£765 to change oil and filter - Dishonest and rip-off

I got a quote from Ford Motor dealer to change the transmission oil and filter for £425. Driving to Edgware, then coming back by public transport, and doing the same again for pickup would have been a hassle. I also know official dealers usually charge more, so I decided to get a quote from a local garage.

I bought genuine transmission oil and a filter from the Official _Ford _store on ebay for £171 on offer (£190 without the offer, but their latest offer is now £161). To buy the original and genuine parts I typed the part numbers and word "Genuine" on google, and the first option was a whole kit ( Oil and filter) from Official _Ford _store on ebay for £171. Very quick and simple, and since it was coming from official Ford it was trustworthy. ( Almost most of car makers have official store on ebay, and experienced and decent mechanics are aware of that)

I contacted Barnet Motor Medics for a quote, but they refused to give one and would not use the parts I had already bought.

I then asked them for a quote including their own oil and filter. They quoted £765 in total — £390 for the oil and filter, and £375 for 2.5 hours of labour at £150 per hour.

Instead, I took my car to a well-known, genuinely highly rated garage opposite Everyman Cinema. They completed the job for £110 labour, so the total cost was £281 instead of £765.

I was told the job took about an hour. From what I’ve seen (including half a dozens of DIY YouTube videos showing 30–35 minutes), it doesn’t even take that long. The job is similar to changing engine oil. It doesn’t require special expertise or equipment. The only small differences are that two plugs need to be removed to drain the oil instead of one, and the air filter box needs to be removed to refill it, which the removing takes less than 5 minutes.
Now, It's clear why Barnet Motor Medics refused to use my own genuine supplied oil and filter. Obviously, to charge £390 for parts that you can buy between £161 - £190 from FORD OFFICIAL STORE.
2.5 hours labour for changing the oil and filter costing £375. Seriously? £150 per an hour. Seriously?
Dishonest and rip- off.

As explained, we do not fit customer-supplied parts. This is standard practice among reputable garages, as we cannot verify the origin, storage conditions, or suitability of externally sourced components, nor can we provide any warranty on them. While parts may be available online at reduced prices through platforms such as eBay or Amazon, these are not directly comparable to official UK supply. Had you contacted a local Ford retailer, you would have found that our quoted price reflects the current UK recommended retail price. We source all parts through authorised Ford trade suppliers rather than third-party online sellers, ensuring correct specification, quality, and traceability. This approach protects both our customers and our business.

Your comparison of parts pricing is therefore misleading. Online prices do not account for supplier guarantees, proper handling and storage, or the liability we assume when supplying and fitting parts. Our pricing reflects these factors, not simply the base purchase cost.

In relation to labour, our estimate of 2.5 hours is based on recognised industry-standard repair times, not best-case scenarios presented in online videos. Such content rarely reflects real workshop conditions, potential complications, or the responsibility of carrying out work to a professional and insured standard. Additionally, we operate a fair pricing policy: where a job is completed in less time than estimated, labour charges are adjusted accordingly. This would have been evident had you proceeded with the work.

You chose to use an alternative provider at a lower cost, which is entirely your decision. However, a lower price does not represent a like-for-like comparison in terms of service, warranty, or accountability.

We stand by our pricing, our policies, and the quality of service we provide.
We also note the level of detail in your review; however, it appears your dissatisfaction stems primarily from our policy of not fitting customer-supplied parts, which was clearly communicated from the outset. Our approach is consistent and applied to all customers to ensure quality, safety, and full warranty coverage.

We take pride in the trust our customers place in us and the consistently high standards we maintain.

Good & Helpful Garage at a Fair Price

I contacted the garage (which my family have been using for many years) and explained that my BMW had lost all its coolant. Car booked in for the following day so as to inspect and repair as required.
They discussed what may of happened and offered me the opportunity to view and discuss car when on the ramp They explained various problems and said subject to BMW parts delivery the car would be ready for collecting on the 28th . They subsequently telephoned me to confirm parts available & cost of the works. Kept me informed of progress and that the car would be ready tomorrow at midday 28/3/26 . Everybody very Friendly & Helpful, Reasonable price for the works.

