Hatchways’ process and felt pretty good about it. After completing their initial assessment, I got feedback immediately the next morning. I was so shocked at how detailed the feedback was, and how they suggested that I look into high-level React concepts that I had never heard of before. At that point, I knew that they were pretty cool.

Afterward, I got invited to the project interview. The project interview involved an existing code base with a framework that I had never seen before. I had always set up my own projects so I was pretty nervous. They advised me to make sure that I was ready to do the project interview assessment within the 2 week time period, however, I was a little too eager and started it right away, forgetting I had some days where I could not work on the project. I recommend that you definitely make sure you are free during the time you have to do the project interview as speed is a factor in how they grade you. For each task I completed during the project interview, I got some great feedback from their team. Beyond learning from doing the tasks, I was also learning A LOT from their comments and suggestions. These were things I definitely would not have learned on my own.

At the end of the project interview, I got the feedback a few days after. From there I met with a member of the team for a quick call where I got to ask them questions. I was so impressed because even though the company I originally applied to was no longer searching, they informed me not to worry and that they would be sending out my profile to other companies immediately.

Over the next 2 weeks, Hatchways began to send me notifications of companies that were interested. Some companies wanted to interview, other companies asked me to complete additional timed screening assignments. At that point, I was so surprised and excited at all the notifications as I had never heard back from companies before let alone been invited to an interview.

While I took it from there in terms of scheduling and completing any assigned tasks, Hatchways was still providing an enormous amount of support. Anytime I had questions on how to handle a certain situation, they answered every single time. Since I had never had a developer interview, I did not know what to expect. Luckily, Hatchways also has interview prep content that helped show me what to expect in the upcoming interviews and in searching for a job on my own time. Not all the interviews worked out, but they provided me with such excellent experiences that I could learn from.

Ultimately, after going through the processes and with so much support, I received two job offers (1 from a company Hatchways sourced and 1 from another company). However, even if I hadn’t received any job offers, I would still recommend Hatchways to anyone who is ready to take the step to become a professional developer. The sheer amount that I learned and grew and the amount of support that I received were really amazing.

TIPS:
- Be ready to take ownership of all your projects through this process, Hatchways provides fantastic support and resources but ultimately it is up to you to make sure you are on top of it
- Don’t underestimate the video at the end of the project interview, make sure you put effort into your explanations as it will be shared with potential employers
- Always be communicative and send updates to the Hatchway team on how your interviews are going, the more they know, the more they can support you

I have greatly enjoyed initial assessments provided by Hatchways. Their feedback has been very helpful, and there staff has been very friendly and informative :)

If you are able to get interviews on your own that's great and you probably don't need Hatchways or companies like it but if you are running into a brick wall and just want to be judged on your work Hatchways is the way to go :)

If you are the type that finds it a bit hard with all these generic/conventional interview processes. Hatchways have gotten things more simplified.

From the first assessment test, the project week, and getting me into a

As a self-taught dev, I struggled to find a job. I applied to lots, ones I felt qualified for and for which I felt my profile felt more than good enough for, only for most places to not respond or send back a form letter. The greatest turning point of my job search in programming was when I discovered Hatchways.

A company I applied to wanted me to run through an assessment on Hatchways. Since it was free, and I felt like it was finally a way to prove myself, I dove in.

The first assessment had me choose whether to design a frontend, backend or a mixed application. I opted for the frontend, which allowed me to use any JavaScript Framework (or none) to build a simple frontend that retrieved data from an API within about a day. I thought I was great at writing frontend code, and I did score well. However, what I made wasn’t perfect, and the people who reviewed my application offered me some great feedback that I took to heart. In fact, I learned about IntersectionObserver, which I probably wouldn’t have learned about if I hadn’t paid attention to what they said.

The second assessment is a little bit more involved. Like the first assessment, you decide among frontend, backend or fullstack. I did fullstack. I got to choose whether the backend was in Python (Django) or Node, and the frontend is in React. This is where the more intense part starts. They request full access to your GitHub account and have you join a dedicated channel on their Slack. The GitHub part can feel fairly intimidating, to allow this company that, as of right now, you don’t know that well and have to trust, access to your GitHub Account. However, what they do is fairly cool. They create a repo according to the project you’ll work on, creating the tickets and organizing the collaborators. The point is to simulate you being in a work environment as a junior with seniors who you can ask questions. They are very helpful and give you lots of insight, which is great. All three tickets you resolve are unique and require thought, even if they may seem simple, there’s a bunch of small things to notice too. Given that I was always a solo dev until this point, it was great to have the experience of learning how to interact with others on a repo.

The best part comes after you’ve completed the assessments. Even though the original company that wanted me to do the assessments never responded, Hatchways helped me continue looking for jobs. They sent out my resumé plus my results on their assessments to various companies. About half of the companies didn’t want to interview me, but that is already much better than I was doing on my own. And when a company did want to talk to me, Hatchways would send out prep guides tailored to each company. Not only that, but they had a great any resources on their website about how to prepare in general, including prep for systems interviews, behavioral, data structures and algorithms prep, etc. And even better than that, the interviews I got were high quality. In the first round of interviews, I was often talking to a team head, the CTO or even once the CEO of the company. They were personal, and if I wasn’t the right fit for the company, they’d talk to me and explain why.

Given that I hadn’t done interviews in a few years, I had a few questions and went bumbling into a few interviews. However, every time I needed help or wanted to ask a question, Hatchways was helpful. If there ever was a problem or a misunderstanding, they helped figure things out. Without a shadow of a doubt, I can say that I would not have gotten a job without them, and I highly suggest their services for everyone who’s trying to enter the job market as either a bootcamp grad who hasn’t found a job yet or a self-taught dev like me.

Hatchways got me interviews with several companies who would have never even looked at my resume if I had applied online. I ended up getting 3 different job offers from some awesome startups by the end of the process! Interestingly enough, I had actually applied online to one of these companies before I discovered Hatchways, and my application was screened out. A couple of months later, I've accepted a job offer from this very same company!

Before I got all these interviews, I went through Hatchways' Project Interview, where I was given a GitHub repo for a partially working application, and had some tickets I had to resolve. There were bugfix and feature request tickets. Throughout the process, you're graded not only on your technical skills, but also your soft skills, like your written and verbal communication, comfortability with ambiguity, etc. You're given access to a Slack channel where you can communicate your ideas with your team and for asking questions. Honestly, it was overall a very enjoyable experience, and it felt very similar to an actual work environment.

After I completed the Project Interview, I immediately began receiving interview requests from companies who were interested in my profile. I ended up getting around 10 interviews lined up in about a week. Prior to this, I was lucky if I was getting 2 interviews per month.

The whole team at Hatchways is extremely friendly and accommodating. Throughout the interview process, the team stayed connected with me via another Slack channel, and was always there to help me if I had any questions or needed advice. They also provided prep guides for each company who I had interviews with, which was awesome.

As someone who graduated from a pretty low profile university, and who does not have the most exciting internship experience, Hatchways gave me a way to prove to employers that I really know my stuff. If you're a recent grad and you have strong experience working with modern tech stacks (React, Node, Python) then I think you'd really excel through the Hatchways process. I highly recommend Hatchways to anyone who is looking to level up their career in tech!
