⭐ 1 star — Poor transparency, excessive charges and an intimidating experience
I had a very disappointing experience with First Response Electrical, and I would not use them again.
I contacted the company during an electrical emergency at my home. An exposed wire had got wet, and some of my sockets and lights had stopped working. I was advised of a £49 call-out fee, but the actual labour rates and additional charges were not clearly explained to me during the initial phone call.
I subsequently contacted my housing association’s out-of-hours service and attempted to cancel the booking. I tried to cancel more than once, but the company refused to cancel without charging me the call-out fee. This was despite the electrician reportedly being over an hour away at the time I wanted to cancel. I was trying to resolve the situation through my landlord, and I felt the cancellation terms should have been clearly explained before I booked.
When the electrician arrived, he had to contact the office to establish what he should charge me. I had simply explained the issue, and the fault had not even been investigated before a price was discussed. I found it concerning that such significant charges could be presented before the problem had been properly assessed.
I was also shocked to discover that labour was charged per hour or part thereof. Under this arrangement, working just one minute into another hour can result in a full additional hourly charge. The call-out fee also had VAT added, alongside other potential charges, which I did not feel had been adequately explained during the booking process.
The timing of the agreement was another concern. The terms and conditions were sent alongside the quotation, meaning I was only seeing the detailed charging structure at the point I was being asked to make a decision. I do not believe customers dealing with an emergency should have to discover significant charges at the door.
Most importantly, I felt intimidated by the payment situation. I am a mother of two children under two, and having a man at my home while I was being pressured to resolve payment was an uncomfortable experience. I should have been able to understand the charges and make an informed decision without feeling intimidated.
Their terms state that customers can stop work at any time, but that they will be charged for the time accrued. They also state that the rates are specified in the confirmation email. This raises questions for me about whether the full pricing and cancellation arrangements were communicated clearly enough before the visit.
I have requested a refund and a proper explanation of the charges. I hope the company reviews its booking process, cancellation policy, pricing transparency and the way staff communicate with customers.
My experience was stressful, expensive and disappointing. I would strongly advise other customers to request the complete pricing structure, including VAT and administration fees, and to obtain the cancellation policy in writing before agreeing to a booking.