A Damsel in Distress

Barnet Motor Medics came to this damsel in distress a few days ago. If it hadn’t been for their quick action when I phoned I would have been responsible for a huge hold up in rush hour traffic on East Barnet Road at the corner of Henry Road, My panicked phone call to them resulted in an immediate response when they came to my car which had two very flat tyres having hit an unobserved pedestrian island. The car was limped to their garage and my granddaughter and I were given a lift. After an examination of the damaged wheel it was a relief to be told that I hadn’t cracked the rim and that they could order 2 matching tyres for the next day. I got a call in the morning to collect the car and was told that I didn’t need wheel alignment as all was okay. The calmness and assuring manner of Kiran and his colleague kept me from over-reacting and stressing. A damsel in distress needs this kind of professional attention and the very welcome cuppa won my heart! Barnet Motor Medics is truly a diamond in our locale and I would urge anyone who wants expert car care not to hesitate and call them on 020 8441 1822.

This is a great garage

This is a great garage. They fixed my Honda Jazz which had a broken wing mirror and parking sensor very quickly when my regular Honda garage could not fit me in for a month. They were friendly and efficient, from the receptionists to the technician who dealt with the car. The parking sensor was not easy to fix but it was done very skilfully and with good humour. I will definitely go back.

Great garage with honest charging

Welcoming reception who explained alternative repair options.
Quoted for one hour’s labour, but with great decency, only charged for half an hour as the job took less time than expected. Will definitely use again and recommend to friends.

Poor service. Poor management

I booked in to get my car rear light fixed, I paid in advance for the part, waited until the Friday to get it repaired.

I told them I needed to pick the car up that night to drive home, when I arrived at 4:45 the car was still in pieces and not ready to drive and I was told they had not solved the problem. The new light did not work.

No real effort was made to solve the problem, no diagnostics, no fuse checking. They tried the new light, it didn’t work, that was the end of their efforts. I paid £180 for this service.

The manager then told me they had gone above and beyond as they were only told to “change the light” so I assume fixing the problem than made the light not work is another service I should have pad for.

That said the two or three mechanics I spoke to were very friendly and helpful, I do not blame them.

I feel I was last in the queue today, no real effort was made to fix the problem and I paid £180 for very little.

If they had checked the light when I came in at 8:30 in the morning, made the decision that it didn’t work and more money was required to do further investigation to solve the problem I would paid it. But I wasn’t given that option.

Too little too late. Quite unhelpful manager and offie staff. Nice mechanics.

They did however fill my tyres full of air for free / £180.

Disappointing at best. They were too busy and shouldn’t have taken the booking.

You contacted us by email to book your vehicle in specifically for the replacement of the right rear light. We ordered the part as requested, and you later brought the car to us for fitting. Upon installing the new light, we found that it was still not functioning. Although our instruction was only to replace the light unit, we carried out additional checks in an effort to provide the best possible service.

We intentionally left the light unit removed so that we could show you the work carried out and demonstrate that the issue remained. When you arrived, we explained that the light was still not working and that we had checked the wiring, confirming that there was no power present. We also advised that the issue was unlikely to be a simple fuse problem, as this had already been checked and no fault could be identified.

It is therefore unfair to suggest that no further work was carried out. We also explained that further diagnostic work would be required to resolve the issue; however, due to our workload, this could not be scheduled until the following week. As electrical faults can be complex, we were unable to give an exact repair timeframe and advised that the issue could potentially relate to a failed control module.

You mentioned that although you work in Barnet, you live some distance away. For this reason, our manager suggested that it may be more convenient to book the vehicle into a garage closer to your home, as the car could potentially be off the road for an extended period.

While we understand your frustration, the light replacement was carried out strictly under your instruction. The £180 charge reflects the labour involved in removing and refitting the light unit, along with the additional time spent checking the wiring. You were present and able to see the amount of work required. The only delay occurred because we wanted to fully explain the issue to you rather than simply refit the light and return the vehicle without clarification.

Ultimately, it appears that your dissatisfaction stems from the fact that replacing the light did not resolve the fault, despite the work being carried out as requested.

We do hope that you were able to have the issue resolved.
